I'm just watching the Abbey rd. webcam while the Andrew Marr show is on. I thought they'd be some fans taking pics on a sunday morning. It's a bit overcast but if people haven planned a trip as part of a holiday...

I didn't know it was on a corner. That makes it harder to get a pic like the cover shot

It's not really a corner, just a slight bend. To get the same view as in the album cover you have to stand in the middle of the road! :hyper:

It can be dangerous, as at the height of the tourist season there are fans walking back and forth all the time and holding the traffic up, so you do get a few motorist's getting a bit narked and putting their foot down when they reach the crossing.
With every mistake we must surely be learning.

I noticed three types of Abbey Road visitor photographer types:

1. The ones who are quite content with taking a picture of the zebra crossing from the sidewalk, on their way to or from the studios.

2. The ones who make their way to the monument in the intersection to get a slightly more album-esque angle (though traffic is *heavy* there for much of the day, so it's not to be considered completely safe)

3. The ones who just have to have the exact same angle (extra lunatic-points if they bring a stepladder as the original photographer did). These are the ones most likely to cause at best aggravated and angry drivers and at worst a tragedy.

I understand that for visitors having travelled very far to get there, the effort may seem justified - whereas those of us who can get there more quickly might be less inclined to risk life and limb for the sake of a photo. I just find it hard to see the value of it when the magic of just being there should be enough.

In Paul's Arms!
I was there nearly 5 years ago. We just took piccies from the side as there was quite a bit of traffic and we didn't want to cut short our trip.

Last month I was sitting at the front of a double-decker bus heading south down Abbey Road, that's towards the camera on the album.

I had a good view of the fans walking back and forth holding up the traffic. I was in no hurry whatsoever and was just looking at one girl going half-way across, stopping and doing a pose like on the Paul Is Live album while she had her picture taken, going to the other side then turned round and walked back totally oblivious to the cars she was holding up. When she almost reached the pavement there was a screech of tyres as a car driver had enough and just swerved around her. Luckily she didn't decide to turn around at that point and cross again!

With every mistake we must surely be learning.

The crossing featured on the Beatles cover, as well as the crossing directly north of it, have become popular photo-opportunity areas, despite the road still being a busy thoroughfare for traffic. The iconic Beatles album cover has been parodied many times over the years on the crossing. Dozens of people are involved in accidents each year re-enacting the iconic photo, including a number of deaths. Since 1969, there have been over a hundred deaths at the crossing (although many of these may not have been Beatles-enthusiasts, but merely passers-by).[citation needed
