A PAIR of barber’s chairs made famous by The Beatles could attract bids of up to £10,000 when they go on auction in London next week.

Formby businesswoman Tina Morris found the chairs, used in a 1963 Fab Four promotional photo, under 30 years of rubbish in a hairdresser’s wholesaler while she was looking for equipment for her Aqua Relax hair salon.

The owner had renovated one of the three chairs, but could not afford to modernise the others, so Tina bought them for £1,300.

The 47-year-old Beatles fan said: “I came across the barber’s chairs by accident after contacting a salon supplies company about getting some equipment for the salon.

“As soon as I realised they had the same ones used by John, Paul, George and Ringo back in the 1960s, I knew I had to have them.

“They are a piece of musical history. The Beatles became famous for their haircuts and helped create the whole 1960s style.”

The Beatles originally sported the “DA” hairstyle made famous by Tony Curtis.

But by 1963, they had been influenced by their artist friends in Hamburg to adopt their “mop-top” cuts.

Manager Brian Epstein arranged for promotional pictures of their new haircuts to be taken by Hungarian photographer Devo Hoffman.

The photos were shot at Liverpool gents barbers Horne Brothers, in Lord Street, and the rest was history. Within a year, the mop- top look had taken the USA by storm and Beatles wigs were in all the stores.

Tina also owns a lock of John Lennon’s hair, which she bought for £150 from eBay, and is throwing it in with the chairs.

She said: “I had them valued by Jon Baddeley, from the Antiques Roadshow, a few years ago, and he said they were worth £10,000. I had to lie down with a damp flannel.”

The chairs will feature in an entertainment and memorabilia auction to be held at Bonhams of Knightsbridge on Tuesday, June 16.

The Beatles spent the 25th March being photographed in different locations around Liverpool, including Horne Brothers' famous barbershop in Lord Street, the Cavern, and at Paul's house in Forthlin Road. There were three chairs installed in the barber's, one of which lacked a headrest, matching that in which Paul was photographed. This day resulted in some images which are now known around the world, and also saw the 'Beatle' haircut adopted by all four, with Ringo finally exchanging his 1950s' style for the iconic 'moptop'. The chairs were moved from Horne Brothers after many years, seeing further service in several hairdressing businesses in the Liverpool area, before finally being 'retired' by the current owners in 2006.

Sold with a copy of 'With The Beatles: The Historic Photographs Of Dezo Hoffman', Omnibus Press, which includes shots of the visit to the barber's.
