Good luck to anyone who wants them, but why would you? The bidding process is the most overtly corrupt game in the world - a gravy train that makes Brussells look frugal. It disrupts the city for years, costs billions, you can't get a thing done while it's on, and when it's all over, you're left with a big empty complex that nobody wants. Where's the benefit? My sentimental favourite would be Rio, since they have never been in South America. My advice to Chicago is that if they want to benefit from Obamania, stop those freaks carrying on telling everyone he's the anti-Christ. The world is watching and is not seeing the kind of place would promote friendly competition and mutual understanding. If Spain had people running around openly talking about killing their president, would that reflect well on their bid? I know that all politics is local, but that doesn't mean the neighbours can't hear you. |

If Rio wins, good, lots of money will disappear BUT the city will receive heavy investments. Rio deserves better infrastructure, better roads, better public transport, more jobs. The city is beautiful, there is no other city in the world like Rio de Janeiro, I am not saying Rio is better, I am just saying that Rio is unique with those hills and culturally too, the music, the accent, the life style, the food etc. A good opportunity to show to the world the real Rio, a historic city founded in 1565 that was the second capital of Brazil until 1960. Rio is more than beaches and nature. The Amazon is not even close to Rio, as many people think. People will become more educated about Brazil. I won't be surprised if Chicago or Tokyo wins. As you said Bill, the bidding process is corrupt, there are many interests involved. The changes in Rio will make the difference before and after the event. It will not be about building a big complex that nobody wants. In Rio is more than that. A succesfull Olympic and World Cup will bring more tourists, more investments, more jobs after all. Rio, the Marvelous city, won't win, unfortunately no matter how much Italy, France, Portugal and Latin America want it. |

I say back to LA. The last time we hosted the Olympics it was a win-win situation for all. It was privately funded and everyone made a profit. Otherwise I don't care who holds it, just make it a safe time for all. |

Back to LA? I want to see something else even if the something else is Chicago. ![]() LA was not candidate by the way. Madrid will not win, I hope not. Tokyo or Chicago will. Expanding horizons is good sometimes. The world is bigger than our imagination can imagine. |

Chicago could not have hoped for a better ambassador than Michelle Obama to support the city’s candidacy to host the 2016 Olympic Games. She is heading to Copenhagen on October 2 to make the case in person. She said via a press release, “"One of the great honors I have as First Lady is to represent America around the world and it is with great pride that I will go to Copenhagen to make the case for the United States to host the 2016 Olympics… There is no doubt in my mind that Chicago would offer the world a fantastic setting for these historic games and I hope that the Olympic torch will have the chance to burn brightly in my hometown." Pros: The presence of many pre-existing sites. A compact surface area to host the events. An urban development goal to improve conditions in the slums. The support of the Obamas. Cons: Lack of architectural innovation. Unlike the other candidates, this is not an eco-friendly city. Rio de Janeiro - France for Brazil The Brazilian city has the advantage of novelty. If Rio de Janeiro were to win the bid, it would be the first Olympic Games in South America. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has assured his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, that he supports Rio’s bid. Pros: Rio has a vibrant, youthful image. Breathtaking environment - sun, sand, ocean. An environmental project dubbed Carbone Zero Rio to plant trees and reduce carbon emissions. Cons: Safety issues and problematic transport within the city. Also, Brazil also already won the bid to host the World Cup in 2014, so it might be argued they have too much on their plate already. Toyko – Compact and ecological The new Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has made a pet project out of Tokyo’s Olympic bid. Pros: Their proposal is the most ambitious with regards to environmental protection measures. Their modern transport system ensures that athletes and visitors would be able to get around easily. Cons: The nation doesn’t care. Madrid - Looking bleak Madrid is not exactly the frontrunner in this bid. Head of State José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is going so far as to meet with King Juan Carlos to get him behind the cause. Pros: The plan for the Olympic stadium is innovative. 70% of the infrastructure exists already. Cons: It’s far from the ocean, compared to the other candidate cities. And Europe already will be hosting the 2012 Olympics in London. |

How can we stop them??? We have freedom of speech. Just like it couldn't be stopped for Bush. As for running around openly talking about killing the president I think if that were happening the Secret Service would do something about it. Its not like the Strawberry Fields chatroom had a thread about killing Bush and we couldn't do away with the discussion because it would be censorship and a restriction of free speech. (Let's execute George Bush, merged into the What Do You Think Of George Bush thread, Jan. '07) You were against that thread Bill as I am against any of this crap going on now. Alas, there are nuts in the world and on the internet. Didn't someone in England make a movie about Bush's assassination? |

Cleo very good analysis. I would say there is apathy in Chicago among the populace, along with safety issues. We'll know in about 13 hours. |

I'm not stupid, I know LA is not a candidate. I live just outside LA, believe me we would have heard if it was. Sorry, it looks like Rio is the top candidate from all the speculations I've heard on tv and radio. Good luck Chicago. |

Chicago chicago ha ha!! I wonder if Obama's special olymic joke cost them votes. Aparrantly the first round is the closest and maybe if people remembered that, and i'm pretty sure they would have, then maybe that cost a few vital votes. . |

We/Chicago lost in the first round, no victory for Chicago. I'm not sure how the final city is chosen and how the rounds of elimination works. I need to read how it the process works, although I did read it's all corrupted, how sad, especially being the Olympics, where honesty is utmost importance.Congratulations Rio! |
