"From what I know, it's direct. I think they're on Rigel, but for all I know, they could just be faking the source with a Mask Code. I need more time in locating them. But if I'm going to locate them successfully, I need an unregistered unit. A computer that hasn't been put through the security standards that usually send flags if it's so much used illegally. A real hacker's computer."

"Well we have nothing like that here on this planet, hell that's a rarity even on Rigel but if we could get one how long would it take you to at least find out and identity and at least one funding source?"

Finding one might be able to lead to others and a reason.

"why would they want to stage an attack here? to kill you?"

Riley chuckled tiredly. "You know why already. I'm an obstacle. I'm one of the few who can hold my own against them. I'm also a loose end. Besides creating havoc of my own, I spent a lot of my time tracking them down. Let me tell you, it isn't easy. I've tried finding their accounts. They're like fucking ninjas. The only way I found them before is..." she trailed off again, eyes wide. "Get me that fucking monitor pronto. I have an idea."

Jethro looked about.

"Well time is something we have a bit of before they get back here with a monitor so in the meantime lets get a decent perimeter set up and you"

He looked at Riley.

"You're going to tell me how you found them before and what I can do to help track them down and to what I can do here to help get this under control. I know the system but relay systems are going to be a problem, our shut-down likely tripped a few which means some if not all our security systems will be on full alert when they come back on."

Riley pulled away from Tran to lean on the terminal, feeling having returned to her arm by this point. "A few years ago, there was a similar cyber attack on a multi-trillion dollar company, and they went completely bankrupt, and hundreds, if not thousands, lost their jobs because of it. It was a company that dealt in multiple fields. Pharmaceuticals, advanced technology, and military, slash, government contracts. They lost everything, even their products. Some of the employees were suspected with being involved in the digital heist, taking out their network security first, and they were well known for their security."

Sessue's eyes narrowed. "How similar are these events, precisely? That was a company, this is a prison."

"There's really no difference. They both got--get government--military funding. Like I said before though, I don't know their end game. And honestly, it wasn't me who found them first." She paused, and Jethro would know what her silence meant. It was Cillian and Carlos. "It was a huge breech in hacker ethics."

"Computer terrorists have ethics?" he asked skeptically.

Riley snorted. "Yeah, one of the major rules is that we don't hurt anybody unless they absolutely deserve it. Even financially. When I was up and coming in my skills, I started tracking them, and they took that as a threat, and they kill anyone who they deem a threat. The difference between then and now is that then was just a test for their weapon."

"The Worm?" The hacker nodded. Sessue frowned. "Have they made any other attacks between then and now?"

"No."

"That's surprising."

"Not really." At his puzzled expression, she explained further, "After a big job like that, you'd want to lay low for awhile. Besides, they stole trillions of dollars. I think they were pretty much set up financially for awhile."

The TRF Captain exhaled in frustration. "A motive would be nice to know." He looked at the girl. "How the hell did you not know their name but knew about them anyway?"

"Because they never left behind a name until now. I merely kept on their tail because of their code. That's how I recognized that it was them this time. And they may be located on one of the nearby planets, or the signal is bouncing all the way from Earth onto either Regis II or III, making it seem like it's from there. I could find out for sure if I had an unregistered."

"Even if we had one, how will that make a difference?"

"Because they're not expecting me to have access to one...because it's a prison colony. This place is supposed to be top to bottom secure. However, I could make an unregistered, provided I do a hard reformat. That includes taking apart the hardware and removing a couple of chips from the motherboard and the network board."

"well that's all fine and dandy but assuming you can find out where they're from what can we do then? even if I can get the colony back online and secured they can get back in. we're going to need a more permanent solution and I don't mean add a few programs here and there. I want them here."

Jethro looked at her essentially stating he wanted to nail them hard.

The hacker stared hard at the head of security. "It's not going to be that easy--but you already know that, so I don't know why I'm even telling you that." She turned back towards the broken monitor, staring at it. "Well, this is annoying. I could really use a good lay about now." The blunt comment made the silence somewhat uncomfortable. "What's taking Kelvin so long with that monitor? I have work to do."

Sessue stood there, arms crossed. "If only you were this legally productive on Earth."

"Okay, that's it!" Riley turned on him, ready the pounce on the guy in a vicious attack. Sessue's eyes seemed to flash for a moment, ready to take her down if necessary, sending her a tauntingly smug look, daring her to try something.

Jethro did not move to put himself between the two of them, instead he simply lowered his head for a moment and drew a breath.

"do we really have time for this bickering? Kelvin should be on his way back any time now with that replacement, in the mean time we'll have to sit tight and wait it out. for now we're safe"

He turned his attention to Riley

:first thing I want you to do after restoring the systems operating system is to get Hal online he can help get subsystems online and some critical systems, your priority after that is to get the PA system back up, followed by the defense stations with FFAs offline, but not active, not until I say."

He turned to Sessue.

"I want you to be ready to deal with the remaining problems. and I mean whoever is still being aggressive after our stand down order... what happens to them is up to your discretion, prisoner or guard alike. We need to be ready to move fast with low numbers so no room for second guessing."

