As Reinhart watched Lao turn to leave he mumbled a confirmation, once the Prince General was long out of sight he sighed an leant against the wall, that was more unnerving than he had thought. He knew now that he must not fail. He would hunt those girls down himself if he had to.

===

She held her friend’s hand, stroking it softly with her thumb. So, someone had been looking for Noire… Shaede was happy for her friend but… at the same time she felt a pang of sadness in her chest, was no one looking for her? She pushed the feeling down as quickly as it had come, as she had no time to dwell on feelings, and she dared not appear weak in front of this male… no doubt he would use it against her later.

This could not be easy for her, as it had been over 15 years since either of them had seen their families. She nodded to her, to silently show her support. She did not exactly want to have a heart to heart with a random stranger sitting beside her.
The young man turned to her, and she felt suddenly uncomfortable. His kind words were strange to her ears, she felt… strange, but dared not let it get to her. He was just trying to get under her defences, that was all. He was a male, and males only wished to manipulate others and exert their dominance, whether that was through violence or sweet words… Shaede found the latter to be far more cruel. She said nothing, unsure on how to respond, and turned to her friend once more.

“I feel like pancakes…” she said softly, “What about you?” she looked over the menu a few times, fiddling with a clean butter knife, twirling it with precision in her hands. It was an old habit she had.

Once they ordered, Noire with bacon and vanilla ice cream on top of waffles, they dug in. Aidan watched them without a word, without any expression. He had noticed the friendly gesture between the two of them and wondered.

"Are you two lesbians?"

Noire instantly had a brain freeze. "What? What did you say?"

"You two seem awfully close. I was merely curious. The men on the ship are...to say the least...animals when it comes to the opposite sex. You'll need someone like me or the Captain to escort you around the ship, oh and there's the new guy too. He's a hard ass."

Noire's eye twitched. "We can defend ourselves, thanks. And no, we're not. That's all you need to know, not that it's any of your business."

"Alright, alright, my bad. I was only asking." He took off his hat, fanning himself with it. Up close, one could see he had thick hair. It was rather...silky looking. Aidan noticed Shae looking and he blinked in confusion. "What?" He looked baffled. "Do I look sweaty? Well, it is hot." Something inside couldn't resist as he smiled charmingly. "And so are you."

She was inwardly very excited to receive the stack of pancakes, she’d never had them before, cream, syrup and blueberries. Her eyes were wide like silver dollars when they were placed in front of her, and the first bite was like heaven. Sweet tangy yet creamy and fluffy all at once, compared to what she usually ate, this was just insane!

She had a little moment to herself, suppressing a little whimper at the taste and sensation of it all, but that was ruined when the McKay fellow opened his trap.

She nearly choked on her food when he asked, and… it was such a personal question! She stared at him for a few moments until she trusted herself to swallow. He had not noticed her glare by the time he had removed his hat, and she found herself surprised at how thick and smooth his hair looked, she briefly had the thought of running her hands through it, but she beat the thought down, it would not do to have such ridiculous thoughts.

Shaede blinked when he turned to meet her gaze, she had been caught staring… but the comment annoyed her further, another of the lines he likely used on many women. He didn’t mean it, she reminded herself. Scoffing at him she pushed at his shoulder in annoyance and turned back to her food.

Several minutes later they had finished and Shaede was certainly full, she did not like that she had to wait for this scraggly man to move before she could leave the booth, but there was little she could do about it. Finally they were outside again and she began looking around the city for any sign of guards or official members of society. She did not like that he knew she was escaped from Ravenholm, she sized up on what she knew of him, his name was McKay, according to the weasel of a merchant, assuming it was not an alias, but she didn’t have a first name. He worked on a sky pirate ship, for Captain Rubi Squire… Noire’s cousin… Was Rubi trustworthy? If this McKay was to be trusted, she was… but then, she did not know enough of him. What did he know of her? The more she though on it, the more she wanted answers from this Captain Squire. She hoped and prayed that this was indeed Noire’s cousin… if not for her own sake, then for her friend’s.

“Lead the way,” she told him quietly.

The heat bore down on all three of them as they stepped out of the restaurant. The hat was firmly placed on Aidan's head before he regarded the ladies. "This way." Weaving through the streets and avoiding the guards, they made their way to the aerial docks where various airships were locked in. "And there she is," he said, tipping his hat to what appeared to be the airship he was referring to.

