I think i got the aja album for some long lost reason...No, wait! I got the nightfly by donald fagan, for some long loast reason and a few months later i was hitch-hking from Edinburgh to sheffield, where i'm originally from, when i got picekd up by a guy. He put on a tape and said it was by a group called Sttelly dan. It was the Aja album and when the first song, Black cow started I said. 'it sounds like donald Fagen.'..well i'm sure most if not all of you know what happened next. but the weird thing was that when i said to him 'what do you think of the Nightfly?" he said. 'i've never heard it." so i said 'you're fav band is Steely Dan and you've not heard the Nightfly'...this was in the early 90's. He'd been in S.D all those years and i remember him sayin'g 'my friends keep telling me to listn ot the nightfly'...
I wonder if he's heard i tyet.
so that's how i found out that D.Fagen was the main man for SD...after that car ride i got Aja...and Pretzel logic and the best of. They're the only Dan albums i've heard. altough i'm also familar withh the song King of the world on CTE 'cause i taped it from Stuart maconie's critical list and played it a lot...great song.
i must get all the other albums

SD is one of those bands that I alternate between being a huge admirer of and being really tired of. Sometimes it's just too surcigal for me, and other times it fits the mood or the moments to perfection.

I'd recommend you get "Can't Buy a Thrill" and start digesting it. It's got some amazing stuff on it that never reaches "best of" compilations.

"Countdown to Ecstasy" is worth it just for "Pearl of the Quarter" (and "King of the World").

Back in the early '80s, Steely Dan was my group. I owned every single one of their LPs, including You've Got To Walk It Like You Talk It (or You'll Lose That Beat) and I practically wore a hole through my vinyl collection.

I later went through a period of time in which I didn't listen to them at all (change of BFs, different life circumstances) as they were by now reminders of people and memories I was hoping to forget. :P

Fast forward to last year and a friend's buying me a ticket to see Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in concert. I instantly reconnected with my love of their music, even if Donald Fagen is a bit difficult to *watch* in concert. Not quite as painful as watching Joe Cocker perform, but still a bit of a wince producer.

Btw, I still think Donald Fagen is a bit of a pompous, holier-than-thou ass but that a-hole sure did write and crank out some memorable music.

Just a classic!

We hear you're leaving, that's ok
I thought our little wild time had just begun
I guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and run
But if you have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

I have a friend in town, he's heard your name
We can go out driving on Slow Hand Row
We could stay inside and play games, I don't know
And you could have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

You tell yourself you're not my kind
But you don't even know your mind
And you could have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

:)
happy.
