We have a great compo going on at the moment building industrial tank farms, but here's one I'm doing at the moment.![]() The dished ends are available in resin from Ainsty Castings (Black Crow?) and are particularly useful at turning any deodrant / aurosol can / mothwash bottle or sweet tube into something realistic. (comes in a couple of sizes) Sat up last night sticking corrugated panels to a cheesy bites can whilst watchinh the instantly forgettable Starship Troopers 2 - Hero of the Federation!! yet to add some form of safety fencing on top, access ladders and such. I freely admit that for ultimate realism, there would be a hell of a lot of pipework all over it, but I'm also realistic in that as a gaming piece, I just need to represent it! A couple of strawers will service the two smaller vessels. |

very cool, indeed, but what is that wall doing there? its out of place imho and it should rather be a fence or something |

There is a diesel tank in my work that has something similar to it, The wall is used as a spill tray for the fuel. Very cool terrain piece, I like it a lot. Would really like to see it painted with a couple of minis fighting over it, very cool. |

It's called a "bund". Tanks farms / storage tanks often have such a feature. If there is a spill or catastrophic leak, the wall will contain the fluid until it can be disposed of appropriately, instead of just running into the storm drains. Added to which, it makes for a good defensive position! I've pictured it here against another I made. You can see clearly how the spill has been contained. ![]() Both of these will complement this small processing plant. I need to add a few more pipes and I'm thinking of adding some hand railing at some future point. But it does make for interesting gaming areas. ![]() ![]() The large tank in the finished bunded area is a toilet systen ball. Check out B&Q for a few great shapes! Again, use of the Ainsty dished ends as well as oil storage tanks (in the bunded area) and small generator (red thing) are by them. http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiproducts.htm |

A few bits of gubbins and a quick spray of undercoat, and you get the picture.

Cheers Firestorm. WIP painting shot. Don't normally do this but very pleased with my rust effect on the cladding sheets around the large tank.

Little tip if you are using water effect. It does NOT do what it says on the bottle!!!! 24 hours later and it's still not set! As soon as it is, a couple of hours will see this finished. ![]() Whilst waiting for it to set, I made a start on this. Can you tell what it is yet? (daft Oz voice)

It will be defensible (sand bag emplacement to left of gate). Fenced off area incorporating storage tanks (by Ainsty - when they arrive) and a storage compound. I have a lot of storage cylinders / boxes etc which often look silly plonked on the battlefield on their todd! This should give them purpose. Wiz - yup - GW water effect. Awoke this morning and it's still runny! I used to use clear varnish (did a load of paddy fields with it) and it worked a charm. This stuff is a bit of a con! |

How much water effect did you put on? It needs to be built up gradually in thin layers. The advantage of GW water effect is that kids can use it safely and it's easier to clean than varnish. Veteran hobbyists can make use of alternatives while younger folk just starting out can't. Some parents don't want there kids using varnish. So rather than saying it's a con, just say it doesn't suit your needs. The tank farm looks great though. Very impressive. |

Stagger - you on commission?
It says to do in in 2-3mm layers. I put in approx 3mm so suspected it might take a little longer. The bottle does say that at this depth it will dry in 24 hours. I've used it before (see the tank farm above) and this was an even thinner layer. It still took a couple of days. One tip for using this (or varnish) for anyone, is to make sure your drying surface is perfectly flat. Seems obvious I know, but even moving the model mid way through drying can upset the layer. |

Not exactly. I apologise if my post came across as rude. I just have to deal with people being negative about GW a lot and it can get a bit tedious. |

No problem mate, generally I am a big supporter of GW! Christ, I spend enough on them! I've been collecting / supporting since the first edition. I didn't think you were being rude, just very defensive (thought you'd invented the stuff! lol) I was very negative about rough coat, but now I've mastered being able to use a tin more than once, I love the stuff! Was really putting the reference to Water Effect up as a modelling tip. Just expect it to take a little longer than suggested. I don't know, but maybe putting it up in a warm room (airing cupboard?) may speed it up. |