It was a medium sized ship compared to the other ones that were fairly large. The ship, depending on the lighting, looked like it would shine gold in the sun. A pair of triple jets were installed in the rear. Most of it looked like it was actually made of bronze and wood with a reddish finish on it. Atop was a blimp-like structure, giving the ship a zeppelin type style. In the front was what looked like the bridge with a huge observation window, allowing the pilot to see where they'd be going. On the back end side where they could see it looked like an intricate black stamp-styled painting of a little girl in a typical little girl dress and holding a stuffed rabbit in a waistcoat.

"This ship is called The Alice."

"Alice," Noire repeated softly with some awe. "Alice," she said again.

"Captain salvaged this ship when she was a teenager or some other, and stole money to get it to be the way it is today. She named it Alice because apparently...she really loves this book called Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." He clapped his hands and rubbed them together. "Let's get on board." He walked up to the ship and blinked. "Where's the ladder?" He looked up. "OI!! CABIN BOY! DROP THE LADDER!!"

The warm sun was irritating at the best of times, and Shaede always preferred colder temperatures, but both she and Noire had undergone training to adapt to any weather condition… However it was not pleasant. Especially since they were both wearing black.

It did not take long to reach the ship, and both girls were impressed with what they saw. Shaede heard shouting from the various areas and ships, people yelling orders, and men heaving boxes and crates back and forth.

She had noticed the attention she and Noire were getting, and it did not sit right with her, however she would not dare acknowledge it, nor would she be put off by it, last thing she needed was a bunch of sweaty men eyeballing her and Noire. She folded her arms, watching out of the corner of her eye, to make sure they didn’t get any closer.
After McKay had screamed his head off, the ladder was dropped and the three slowly climbed up. Shaede was hesitant to let the man behind them, and glared at him until he climbed up before them.

She was certainly thankful at least to be off the flimsy rope ladder, and she was interested in the commotion she heard out on deck.

Noire looked around. Inside didn't seem as glamorous as the outside. She disregarded the cabin boy as she and Shae followed Aidan to the bridge. As they walked by each crew member, they turned to look at the women as if they never saw the female species before. The bridge was simple, and the helm looked exactly what you'd find on a pirate ship. It had the compass and on the wall was a plasma screen map, glowing in green with red markers. Apparently the ship had minor technological advancements.

Aidan went up to the helm, looking around cautiously. "Now where could she be? She's normally here."

It was too late for caution or heroism, he realized. The predator had already jumped on its prey. A complete stranger jumped up behind Shaede, wrapping an arm around her waist so swiftly as curled lips leaned close to her ear, breathing softly. A free hand snaked under Shaede's arm and lightly grasped her left breast.

"What delicious guests have you brought me, Mr. McKay?" a feminine voice purred, the accent a mix of British and Italian. Noire herself was too baffled by the assault to even move to an offensive stance.

Aidan gave a disapproving expression towards the woman now holding Shaede hostage by groping. "They...wanted to meet with you, Captain."

Shaede followed the other across the crew members seemed to take great interest, something she found a little amusing. She suppressed a smirk as she watched one man out of the corner of her eye, she thought his eyes might pop out of head!

The helm was as she had expected, but for one thing, she saw no Captain to speak of. Aidan seemed confused and as he turned Shaede heard a soft tap behind her, the next moment there was a warmth to her back and a hand grabbing at her. The specific contact surprised her, and her eyes widened slightly. As she female voice spoke to her ear, her eyes narrowed further. She did not like to be touched.
She let a low growl escape her lips as she grabbed the hand and twisted it, manoeuvring herself out the way bending the arm back to behind the woman’s back, this time Shaede hissed in the Captain’s ear.

“Do not make the mistake of touching me again,” she growled, her eyes flashing, voice low. After the warning she stepped back, releasing her and gave the woman a wide berth as she moved to stand by Noire, not taking her eyes of the sneaky snake of a woman. “I’d have thought you might have some semblance of professionalism… seems my expectations were too high.” She said as she moved, her voice was not that of an impressed guest.

“Is this the Rubi Squire you remember Noire?” she asked her friend, partly hoping she was not, the ‘welcoming gesture’ was rather uncomfortable, Shaede certainly hoped there would not be a repeat of it.

