I notice over the past few months while wathcing Seinfelds that when they order food they don't say please, I'm not sure i've seen them say TY either. Then today I was watching a y/t vid. of a 60mins. special on Bill gates where they went to a burger bar and when Gates ordered a cheeseburger...no, deluxe, he didn't say please after he gave his order. I think if anyone did that in the UK it'd stick out like a throbbing...sore thumb. So, are americans a bit shabby on the P's And Q's front or are Brits a bit too fussy over manners? |

I don't know that I always say please either, but I certainly say thank you once the order is received and think I am a polite person. But you're right, there are plenty of rude people in this world and that includes North Americans for sure. |

So you're basing your opinions of people on a stupid tv show? I always say thank you when I receive my order not sure if I say please but I always say hi I would like........ When the order is read back to me, I say yes please, thank you. I have been to England and Germany and have ordered fast food and restaurant food there and I hardly ever heard anyone say please. Heard the "f" word more there than I do at home. Where's the manners in that? At the Mathews Street Festival, my friend showed great restraint when this older English lady, okay ......biatch, kept complaining about the f'ing Americans ruining f'ing everything. My friend turned to her and said that she is one of those Americans to which the lady said f you! My friend asked her why she hates Americans so much and all she got was because you f'ing ruin everything. What kind of answer is that and where was that woman's manners? Barb's right, there are rude people everywhere but please don't base your opinions on some tv show. If I did that, I would never want to visit other places. Okay, well I've met 'rude Americans' for sure but then there are rude people elsewhere too. I think often it's a case of different places having different mentalities. I spent some time in mainland Europe as a kid, and some things are just very different compared to the UK. Now I'm used to saying 'thanks' when I get off the bus, as an example, but I've never heard that ever when I was abroad. That doesn't necessarily mean people there are rude, for me it was quite normal for a while. Similar thing I've noticed is that queueing is taken very seriously here. I always see very orderly queues at bus stops, shops etc. To me it's a bit stringent, to be honest. Some people get in a huff very easily if someone dares to stand somewhere that compromises the queue. It's a bit laughable. Even if I'm there first, I usually keep to one side and, if anything, I normally let people in first. Now Italy is a totally different story, there's no queues really. So when in Rome, I do as the Romans do. |

I agree, don't base what you see on tv on a whole nation. I'm in South Carolina right now and the people down here are very polite! When I had first came down here for a past visit two years ago, I noticed it and like how polite and friendly people were here. Not to say there aren't polite people in Detroit, there are, I'm one. And I've seen some pretty rude people everywhere, when in NYC, I've seen some very rude Brits hollering about not getting stellar service (when the restruant was slammed and staff shorthanded) and almost to the point verbally abusing the poor waitress. Don't think I heard them say please when ordering or thank you when receiving their food. Politness comes with how you are raised and how well it was instilled into you, not where you live. |

Well that's what i was driving at. Suprise suprise this thread has taken on something of a sensitve dimension. I only meant is it the norm. in the us to say please. I didn't mean to suggest that you don't say thanks. I personally think just sayin' thanks is adequate. I usually say both but only 'cause i don't want them to start jerking me around if I don't say please and they think i'm being rude. If it's the norm in america like the two e.g's I mentioned then it's alright. |

But you were equating your opinion based on some tv shows. That makes a whole big difference. I would never base my opinion on some people based on a tv show. That just isn't the way people are. Yes, some people do act that way but tv shows embellish on that and take it to an extreme. |

you're obviously not dwelling on the question at the end of the OP and taking the whole thing as an attack on american manners whereas if you'd actually read it you'd see they're also a question about how the Brits might be deserving of critisism!!! Edited by Mr.Mustard, May 26 2009, 09:33 AM.
