I started one of these threads on another site yesterday and got a very interesting response. What does this Jethro Tull tune remind you of? |

Sounds a lot like Hotel California to me, if that's what you're suggesting. It's still pretty good, though. I heard Bob Dylan's new album the other day - and it's largely very good, apart from track one seeming to be a re-write of Black Magic Woman. |

The problem is that if someone has to tell you what other song it's supposed to sound like, then it can't be all similar. Yes, the chord sequence is pretty much the same but the different time signatures certainly make a difference. I'm pretty nonplussed by the new Dylan so far. It's rather tuneless to me - just bog standard 12-bar. I know some might say that's hardly the point on a Dylan album but I think he's written a lot of good melodies and I'm far more inclined to absorb the words if they're accompanied by a good tune. |

btw. if you read the OP you'll see it wasn't me who spotted it. Like I said I started a thread like this in the pink Floyd forum i'm on. The Pink Floyd fandom and some posted that. I'm suprised it's not a more well known e.g. Sounds like they settled outta court. One I spotted the other day is this from Alan Parsons Project's I Robot album. It's the last song. Anyone wanna guess what I think it sounds like? Alan Parson's Project song that sounds like another song |

"Plagiarism" is a strong word. At what point does influence become similarity and similarity become theft? |

when it sounds like it or a bit of it does although in the latter instances to what extent it's intentional or not I think is impossible to say. For instance the George My sweet lord thing was only about 3 notes. On MAF's Only Mama knows the chorus sounds like an Abba song. The one that mentions Glasgow but maybe it was just coincidence. the jethro tull one in the OP is definatley not a coincidence. Edited by Mr.Mustard, May 10 2009, 08:26 PM.

The term plagiarism implies that the musician knew that they were stealing a riff or a tune or whatever. I think what we have with the two examples is similarity - nothing more. I don't think Ian Anderson sat down to write his song and thought 'Hmm, I think I'll pinch that Eagles song. It was a hit for them!' There are only eight musical notes, and a finite number ways to put them together. Some tunes are bound to sound like something you've heard before. Whether that similarity is deliberate is another thing. |

And how do you know for sure that it is not a coincidence? Haven't you ever heard the expression, "Great minds think alike,"? ;) Just because the Eagles paid up doesn't mean it was a case of deliberate theft. Often it comes down to how much of a dick the "victim" chooses to be about it. The Beatles have been being ripped off for 40 years. But generally, they accept that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and move on. The Stones on the other hand, will take the money thank you very much. Ironic for a band that made a career out of travelling in the Beatles' wake. What about reposting an opinion expressed by another person on another forum. Is that plagiarism? ;) |

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
|
If George Harrison was still with us, he might have an answer to that question ;) |
|
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' ! I WAS ROBBED BY THAT DEVIL WOMAN | |

It was the other way round. The Tull song predated Hotel California. Didn't you read what I put? |

YOu're joking! Are you seriously suggesting that it could be a coindence the similarity with the Tull song and Hotel California. That's why i made the point about Only Mamma knows. That's just a bit of it that sounds like the Abba song so that could be a coincidence but Hotel California is a blatant plagiarism. They even take their song into an extended jam like Tull! |