The woman didn't cry out surprisingly. She actually expected the retaliation. The Captain turned to them, smiling almost cockily. Her skin was a deep tan, like Aidan, but her hair stood out more. Atop her head was a short semi-wild messy crop of light orange hair. She stared at them with light blue eyes with flecks of amethyst. The woman rubbed her wrist with mild amusement in her features. She was surprisingly tall, even more so by the fact she wore lace-up two inch high heel pirate styled boots of dark brown leather.

She wore a white sleeveless shirt with thick straps that tie up around the back of the neck and a couple of button that can be undone near the bodice, wine red coloured short shorts, brown suede waist cincher with a long diagonal hem with a slight tailcoat look at the long side and two black leather straps with gold buckles wrapped around the waist. She also wore shiny black rubber long sleeves and thigh high socks. Over top it all was a brown leather duster with wine red silk for interior, although the sleeves are large and folded like a pirate jacket.

"That's a hell of a hello. I like you," she stated bluntly with obvious interest in the woman before her.

Aidan sighed. "Ladies, this is Captain--"

"Rubi Indiana Squire, at your service."

Aidan's eye twitched at the interruption. "Captain...these are guests, not toys."

Rubi pouted. "But they're so cute! And what the hell are you doing issuing demands on my ship!"

"My apologies. I cannot help but feel like babying you whenever you greet a new member like this," he yawned.

Rubi didn't look impressed but let it slide, looking over to the girls. Her eyes then landed on Noire and blinked. Walking closer, she circled around the girl. Noire never answered Shaede's whispered question. Honestly, she barely remembered her cousin's name. But still, the woman was indeed familiar. Rubi was thinking the same of her.

"How old are you?"

"Nineteen."

Rubi's eyes narrowed. "What's your name?"

Noire swallowed hard. "Noire."

Rubi's eyes became hard like stone. "That's impossible. You look like her, but..." The captain stared for a long time at the girl. "She was locked away."

"Was," Noire stressed. Raising a hand, the claws phased into existence. "This should be proof enough."

Aidan gaped. Is this what non-humans are capable of?

The Captain however didn't seem all that surprised. Her indigo orbs softened. Before Noire could react, the woman hugged her tight into her bosom. "Oh Noire! How I missed you, my dear cousin! For years, all I thought about was getting you out of there." She sighed, releasing the half-suffocated girl. "It seems though, I was too much too slow. You managed to get out on your own..."

"No," she said. "Not on my own. I had a friend." Noire looked to Shaede. "I...don't know what to do now?"

Rubi sighed, stroking Noire's face. "Have no fear. I'm by your side now." She walked over to Shaede and bowed like a man would as opposed to curtseying like a woman should. "I sincerely apologize for my uncalled for approach. You are welcome to stay aboard my vessel and be dropped off wherever you wish." She stood up straight, looking over her shoulder at her young cousin. "Do you wish to stay and travel with me?"

Noire was emotionless. "We'll see."

"Well, there's no rush."

"There is, actually."

"Hm?"

"We escaped. They'll be looking for us."

Rubi blinked then grinned toothily. "Alright then. We shall take off. I was planning on heading to Mecha to crash a party. You're welcome to join me." Looking to Aidan, she walked over. "Well?! GET FLYING!"

He jumped to the task almost immediately, flipping switches with a single swipe of his hand. "Aye, Captain!"

Turning back to the girls, she smiled warmly. "I imagine you two are tired. We don't have a lot of hammocks, but I have a large bed you can use till you have your own rooms. Follow me." With that, she walked out from the bridge.

Shaede said little, watching the interaction between McKay and Captain Squire. The Captain – Rubi, as she introduced herself as- did not seem impressed with his banter. Shaede was curious, at Ravenholm if there was any of this insubordination… well she had seen boys who talked back be dragged away by burly guards or knocked out with a shot of tranquilisers. She had even seen a scientist beat a little boy into a bloody mess right before her eyes.

There was blood staining her childhood, and she would never be free of it.
She tried to push the dark thoughts away, and remain focused on the current situation. As Noire had found her family at last. She wondered briefly if that meant she would now be less of a concern, or ignored as Noire may want to spend her time with her cousin. The thought waivered as she witnessed Noire’s rather cool reaction to finding her family at last.

