She may not have the looks of being a singer and she's homely looking but OMG she blew my socks off when I saw this. It brought me to tears and still does everytime I see it. I wish I lived in the UK to vote for her. I hope she goes far. GO SUSAN!!!! You have a fan here in the US. :)

oops, molly....i just did an entry without realizing you'd already done one. SHE IS AMAZING. i had goosebumps and am so emotional (in a good way). i think the female judge said it best when she said "this is a wake up call". I LOVE SUSAN. (someone mentioned she should have a makeover....NOOOOOOO WAY -- SHE IS SWEET AND WONDERFUL AS SHE IS).

great article, bill. the sad part is i don't think there is ANYPLACE in the world that would have given her the benefit of the doubt on sight alone, ya know?
this was a humble wake up call and one i wish we would remember always. i think this lady was a blessing sent to us to teach us something.

True. Or maybe she's just a beautiful singer. The point is that she's a beautiful singer. I'm so happy for her that she got this break and the recognition she deserves, but it still depresses me that people have to go on freak-shows like this to get noticed. I fear the author is right. Susan will be the exception that allows the rule. She'll be the one they can point to when they say it's not all about looks, the same way Hollywood offers Kathy Bates as evidence that not every actress is a 24yo size 0 junkie.

It was a wonderful choice of song too. (And that's coming from someone who was in no mood to hear anything from Les Miserables any time soon) She's a lady who can sing about broken dreams in ways the teenage karaoke queens couldn't begin to understand. She hasn't just got talent, she's got authenticity. And she's beautiful.

i am in 100% agreement with you. to me she is a breath of fresh air. i love her personality, she is sweet, has a great humor and something about her that makes her very likeable. this is just proof you can't judge a book by it's cover and why should looks matter at all. she IS beautiful. (simon looks in love on the youtube thang, hahaha).

I watched her first hand on Saturday night and she blew me away with her voice - I love her !!!!

if you want to know more about Susan go to

I hope she makes it into the final :) but I think 'flawless' might have a good chance of winning due to the fact they will appeal to teenage girls :(

Someone has uploaded a song that Ms. Boyle did about 10 years ago for a charity CD ... only 1,000 copies of 'The Millennium Celebration" disc were pressed so it's extremely rare.

Here's a link to a page from yahoo on it, that includes a feed from the youtube page with the song.

It's her version of "Cry me a River" ... and it's quite good.

i searched youtube for flawless and saw their performance! WOW...you may be right...but isn't there an age thing? they are in the 21-30 year old group. i guess it doesn't matter but seems kinda odd they even bother to have age groups if they aren't going to vote in each age group.

oh yes, i didn't think there was an age group thing (although when i heard flawless was in the 20-31 age group i thought they meant talent was arranged in groups but now i understand the group itself has members from 20 to 31 - duh...). i know american idol doesn't have it either but you never see anyone above 30 on that show. when does the show actually pick the winners? i know it's in the beginning stages with auditions, etc., like American Idol. just wondered how they do it compared with AI.

grrrrr, second time i'm doing this. when i submitted it the first time it said, "FORUM DOESN'T EXIST"...anyway, i practically live at the Susan Boyle youtube and from time to time you get a stray comment, "go listen to this person"...so i listened to Shaheen from wales and danged if he ain't great, too. (SB is still #1 to me). so, jayne...if there are any others that deserve a listen...let me know and i'll youtube them. i wish we had Britain's Got Talent here! the competition is hot!

Nancy - last nights episode was a tad disappointing - but Shabeen was really good :) they say he is in competition with Susan

last night was only the second show - they are still going through all the auditions at the mo (which are sometimes the best part of the series)

I know they will have heats then, semis then the final - normally with 6-8 acts being in the final - I think we, being the general public, get to vote in these :)

there are some good comedy acts in this year :) there was a drag queen on last night who either made you laugh or vomit :D you will have to see him to see what I mean

I inadvertently heard her for the first time today during a news item on Michael Grade stepping down as boss of ITV. She does seem to have a pretty voice. I suppose i'm going to have to listen properly now!!

