I went from XP to Vista and I love it. I can't wait until Windows 7 comes out. That's supposed to be even better than Vista. Marked October on my calendar for that. That's when they are supposed to be releasing Windows 7.
Aimee, I feel your pain, I remember when I have my old Compq Persario how many times I got that darned blue screen.

Molly, you're the only person I know that loves Vista. Everyone else I know hates it. I am pre-ordering Windows7 now.

I wouldn't recommend it unless your system requirements can run Vista.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/upgrade-advisor.aspx

Or you can download the RC for free and see how it runs before ordering.

I was skeptical of Vista but now I like it, except when the UAC is being stupid. Turned it off for now 'cause I had to get the debugger info.

And of course there's always Linux. Installed Ubuntu within a virtual machine, no probs. I tried to install a virtual machine inside that and it didn't quite work.

I know that XP can't upgrade to 7, there are things that can be done without having to go to Vista first.

Well, adding a bit more RAM wouldn't hurt, and it's not that expensive either. If you install it yourself, I mean. The cheapest one I found on Newegg was 512 MB DDR2 for $7.99, but that's the cheap kind. And most of them are listed under $25-50, which is cheaper than a new computer, you know? But you gotta be careful to get the right kind, or it won't fit in there.

You can use this memory scanner tool from Crucial to determine what type of RAM you've got, how much your system is able to handle and ... if you'd like, you can purchase it from 'em too:

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

Can be pretty handy if you don't have the time, interest or capacity to decipher the type that you've got. Works on most desktops, and laptops ... unless they're a custom build that isn't fully recognized. It'll still tell you some pertinent details though.

Tried it on a Mac and it works on those too.

That's good to know. I still have lots of memory and as soon as I get my old hd fixed and cleaned I will have another one for storage and backup!

I have this Win 7 installation for about 4 months and it just hunged up one or two times...

I'm in love with this OS! :yahoo:

I have to install the RC because this beta is expiring in 4 days.

I never used Vista  because my PC doesn't have enough memory...

This is the list of all the OSs I used:

Win 3.1 - 3 years
Win 95 - 2 years
Win 98 - 1 year
Win Millenium - 1 week (worst OS ever).
Win XP - 8 years (I used it since I got a beta version and I loved it).
Win 7 - 4 month and counting...

I have used most of those os's with the exception of Millenium. The computer company I used for rebuilding my old 486 was vehemently against it.