But then she understood, fifteen years waiting, waiting for a family to find her… and they never did. Granted Rubi was trying… But in Shaede’s eyes it was too little too late. She wondered about her own family. No one had contacted her, she’d not heard from anyone… perhaps… perhaps her parents did not care for her either? Maybe she was as much a monster as the facility had always said she was… No. Now was not the time for this. She closed her eyes a moment and opened them when Rubi approached, she did not feel like speaking and so nodded in response. She would accept that apology, and she did not want to intrude on the reunion… though Noire was not even sure she wanted to stay. Shaede wanted to discuss this.

She noticed McKay’s expression when Noire revealed her claw abilities. A look of shock… hmmph, what else was to be expected? He was human, and male. Most like he thought of them as monsters already, their strangeness and their talents. Her frown returned and she looked away, she need no upset herself further.

Noire seemed to look to her for answers and Shaede decided, that although she wanted to see her family, it was seeming like less and less of a viable option… a family that likely didn’t care about her anyway? What did she need of it.

“We will stay awhile. Though unlikely permanent,” the length of their stay would be need to be determined also…

She followed the captain to her quarters, not looking back at McKay, most likely he was disgusted with their presence already. She did look forward to sleeping, and the cool interior of the cabins were a much welcome comfort to her as opposed to the outside sun.

The room had much natural lighting much to their annoyance. The bed was pretty much a king sized bed, though the sheets were a mess and it didn't look as if Rubi made her bed too often. What was the point? Pirates were hardly domestic. Against the walls was a collection of various assortment of valuables. Some were clothes, some was simply gold and jewels. Mounted on the walls was a large collection of highly modified weapons, specifically firearms. Another part of the room was a table with various maps and scrolls, and they both recognized the blueprints, albeit messily drawn, of Ravenholm.

Something caught in Noire's throat. Rubi really was looking for her. Rubi stood in the doorway. "Feel free to freshen up in the bathroom. My place is your place. Get some rest you two. I'll come wake you up when the cook is done making dinner."

With that, she left and Noire sat on the foot of the bed. "It feels...strange...being here."

Shaede decided she was relatively safe here, and stripped herself of her long coat, hanging it on the wall. Her fingers twitched, she wanted to tidy the room up. Every morn at Ravenholm, the beds and rooms would be inspected, soldier and obedience training began as soon as the children walked in, or were dragged in rather. And some habits were hard to break.

She still felt tired, having run all night, and both of them surviving on a little sleep, the bed looked rather inviting…

Shaede moved to strip herself of the belts and pouches, as well as her swords were hung up. She turned to face Noire,

“Are you uncomfortable here?” she asked, taking a seat by her friend and removing her boots, “let us at least have a nap… you look about as tired as I feel,” she smiled, hoping Noire was alright. Noire was like her little sister almost. She briefly pondered if she was jealous of Rubi, but pushed the idea away, Rubi was Noire’s family, she should be happy for the girl.

“At least… at least your family was looking for you.” She could not hide the lingering bitter sadness in her voice.

Noire finally let the exhaustion show, tiredly shedding any unnecessary items for bedtime. She smiled halfheartedly at Shaede's claim at her lack of sleep. Sure, she'd gotten an hour or two, but that would only give you so much energy. As for feeling uncomfortable... "I don't know what I feel."

She let her hair fall, pulling out the chopsticks, raven hair smooth as black silk after the salon, she lied back. At least the bed was comfortable. It invited her to a warm embrace of much needed deep sleep. Soon, sleep was already consuming her. She barely heard the sadness in Shaede's voice. Barely able to stay awake, she forced her eyes open halfway.

"I've yet to ask Rubi about my parents...whether they cared or not. We'll see. Go to sleep. We can think about these things when we can actually think."

===

"Well?" Rubi asked her trusted pilot.

"Well, what?"

The Captain eyed Aidan for a time, trying to gauge on what he was most likely thinking about. "Does it bother you there are people with abnormal abilities on board?"

He knew they weren't...normal. That he gathered easily enough. Still, the look of Noire's hand kind of put him on edge. They looked like deadly claws that could tear through him like he was paper. If that girl was capable of that...what was the other girl capable of? He never caught her name, dammit.

"No," he said finally. "The only thing that bothers me is the mistreatment of people. What the hell were you thinking, sneaking up on that girl! I was thinking she might as well cut your head off!"

Miffed at the scolding, she turned straight ahead, crossing her arms. "Would never happen. Besides, I apologized. No harm done."

"Your arm could have been ripped off."

"I've had worse treatments, believe me."

He paused. "Now that you've found your cousin, what are you going to do now?"

