An 8.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Concepcion, Chile (approx 212 miles from Santiago). Happened sometime around 3:30 am. A tsunami warning has been issued. Apparently a tsunami has hit but no word yet on the damage from either the quake or the tsunami.

Less than 24 hours before a major quake hit just north of Okinawa measuring a 7.0 following a 6.6 that hit that area a week ago.

I know that in both So. and northern California, thankfully, we have been having small quakes. These 2 large ones in one day is rather disconcerting to those of us who live in the US's version of quake country.

I pray for the people in and around Chile. It's still dark there so no word yet on how bad things look. We do know that as of now there are at least 2 deaths, 1 being in Santiago.

I just woke up to that news....they have said there have been more deaths since and there will continue to be more deaths, but forunately it still seems to be a relatively low death toll, and lets hope it stays that way

Huge quake hits Chile; tsunami threatens Pacific
By ROBERTO CANDIA and EVA VERGARA - Associated Press Writer
TALCA, Chile -- One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Chile on Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean - roughly a quarter of the globe.
Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant.
It was the strongest earthquake to hit Chile in 50 years. President-elect Sebastian Pinera said more than 120 people died, a number that was rising quickly.

AP - This image from TVN shows Chile's President Michelle Bachelet declares a "state of catastrophe" following earthquake early Saturday morning Feb. 27, 2010. (AP Photo/TVN).

Huge quake hits Chile; tsunami threatens Pacific
The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil - 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east.
In Talca, just 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the epicenter, furniture toppled as the earth shook for more than a minute in something akin to major airplane turbulence. The historic center of town largely collapsed, but most of the buildings of adobe mud and straw were businesses that were not inhabited during the 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST, 0634 GMT) quake.
Neighbors pulled at least five people from the rubble while emergency workers, themselves disoriented, asked for information from reporters.
Collapsed roads and bridges complicated north-south travel in the narrow Andean nation. Electricity, water and phone lines were cut to many areas - meaning there was no word of death or damage from many outlying areas.
In the Chilean capital of Santiago, 200 miles (325 kilometers) northeast of the epicenter, a car dangled from a collapsed overpass, the national Fine Arts Museum was badly damaged and an apartment building's two-story parking lot pancaked, smashing about 50 cars whose alarms rang incessantly.
The jolt set off a tsunami that raced across the Pacific, setting off alarm sirens in Hawaii, Polynesia and Tonga. Tahitian officials banned all traffic on roads less than 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the sea and people in several low-lying island nations were urged to find higher ground.
Hawaii could face its largest waves since 1964 starting at 11:19 a.m. (4:19 p.m. EST, 2119 GMT), according to Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Officials evacuated people and boats near the water and closed shore-side Hilo International Airport.
Experts said tsunami waves were likely to hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores within 24 hours of the earthquake. The U.S. West Coast and Alaska, too, were threatened. In all, 53 nations and territories were subject to tsunami warnings.
Waves 6 feet (1.8 meter) above normal hit Talcahuano near Concepcion 23 minutes after the quake, and President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave swept into a populated area in the Robinson Crusoe Islands, 410 miles (660 kilometers) off the Chilean coast.
Bachelet said she had no information on the number of people injured in the quake. She declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile but said the government has not asked for assistance from other countries.
"The system is functioning. People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have," she said.
Powerful aftershocks rattled Chile's coast - 41 of them magnitude 5 or greater - in the 10 hours after the quake. Six were sizable quakes in their own right, magnitude 6 or greater.
In Santiago, modern buildings are built to withstand earthquakes, but many older ones were heavily damaged, including the Nuestra Senora de la Providencia church, whose bell tower collapsed. A bridge just outside the capital also collapsed, and at least one car flipped upside down. Several hospitals were evacuated due to earthquake damage, Bachelet said.
Santiago's airport will remain closed for at least 24 hours after the passenger terminal suffered major damage, airport director Eduardo del Canto told Chilean television. TV images showed smashed windows, partially collapsed ceilings and pedestrian walkways destroyed.
Santiago's subway was shut as well and hundreds of buses were trapped at a terminal by a damaged bridge, Transportation and Telecommunications Minister said. He urged Chileans to make phone calls or travel only when absolutely necessary.
In Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city and only 70 miles (115 kilometers) from the epicenter, nurses and residents pushed the injured through the streets on stretchers. Others walked around in a daze wrapped in blankets, some carrying infants in their arms. A 15-story building collapsed, leaving only a few floors intact.
"I was on the 8th floor and all of a sudden I was down here," said Fernando Abarzua, marveling that he escaped with no major injuries. He said a relative was still trapped in the rubble six hours after the quake, "but he keeps shouting, saying he's OK."
Marco Vidal, a program director for Grand Circle Travel who was traveling with a group of 34 Americans, was on the 19th floor of the Crown Plaza Santiago hotel when the quake struck.
"All the things start to fall. The lamps, everything, was going on the floor," he said. "I felt terrified."
Cynthia Iocono, from Linwood, Pennsylvania, said she first thought the quake was a train.
"But then I thought, 'Oh, there's no train here.' And then the lamps flew off the dresser and my TV flew off onto the floor and crashed."
The quake struck after concert-goers had left South America's leading music festival in the coastal city of Vina del Mar, where organizers canceled performances on Saturday, the final night of the festival. But it caught partiers leaving a disco.
"It was very bad. People were screaming. Some people were running, others appeared paralyzed. I was one of them," Julio Alvarez told Radio Cooperativa.
The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.
Saturday's quake matched a 1906 temblor off the Ecuadorean coast as the seventh-strongest ever recorded in the world.
Eva Vergara reported from Santiago, Chile. Associated Press Television News cameraman Mauricio Cuevas and writer Eduardo Gallardo in Santiago, and AP writer Sandy Kozel in Washington contributed to this story.

