Well, welcome to my first real foray into the world of terrain building.

For years, I've generally managed to avoid the need to have my own board for playing 40K on. Either we played at school, at a friends, or I wasn't interested in the hobby at the time...

That changed about 3 or so weeks ago, when I wandered up to Gav's for a game against his Raven Guard. Aside from a piece of household furniture as the main focal point for the battle, we pretty much had bugger all in the way of anything that wasn't either paper-related, or cloth-based...

At that point, I realized that the difference between a fully painted army on a fully painted/detailed board, and a fully painted army on an unpainted/ad-hoc board can mean all the difference in simply enjoying the game...

So, after years of thinking and planning what to do with my potential board, I've finally got one to begin on.

Dimensions are 4 foot by 6.8 foot. So I've got a wee bit extra to play with, but chances are for normal games I'll just block them off with the pylons from the Battle for Macragge set or something...

So, here it is so far.

This is after the first coat of sand has been thrown liberally on it. No doubt it'll need another few such assaults before it's done to my satisfaction.

Aside from that, I managed to get my hands on a set of the Moonscape craters, so I'm painting up a test one in desert colours, so hopefully it turns out looking ok.

But, every board kind of needs a story to it, so what's this one's?

At the moment, I kind of envisage it like that scene from Aliens, when the Marines have just disembarked from their APC and are attempting to enter the complex. Abandoned buildings and machinery, that kind of stuff, except obviously placed in a desert enviroment, and during the day with no rain.

So, more or less, crashed or burnt out vehicles, craters, dead trees and abandoned buildings, and no contact has been heard for a couple of weeks...

I'd also like to point out that any help, be it ideas, or tips would be greatly appreciated. So if you've got something, chime in!

Its looking good mate.

I would be tempted to have it look just like a hastily abandoned outpost, with with most buildings underground, so you can use the Taros entrances. So maybe somekind of generator building (low slung, with a fuel tank next to it) to provide some hard cover, then have the rest as movable terrain. Burnt out tanks, other debris. Crates etc. And your crators to suggests that a big airstrike of somekind forced the occupants out? Maybe have small arms damage on the buildings to show there was a skirmish of some kind?

Oh believe me, I've had the Taros buildings in mind ever since our game. At the moment, I'm aiming for 2-3 of them, a generator or two, just to signify that it's a small outpost. I might try my hand at some awnings over the entrances, some stocked supplies around the back of them, etc etc.

Have you seen Pitch Black? Sounds like perfect inspiration for this...

Especially with the gargoyle-like aliens in it!

My suggestion would be to have a look around some £1 shops, find some farm/construction vehicles and do some converting - I've wanted to do this for years since I saw the board GW made when the Necrons were first ever released - it was an Imperial dig at an unidentified pyramid...which turned out to be a Necron Tomb. Mark Jones, the GW scenery maker guy, had done just that - got some JCBs and converted them so they looked a bit more Imperial. That whole article might be of some inspiration actually...

Ah, bloody hell, Pitch Black, of course! Can't believe the parallels between what I'm aiming for, and that movie. Have to admit, that I'm an 'Aliens' fan, but I've overlooked the more obvious inspiration, and just twisted what I like into what I want.

Cheers for the idea about the JCB's and such though Chris! Something else I'd never have thought off... ;)

looking good, I'm sure we would all appreciate copious photoes of progress on a regular basis ( hint about as subtle as a jobby in the middle of a pool table), a bit of encouragement and inspiration is always good.

Ah, don't worry Old Guard, I plan for this to be regularly updated for quite some time. I've got a fair few ideas to indulge in once I've got the GW terrain out of the way.

So, here's the test crater that I've just finished. Rather chuffed with the way it turned out, so I'll be churning out the other 4 like this over the coming days.

If anyone wants a run-down of how I painted it, feel free to ask, and I'll be sure to make a step-by-step tutorial for one of the remaining ones!

In other related news, I picked up two packs of the Citadel Woods, and a Citadel Gaming Hill today, so I'm fairly set for the coming weeks.

For those of you wondering why I'm bothering with the plastic options, rather than scratch-building, well, it's simply because I need to get off the ground as soon as possible, and actually have something workable, and finished quickly. Yes, there's loads of other people out there with terrain exactly the same as mine, but hey... tentative first steps and all...

Just a quick question though, regarding the crater. Does anyone think it would look a little better with some clumps of static grass on the edges?

Some static grass might liven it up a bit...

Looks great though, I really need to pick a set of these up!

if you add patched of grass to your board then yes ( and it would look more asthetically pleasing ). Possibly pools of water in your craters would give the grass a reason to be there as well??

Also if you got the dead grass stuff rather than the green stuff, that would look ok, as dry brownish grass would fit better, and look more like scrub, which is good.

Crater is looking good btw.

They're well worth getting Chris! They're not a bad price either, for what you get. Probably the most cost-effective way of adding terrain that GW do...

I'm thinking about adding some pools of water to the craters. But for how the grass is growing, I'm reasoning that the shade offered by the crevices of the crater would provide enough shelter from harsh winds, sun and heat to allow some vegetation to form.

Yeah, the scorched grass that I'd bought for my Vostroyans is what I used. Fit's the theme far better than the other flocks...

Right, brief update. Made a start on assembling some of the trees, so I might do some of them next, get some variety in. But that's later. As of now, I've finished the second crater, and decided that adding flock to the bases would be a good idea.

So, here's how both of them are currently looking!

First crater, now with flock...

Second crater, just finished...

Really good, the grass makes them look alot more like they have been there for a while, which I think is a good effect!

I guess the base the trees are on will be done in the same sort of colours yeah? I would also be tempted to make your board that kinda colour as well, though your probs doing that already.

Looks like it's Gav who's going to have to go to you from now on :P

The new Rulebook shows a lot of ruins half submerged by dunes, maybe you should try something like that???

Yeah, the bases for the trees will be done in a similar fashion. The only thing that I can see giving me a headache deciding what to do with it, is the rocky outcrops, as they'll have to be similar to the hills, with their bare rock. Not too sure what I want to do with that yet.

I'll take a wee look through the rulebook when I get a chance, see what you're on about mate! And yes, no doubt it'll be Gav coming to mine all the time now... ;)

You can expect it all you want, but I didn't... well, actually, this crater was painted last night, but I only got round to varnishing it and flocking it this morning... enjoy!

Great start to the terrain mate, the craters look fine! What's next?

What's next? Well, apart from the plastic terrain that I've got, there's a trio of cardboard tubes that I got my Horus Heresy posters in sitting around, so I'm thinking either they'll be seperate venting towers for an underground refinery, or rather massive sensor towers. There's also a niggling idea at the back of my mind that putting a small ballcock in the middle of the three, and having some tubes securing it would allow it to look like some sort of either measurement device (for scientific experiments), or 'testing' device...

But that's just a rough idea at the moment...

Craters are looking good, Grizz. You've got my interest with the Taros terrain as I think they'll look great, but never seen anyone use any yet.
