Tech question: The laptop I'm borrowing is a Dell Inspiration 2650 and since I'm using it as a regular computer instead of a portable one do you think it's okay to take the battery out? I have noticed the computer gets pretty hot, which I've read is normal for laptops. I have also read the battery can lose life if it's in the heat too long. My boss, who is letting me borrow the laptop said the battery isn't good anyway, but I don't know how good it is to leave it in if it's going to be plugged in all the time. I've never used a laptop and I'm just wondering about his. And also, is it good to leave the laptop on for hours or should I shut it down after a while. As I said before, I notice it does get hot. It's well ventilated, so that's no issue. I just don't want to ruin anything since it's not my computer. |

I would shut it down if you're not using it. It's wasted energy. Also, they sell fans for laptops. It may be ventilated but laptops aren't like desktops where you can put in a substantial fan to cool it down. |

I leave mine plugged in and I leave it on most of the time. Overheating shouldn't be an issue unless you manage to leave it sitting for hours with the ventilation outlets covered up. (I fell asleep once with the laptop under the covers. ) The laptop shutdown, but after it had cooled down, I powered it back up with no problems.

Cathy, I do turn the computer off when I'm using it. Also, I put the laptop on water bottle tops I had to prop it up. I don't want to invest too much money on this since I'm not sure how long I'm going to have it. I just don't want to damage it sine it's not mine. |

Well, it'll probably be fine ... and some laptops do run hot as a matter of course. You're doing the right thing with being cautious about the vents. If the fan is running then at least you've got airflow to cool the processor (processors get hot), more than likely your company has an extended warranty on the machine. If anything goes sideways with it they can call it in and have an onsite tech come out and tend to it. It's possible that the vent that's tied to the heatsink could use a little clearing out ... you can do that with some compressed air, just look for the vents on the underside, there should be one near the back of the underside of the machine. There should also be a corresponding vent at the back, 90 degree's relative to the one that's on the bottom. If you take the compressed air (i.e. canned air) and point the little straw at the bottom vent, toward the back vent you should be able to rid the vent of any dust, debris, or buildup. Aside from that, as a Dell Technician (DCSE) I'd say that it might need some thermal paste applied to the heatsink, between the processor and the portion of the heatsink that's over the processor. An onsite tech would be qualified to do that ... it'd probably be overkill if it's not giving you any problems though. You could always run a hardware diagnostics test on it, during boot up at the screen with the Dell logo hit the F12 button to go to the "Alternate Boot Menu," should be an option to run diagnostics on it in that area. Just use your arrow buttons to move the cursor down to that option. I tend to put mine to sleep when I'm not using it, hate to wait for the boot process ... although I do shut it down occasionally, every few days. I've known engineers that rarely if ever turn their systems down, they set 'em up so that when they close the lid it goes into hibernation mode (low power level, similar to putting it to sleep). Enjoy your laptop, hope this elongated post helped you feel a little less uneasy 'bout it. |

Going from an environmental standpoint, if plugged in, I would shut it off. It's just wasted energy. I just bought an hp 2133 netbook, which is what I'm typing from, and it seems pretty cool so far. I want to be able to take it places and not have to worry about lugging a big machine. Eventually I will be getting a fan for it, however. It does run warm but it has 4 vents on it. |

If it's connected to a power source, it's a good idea to take the battery out. Unless it's completely empty then you charge it up. There's the risk that the plug gets unplugged and it disappears if battery isn't connected though. As for the overheating, laptops have a bad tendency for that. I use a laptop 9 hours a day. It haven't exploted yet... About the battery, if you have the laptop plugged in, it's better to take it out because it shorts the battery life. Put it over a flat surface, a desk, table, without cloths and it will be fine. |