We had a earthquake in the NW of Argentina too (for sure related to the Chilean one) magnitude 6.1.

Check this photos of the quake in Chlie, the #22 is amazing.

I hope there are no more quakes there....

I'm lucky to not live in a place with quakes and tornados and stuff like that. The only thing we have in my city is that when it rains, the city gets flooded (and that's 10 block from my home...)

The same thing happens in Brazil, no earthquake, tornado, hurricane but when it rains, specially in São Paulo, the city gets flooded too and it's a big chaos. Summer rains are a big problem.

I have been trying to contact my friend and his wife but he doesn't answer the telephone. I hope they are safe.

Watching cnn right now and they are showing broadcasts from Hilo, where the wave is supposed to hit the worst, and water is starting to recede and discolor. Sure signs that the waves are starting to make itself known. New Zealand has reported tsunami waves. From California to Alaska, we're under tsunami advisory.

Also heard there was a quake that hit another country, 6.3. I'm not sure but it sounded like they said Africa but I could be completely wrong.

Heard that google.com already has set up on the face page donations to Chile.

Now hearing reports that rivers and Hilo Bay are starting to change. My best friend's uncle lives in Hawaii, not sure what island. I hope he's on higher ground. This is scary. No word on when this will end as there have been some high aftershocks in Chile.

Argentina I think not Africa.
No it was just on the news a few minutes ago they did not say Argentina. I'll go on the USGS website.

6 ft tsunami wave hit Tahiti.

Here's what is on the USGS website for worldwide. USGS A number of 6 and higher but mainly from Chile. No Africa is not listed by they have had some in the past week as well. I think I had it on the Weather Channel (we were in the middle of a bad storm and wanted to get some weather information) and probably got things confused with the quake and the tsunami as they were talking about American Samoa and saying the 6.3 was on the American side of Africa.

Hawaii has a reason to worry. The last time Chile had a massive quake, a 34 ft wave hit Hawaii. Tsunami has begun on the big island in Hawaii 3ft but this is just the first.

I'm watching the live feed as well - it appears that, touch wood, Hawaii has escaped any kind of major devastation, although they won't be given the 'all clear' for at least another hour.

The next major fears are for Japan, as the waves may gather height and momentum by the time it hits their shores.

Japan had a big quake yesterday near Okinawa. They feared a tsunami from that but it didn't happen.

Wouldn't it be cruel irony if that particular quake didn't cause a Tsunami for Japan but the one in Chile did?

Just turned the tv on a few minutes ago and heard about the earthquake and tsunami. Another tragedy for the world. At least the tsunami that hit Hawaii was not as big as it could have been, but I see Japan may get it next.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

Yes it would be.

Hearing on cnn that Ventura, CA had some damage. Since that's near me I had to search for it but nothing on any of the news websites yet on that but that visitors to the harbor were given notice about this. Currently we're under and advisory but we're also having some very heavy rain with thunder and lightening so that may be causing the damage the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center may be referring to.

Seeing on the weather channel the damage in Ventura is due to the tsunami. Minor but there was a big surge, no wave, all buoys were swept away and sand erosion. The Ventura Harbor is pretty much a protected harbor but so far we're all getting lucky with this.

This is what is going on near where I live: California tsunami watch and they are cautioning that we still have 2-4 hours before we get the all clear signal. Looking up for Hawaii, who they're now thinking may have dodged a bullet, Hawai'i tsunami warning.

Oklahoma just had a 4.4 quake. Okay, Mother Nature you can stop now. You can stop all the rain we're having too. I'm sure the people in the fire areas, that we had last year, want it to stop too.

Tsunami is now on its' way to Japan.

Give it sometime. Been there and know what its' like. When San Francisco had a large quake, nothing in comparison, we could not get a hold of our family living near there for a couple of days. It's nerve-wracking, shed lots of tears during that time - my elderly grandmother lived alone and that was freaking me out, but think positive as much as possible and let us know WHEN you hear from them.

or call 1-888-407-4747 to contact relatives in Chile. I'm sure you can tell people they're your cousins or something. I know they've been showing some numbers on the weather channel to call regarding the earthquake. I did see that Verizon Wireless will waive all fees to Chile. Pretty nice thing for them to do.

I woke up to news of a tsunami warning for the Eastern seaboard of Australia due to the earthquake in Chile. I will be keeping an eye on the news today.

Keeping Chileans in my thoughts today.

My friend finally sent me a message. He said he and his family are fine but chaos is everywhere. They are in need of food. I will mail a box to him with some grocery. Another friend said many people are in need of clothing.

If anyone would like to help with food and clothing let me know, send me a pm.

You can make a box and I can give you her address. I will contact the post office to see if they are mailing donations for free, I hope so, if not, you still can do a box with some itens and mail or you can mail me and I'll mail them.

I will let you know the possible donations we can make.

Glad to hear that your friends are okay. I know some organizations are already taking donations and glad to hear the gov't has asked for foreign help. Right now with the problems they're having, not sure if a single person - meaning not an organization would be able to get their package to where it's intended. I would talk to the Red Cross or some of the other relief organizations for help on this before sending any packages out.
