Vauguely topical - is the lastest DOW game out yet? I ask as it has the DE as a playable race which should at least make them a bit more known. Ditto the book 'Brothers of the Snake' where the DE are a/the major protagonists |

You have indeed mate, go flagellate yourself repeatedly ![]() When you say had more updates, are you including the variant lists in this? If so then yes, they have, partly due to popularity, partly due to history. If not then no the standard codex marines have had the same number as orks, nids, eldar (I think) and chaos if memory serves correctly. As for the "re-set" as people have commented on, that happened at start of the 2nd ed. with all races being included in the get you by list (including squats), then each race supposedly getting a list. So, all the variant lists started to appear in second ed, SW, Angels of death, and because gamers are a fickle bunch, to include or exclude a dex once it's produced creates havoc. Look at the fuss when feral orks, lost and the damned and craftworld eldar books were pulled. As to why these were pulled and the marine varient ones weren't, blame the shareholders and bean counters. I for one would not have a problem with all marine dexes being put together in one book, which admittedly would rival the BBB for number of pages, and then spread out the releases. However, marines are a good constant seller, partly due to ease of painting, and partly due to ease of adding bits, look at how easy it is to create a tac, assault and dev marine all from the same template. No other race (except maybe csm and orks) have that. That is why it's so easy to create variants and have more releases. They are GW's cash cow, and to be honest I think the only people we can blame are gamers themselves. If there wasn't the demand there wouldn't be the support from the company. Now whether that stems from the 2nd ed. or whether it's an ongoing problem I'm not sure, as GW are able to support races equally as WFB shows. I may only be starting to dip my toes in at the moment, but from what I see there doesn't appear to be the same issue. I don't think vets help either, the number of times I've seen people slagging off GW for lack of supposrt for their army or moan about SM and to me that's just a turn off and I imagine it would be for younger gamers too. I think what we have here is good as we have a fairly even spread and it has influenced some of our younger members to look into starting other armies. More of that would help on other forums and such like. I think at the end of the day this whole issue is admittedly partly the companies fault for the marketing strategy, but equally we as a gaming community are at fault for the way we deal with the issues. The constant whining about squats is one example, they're gone, it's sad/annoying, but as Jervis said, no-one knew how or where to take them and so they were given up to the hive mind. Asking about them every games day or question session is not constructive. Doing what Druichi.net did for dark elves in developing updates and changes and saying to the developers, why don't you try these updates, or inviting them to try them out in some games at things like the bash is a lot more helpful and one would imagine more likely to get a welcome response. Realise that's a long and bit random but hey ho! |