I'm just listening now. I think she's a bit fat...I mean flat.

did your 'girlfriend' at the time try and go forward in her career ?????? was she like Susan????

just because a person's looks may not be the 'norm model status' doesnt mean they shouldn't excel in a talent they have got, I say good for her !!!!! her voice is really good and I hope that she will go far in a career that she loves doing :)

I never said her looks were an issue for me. I just said she's just not that unusual a singer. All that's happened is one of the unglamorous women that are out there that don't get a luck in (pun accidental) has got a platform (pun intended). There are thousands of Susan Boyles out there.

MrMustard, that's exactly why Susan is such a hit - she's the complete antithesis of these primped, airbrushed 'sexy' starlets of today. It shows that you can be anything you want in the world regardless of the lifestyle you lead, IF you want that something badly enough.

Susan has a fabulous, totally untouched natural voice. You can keep your Britneys, your Christinas, your Pinks, all your digitalised music (you don't think Britney or Rihanna sounds that good all the time?) - give me a thousand Susans.

You hit the nail on the head then. Everyone was so surprised because they didn`t expect her to have that voice, they just passed her off as one of the typical auditionees, with big dreams but no singing voice to take it further. She has got an amazing voice and I doubt she would have gotten all this attention and YouTube views if she was your typical Britney

Funny how when a non-sexy woman gets some attention like this, the blowback is that she's nothing more than a decent singer.

No.
Beyonce is a decent singer. Susan Boyle has authenticity. That's the difference.

I commented on another forum that if she were played on the radio and they said it was Elaine Paige, 8 out of 10 people would believe it.

I got slapped down for that. Someone did the experiment and reported that she is far better than Elaine Paige.

So okay, she's not the only person who can sing. That's not the point. The point is that she's had a rough life, she has a lovely personality and as Clare put it, a wonderfully untouched voice. Not only untouched by processors but also by trainers. So many people who show some vocal talent, especially with songs from musicals, have all the character bleached out of their voices by training and direction. I came to know I Dreamed a Dream pretty well last year (as Clare would have earlier) and I noticed she fiddled with the timing a bit at the end and in doing so, made the song her own and showed that she wasn't just imitating someone else's performance. And that was just to a backing tape. Imagine what she could do with an orchestra.

She has a good voice.

However all this media attention is creating some type of anti-celebrity, which in the end, only creates the very thing that she supposedly wasn't.

In short, there's too much hype now and comparisons being thrown about (even in this thread) that are ridiculous imo.

Also I couldn't care less about the new haircut or clothes she's bought. That's what you expect to hear about Paris or Britney. Should it be headline news? No.

Ugh. Yes. Too well. I had decided that if I never heard that song again (along with On My Own, which I actually sang night after night for three weeks) it would be too soon.

Susan's delivery breathed life back into a somewhat hackneyed and often mutilated song.

You know, you don't have to be quite so defensive. I know you're not stupid, but there are better ways of putting your point across. As Bill said, Susan Boyle is not the only 'unglamorous' woman who can sing. The point it, she happens to be the one we know about right now. Hopefully the positive reaction she's gotten will bring others out of the woodwork.

I just hope they don't start passing her off as a novelty. You know, 'She of the Untamed Eyebrows and Rampant Virginity'.

unfortunately, there are some out there that just won't 'get it'. it's far deeper than "what a lovely voice you have". susan is learning disabled. she was pre-judged before she even opened her mouth. not one person in that audience expected to hear the voice that sailed out of her. it humbled a lot of people when they heard her sing so beautifully. it gave several of us a multitude of feelings. as amanda put it....a wake up call. she unknowingly gives hope to many with her bravery and the soon to be accomplishments she will make. she has a lovely personality, just like 'the lady next door' that might invite you in for tea. she is innocent and untouched by the ravages of hollywood (let's hope that never happens). she seems shy and awkward but that didn't keep her from getting up there and belting out with all of her heart. in doing so, she captured the hearts of millions with that bravery. how many normal choir girls end up doing that? i love her sense of humor, she can laugh at herself yet treasure herself as well. she walked out on that stage with courage and conquered the world in the meantime.

and, you know what? she isn't one of those plastic people that did it for fame and money...she did it for her mother.

