If you don't have any anti-static material you're taking an even bigger risk. Per the classes I've taken in both computers and electronics, we were always grounded when working on the guts of the machine and on anti-static mats.

Metal is anti-static material. You know when you touch a metal doorknob you get a shock? That's ESD right there, and if you don't periodically do that, it may zap the components. Also, don't work in a carpeted room, and don't wear woolen clothes (I remember somebody once saying on a forum to just go naked  ). And make sure the humidity is high.

I mean, imagine a wire so thin you cannot see it with the naked eye -- a tiny, tiny bit of static, even if you can't feel a shock, that would fry it.

Here's another article I found:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/82184/avoid_static_damage_to_your_pc.html

Also found the proper name for yanking out (and replacing) components when the computer is running: Hot swapping/plugging. And apparently you can pop the PSU by doing that. With a hard drive, I mean.

Got another blue screen when playing MP3. Something about IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS (something to do with memory accessing forbidden places, I believe) and a device driver.
I used to have that error and dissapeared when I reinstalled XP. So, try reinstalling Windows.

I think I need to add 1gb of memory to my computer... The thing is that I use Photoshop CS4 and I need to open files of more that 100MB and with 1GB my computer it's about to explote. Windows freezes up and the, after a while is back, but..... It never hungs up!!!!

Win 7 rules!

But I just reinstalled Windows two days ago!

Only happened once, anyways.

Adding a gig of memory never hurt. Unless you have only a 32-bit OS and 4 gigs already. Then it's just a waste of money. Or if you get the wrong type and your computer bursts into flames. Or if you try to shove it in while the computer's running.

I know one guy who says that he would stuff 32 gigs of RAM into his machine, but the motherboard doesn't support it.

Actually metal is a conduit. It conducts electricity the same with water. BTW, you also get static electricity from walls. Does that mean you can touch a wall to ground you? No.

I have 4gigs in my computer but of course 32-bit Windows thinks I have 3 gigs

Yes, conductor is the word I was thinking of. Have you ever heard to drop metal stuff when there is a lightening storm? Because the lightening is basically a huge static electricity so it'll be attracted to the metal.

So suppose you have the motherboard (which is made of METAL) on the table, and you've been walking across carpet... with wool socks. And you're covered in static, so when you touch that motherboard, all that static in your body will go through that, and damage it. For grounding, if you leave it plugged in (make sure the PSU switch is off), and periodically touch the metal (unpainted) part of the case, the static will discharge from your body, through the metal, and down to the ground through the plug.

Now, unless you live in a tin shack, a wall is not good for discharging.