"Oh, I'm still going after Ravenholm, however I plan to destroy that place." Her expression was cold, calculating. "Regardless of what people consider them, people like my cousin and that other girl are still people. They were taken simply because they were different."

Shaede nodded to her friend, and moved to lay beside her, her short raven hair splaying out on the pillow. She sighed tiredly and lay her head to rest.

The world was dark, and she was running. Ahead there was a chair, it sat in a spotlight. She slowed her pace and approached, it was empty. She panted, the only sound in this hollow place.

She moved to sit in the chair, and in front of her, as though a screen was lighting up, she saw images come to focus. It was Noire, standing there with her cousin, the McKay fellow, and a man behind them with blue eyes.

“Goodbye Shaede.” Noire told her, Shaede’s eyes widened,

“What? Noire what’s happening?!”

“I have what I want. This is goodbye.”

“But I—!”

“There she is!” the lights flipped up and she was surrounded by soldiers, Reinhart standing there smugly, his arms folded.

“I have looked for you my pet… come to me.” Shaede’s mind screamed to kill him, to slaughter them all, but her body did not obey. She stood and stepped over to him. “That’s my pet…” he crooned and took her by the neck, placing a collar around her neck, “you will never escape again.”

Shaede awoke with a start.

What a nightmare… she thought to herself. Noire would never do that… no… it was just a dream… She took a deep breath and got out of bed, standing to head out to the helm, she just needed to walk around a bit. She ensured she was not completely dishevelled however, but was still barefoot.

By the time Shaede reached the bridge, the whole ship was quiet as night approached. The only person in the same room as the helm was the pilot himself. The black cowboy hat placed on top of the compass post. Did he know where he was going? His eyes stared ahead in absolute concentration, fixed on his destination. Barely catching her at the corner of his eye, he looked over.

"Good evening," he greeted quietly. "Sleep well?" He looked at the bags under her eyes, frowning slightly. "I guess not. Not that it's any of my business, but did you wish to talk about it?" Seeing the distrust in her expression, he frowned again. "...I guess not." He sighed. "Listen, I understand us...humans don't seem all that trustworthy but not everyone is going to have the same 'ideals' as those folks working at that facility. Regardless of what you may think, I'm actually a very nice guy." He realized he was rambling, soon shutting his mouth.

Maybe he should leave her to her thoughts, he mused. It wasn't any of his business in the least. Normally he stayed out of people's business, so why was he so curious on what she was thinking about? People would normally call her kind monsters, but he knew that she only thought the same thing about people. He wished there was a way to come to an understanding. If only she knew. If only he accepted it.

"I don't know what happened while you girls were in there, but I do know one thing. If you both decide to stick around, you're better off fighting in numbers against the army obviously looking for you. To them, people like you are just...product. That doesn't sit right with me. People aren't things, or tools...or toys." He paused. "The Captain is still going to go after Ravenholm. Free the slaves, destroy the building...y'know. That's why Squire got into pirating. Following the laws of Her Majesty creates too many limitations. Sometimes breaking the law is the right path." He was rambling again. Bloody hell. "Just let me know if I'm boring you," he said.

Shaede was thankful there was only one person on the bridge when she entered, she still felt tired, but the nightmare bothered her. And she didn’t think she would sleep for a while. She watched McKay for a while, just observing him in a relaxed manner before moving in where he might notice her. He turned to look at her and she was impressed he noticed the little things in her appearance… though she was not exactly pleased on the fact he thought she looked tired. He seemed to pick up on her slight frown and took that as her not wanting to talk about herself, and too right. There were some things she was hesitant to tell Noire, for the sake of her own foolish pride.

She was however surprised that he did not think of her as a monster, she watched his face for signs of doubt, but could not see any, either he was telling the truth, or he was a very very good liar.

“You’re not boring me,” she said softly, taking a few steps closer, the ship was stable and her step was slow and graceful; were they at sea she would have gained her sea legs in no time. She kept her silvery eyes on McKay as she moved up to lean on one of the railings. “I have had to listen to lectures on many different things, taught to me by an old man whom was so dull I found more interest in watching grass grow.” She murmured, with a slight smirk she had not spoken much to him, or at all since leaving Ravenholm, almost afraid that if she spoke too much, they might hear her.

Foolish, she chided herself.

“You know I never got your first name,” she told him, realising it herself.