Riley was still grinding her teeth at Sessue as he turned his attention to Jethro. "Of course. That's my job. Also, I shouldn't have to remind everyone of this, but keep alert for necros. Who knows how many slipped in during the restart."

Great, just what we needed, Riley thought bitterly. Moments later, Kelvin came in with a replacement monitor and she thanked the geek gods. As Tran helped her set up the new monitor, as she still felt numb in her right arm, the screen instantly blipped on the second the cable was secured. Using one hand, she went to work on multiple tasks. Resuming her earlier task to lacing her Robin Program with the entire system, she rebooted the OS with a smug smirk. Next was Hal, and it didn't take her long to reboot the AI with a refreshed list of tasks. Now she onto the PA System and everything else.

"I'm on the last thing now," she stated, quite exhausted by this point.

Normally she could have gone a couple days doing stuff like this without a wink of sleep and lots of energy drinks and black coffee. If she ever got the opportunity, she would crash and burn. Between the pain and her urgency, and basically this entire clusterfuck, she was reaching her limit fast. Still, she pushed and pushed. This hacker would be damned if she was ever beaten by those ZERO fuckers. She wanted revenge, but survival was key at this point.

"Done," was all she said, remaining utterly still, eyes glued to the screen. She would not collapse, she would not tremble, and she certainly would not show weakness.

Jethro waited patiently as everything was being finished. He was looking forward to this being over and once Hal finished with his initial tasks and was free he'd appear here to relay Jethros message to the entire colony. After that things would play out in one of two ways. either a lot of people surrender or a lot of people get killed.

"you know what the best part of all this is... the blame for this attack will fall squarely on the warden, not that he'll lose his job here but it'll be amusing to see how much trouble he gets into. how much longer till the last piece of our plan is ready to go?"

"I told already, I'm done," Riley replied irritably. Men, they don't listen. "They're ready to go, and not only that, ROBIN is inside the system, seeking and annihilating foreign entities, so to speak. Consider it the countermeasure for worms, for both now, and in the future--I can't believe I'm making a prison system I'm a resident of more secure." Sessue's eyes narrowed at her in suspicion. "Relax, Stick, I have no intention of betraying Jethro or Tran."

"Why only them?"

"Because Jethro puts his trust in me, and the Doc is a cool guy. And I treat anybody with the respect they deserve. You're an asshole though, so don't expect me to show you the same loyalty." There was another reason for being loyal to Jethro, but that wasn't the TRF Captain's business. "Yo, Jethro, if you want me to hunt them down, you're gonna have to trust me and give me all the materials I'll need. And that means making a fine-ass unregistered from scratch. Your facility seems to have all the necessary ingredients for my cuisine of awesomeness, so I can easily put it all together. Believe me when I say this, I have a personal score to settle with them. You can't be the only one who gets to nail them hard." She noticed a strange look on some of the others' faces. "I didn't mean sex, you perverts. My god, you guys really have been out here a long time. Jesus, Jethro, how often do you let these guys go on leave to Regis for a release???"

"Poetic, as always," Sessue muttered.

"Maybe you'd lighten up if you got laid once in awhile," she retorted bluntly. Sessue didn't say anything. There was no arguing to be had with her being a smartass.

"lets leave the bickering for later alright? Riley, you'll get your shot at them when we get this under control."

He picked up a small receiver from a box inside the room and flipped a switch, the speakers all over the compound came to life.

"Attention all personal and residents of Savium, This is Captain Jethro Hunt, everyone has five minutes to disarm and report to their nearest resident housing or guard station, after that point the stations defense turrets will become live with their FFAs disarmed, which means all targets outside will be considered as hostile. I repeat this is a Zero tolerance warning, Lethal measures have been implemented, failure to comply with the terms will mean immediate dispatch."

He nodded towards Riley to start a five minute timer on the system.

"Five minutes starting... now."

He flipped the switch on the system and hung the receiver up.

"now we wait and let this shit clean itself up."

With a simple stroke of keys, a timer appeared on screen. Sessue had long since ordered his men to fall back. He turned to Jethro. "As a precaution, I've sent teams of two from my branch to each station." He was silent for a moment before speaking again, this time with a grim tone, "Once this is over, this is not only going to be a lot of paperwork for you and I, but when the board gets their reports, they're going to demand an explanation, personally. They're going to question why and how it got out of control, and whether or not we're fit for our jobs. They'll be looking even more closely because you employed a prisoner. It's not going to matter to them what her contributions are, in which case, she'll be punished for simply looking at a computer, and you may be demoted. You must have realized the risk of taking her under your wing, Hunt."

Riley watched the exchange with the others in silence, until the screen started to act up. Turning back to the monitor, she saw that the timer did not stop. Were they trying to break in to the system again. She gritted her teeth and her fingers returned to the keyboard. Regardless of her efforts, the screen continued to distort with just the timer intact. What the hell was going on? If it wasn't a break-in, then... She waited it out for the moment. They knew they had met their match, and that it was pointless to fight her this way. No, this was something else.

