ABP could buy Michael Jackson’s Beatles rights by Giovanni Legorano 3 July 2009 NETHERLANDS – Dutch pension fund ABP could buy the rights to the Beatles’ songs owned by Michael Jackson through its music publishing investment fund Imagem Music Group (IMG), should the opportunity arise. Imagem managing director Tim Smith confirmed they could be interested – but cautioned on the viability of such transaction. He said: “It is a very complex situation and it might take years until the rights are put on sale, if they are put at all.” He added IMG had not had any contacts related to matter so far. The music publishing investment fund – which posted a return of 8% in 2008 – owns also the rights to some songs by Michael Jackson, such as ‘Remember the time’ and ‘Dangerous’. However, ABP denied Jackson’s death could boost IMG’s profits. Spokesman Michel Mijs said: “In these kinds of portfolios, it is already budgeted that a number of songs will be very popular because of certain circumstances.” IMG controls the publishing rights of several world famous artists – such as Madonna, Britney Spears and the Spice Girls. In addition, it has been very active on the acquisition side. For example, in April this year, it bought licensing agency, The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization (RHO), which represents over 12,000 songs and 900 concert works from all over the world.