"Yo, Jethro," she called out, cold, and bitterly. "Seems they're sending us a message."

When everyone came closer, numbers, symbols, and basic text began to take form, translating itself to simple words one letter at a time followed by distorted mechanical audio.

"Well done. We must commend you for your efforts. Though you have won our little game today, rest assured that this will not be the last time we will want to play. We are many, and we are strong. Stronger than you. In fact, be prepared for our next battle. We are ZERO Warning. We will attack when you least expect us. We have ways that break men. Our reach is far and deep. You cannot find us." Riley tsked irritably. "Not even ByteMe can find us. And you will die for nothing. Just as Cillian Hunt and Carlos Rei died for nothing."

Something snapped as Riley grabbed the monitor, shaking it violently. "YOU SONS OF BITCHES! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!"

Even as she was pried off by the other guards, kicking and screaming, the message continued without a hitch, "And they were our greatest opponents. Riley..." Riley barely calmed down enough to listen. "You are now our greatest enemy. We would have recruited you if you had not pursued us. Despite your potential, you are no match for us. You are no threat, just as the rest of you are no threat. Even you Jethro Hunt."

The screen returned to normal and the message disappeared. Barely a minute left on the timer. There was silence, even from the hacker who was fuming. Sessue glared at the screen. It was a challenge, he realized, made personally to Jethro and Riley. He felt infuriated, but his outward appearance looked cool and calm, despite the smouldering fire in his eyes. No threat...that in itself was complete bullshit. The message itself sounded like a massive bluff to hide how scared they were.

Riley seemed to have calmed down, slipping to the floor and just sitting there, staring vacantly at the monitor. The timer reached zero, and somehow the number itself pissed her off. Zero, indeed. Just barely, she could hear the sound of turrets way in the distance. Nobody with a working brain was dumb enough to be out in the halls by this point. It was more likely that necros were being shot down.

Jethro listened to the turrets go live, his face never showing emotion at the situation as it had started to wrap up.

"I wouldn't worry about what they say, even if they could pull strings here and there its a puppet show. they'll be here eventually. then its fun and games. Until then we need to prepare for any immediate response to this situation. we're all going to be under fire of some sort. Doctor Tran is likely the least likely to be hit with anything but we can deal with consequences. Sessue, in a few minutes you and your men are on point you know what to do."

He looked down the corrider as some of the turret fire was a little closer.

"Riley, you're back on that system help Hal get the remaining systems back online, the order doesn't matter just whatever you want. I'll be heading back to the office and clear up some things once the situation is a little more secure. for now I'll remain here and provide any support needed. everyone knows what we're doing lets get it done."

Sessue waited til Hunt was gone before regarding Riley with great scrutiny. He noticed the brief exchange between her and the other captain. His eyes narrowed, pondering the meaning behind it. Their interaction was strange by itself. Though Jethro was generally neutral to most of the convicts, since most knew better than to screw with him, Riley was quite different from Jethro. Not only were they both on different sides of the law, but Riley had some kind of unbridled hatred for all cops. But she reacted to Jethro differently, as though they shared a secret Sessue had yet to discover. Rather than worry about it for now, he had some business to attend to.

Riley stood up, watching as most of the men left, with the exception of one. Possibly to keep an eye on her and take her to her room once everything was resolved. Ice blue turned to the screen, ZERO's message still burned in her memory. Scowling loudly, she went back to work, giving Hal their to-do list so to speak. She didn't talk out loud, nor to the guard watching her, just focusing on the task at hand. She'd beaten those bastards...this time.

---

Despite Jethro's claim to hating paperwork, like everybody else in existence, there still ended up being a lot of it. Survivors of the incident had a hell of a mess on their hands. Prisoners were confined indefinitely to their cells, any remaining necros were swiftly eradicated, and during the sanitation process of the prison, Tran spent many sleepless hours scanning every survivor of any infection. Luckily, none would turn into a feral, so he spent the remainder of this arduous process dealing with those that have been injured in any way. Sessue on the other hand...he and his men had watched and sniffed out a good number of those in league with ZERO. He doubted he had them all, but it was a start, telling his men to remain vigilant and keep watch over everyone for any suspicious activity. The ones that have been apprehended were being put through grueling interrogative tests, but they didn't have any more answers to the questions they had.

Riley stood in the shower, eyes closed. It had been a hell of a couple of weeks. She hadn't even been summoned to Jethro's office. She had seen Tran for the standard infection and injury analysis, but even he didn't have time to have a friendly chat with her, being too busy. Christ, what the hell did she care? She was used to being alone. To them, she was still a convict, and to her, they were still... Her thoughts wandered to the faces of Cillian and Carlos, briefly comparing Jethro and Tran to them. It wasn't the same, she told herself firmly. Even if both instances were similar. She never trusted anybody immediately, but Cilly's father or not, she still didn't trust him.

Sighing, she stepped out of the stall, the water automatically turning off, wiping away the condensation on the mirror. "Don't be an idiot," she reminded herself.