I do get as far as the 'unexpectedness' of her voice is concerned.

But lots of people come to these shows and sing for people they have lost. That is nothing new.

I also think that she is not the same now as two weeks ago. All this attention and all the new opportunities, not to mention all the opened doors, will mean she is going to move in a completely different world now. Like it or not, she is joining the same celeb world as those that are 'plastic'.

You're right. She seems to have such a sweet nature that she'll be easily manipulated by creeps like Cowell. I hope she has some good friends who can advise her on who to trust. The "wake-up call," (not that it was) is yesterday's news and this week the Sun will be staking out her house and asking her neighbours what time she goes to bed.

I'm under no illusions that her fame is anything more than a new item they're trying out on the menu of celebrity bullsh*t. But that doesn't mean I can't be happy that for three minutes, the bullsh*t took a back seat and a sweet lady did what she wanted to do. I know when I'm being manipulated.

when she opened her mouth to sing, she changed a lot of people's lives and/or thinkings. that's not going to change no matter how 'hollywood' she might end up becoming.

at 47 i'm under the impression she's lead quite a simple and sheltered life. so it's her time to shine. she took care of her elderly mom for a long time so if she's leaving her 'shelter'...well, let her get a good taste of life. she deserves it.

it's important to stay grounded. i believe the beatles stayed pretty grounded and true to themselves and i don't think they ever got too big-headed, if they did at all. they never forgot where they came from.

susan seems a simple woman that might, unfortunately, get caught up into some of the glam of being famous. she won't be hurting anyone (but maybe herself?) and she can reap the rewards of that eventful day.

i think her mom gave her the courage to finally get up there and do it and again, there's nothing wrong with that. if anything, it's a beautiful tribute to the woman who gave birth to her.

i think this whole thing was magical in that it united millions of people in a way i don't think ever happened before, to this multitude. or at least in a particularly harmless way. hey, if i got 42million+ hits on youtube and recording deals up the ying-yang i am pretty sure i wouldn't be the same person i was 2 weeks prior. i'm just very happy for her and thankful to have had the experience.

Of course they were. Brian turned them from leather-clad rockers who ate, smoked and swore onstage, to the scrubbed wholesome Fab Four 'boys' of their early years. It was only after Epstein died that they broke out and did the really trippy sh*t.

I don't think their fundamental personalities changed though. They were still the middle/working class guys they always were. Their image was sweet and wholesome, but that was manufactured to appeal to the masses.

Ooh! Can't agree with you there. Brian died in the second half of 1967, that's after Sgt Pepper, after Strawberry Fields, after Tomorrow Never Knows. It's easy to forget how revolutionary that record was in its day. They had left the "lovable mop-top" image behind long before Brian died.

I agree with the first half. Brian repackaged them in a way that made them palatable to the mass market, which in turn gave them the artistic freedom to change music forever. But they began doing that as early as 1964.

Check her out on YouTube. She's worth a listen and has a rather lovely voice. My first impression was that her vibrato was a bit untamed and that she could do with coaching, but I think coaching would possibly spoil her unique qualities and make her sound like everyone else.

Good luck to her, I say. :)

Of course life is about change. My question though- why do people then seem to think it's wrong for other (young) girls to do what they can to 'glam themselves up' in order to make it in the big time? Isn't that then also understandable?

God knows there is a huge element of fakeness in showbiz. I just don't see how folks who are very anti-reality shows (not you, just saying in general) make exceptions for S.B. There are bound to be talented singers in these type of shows every time, not many truly excellent ones, but they are there just going by the odds. Some don't give them a chance though because they also have pre-conceived notions about them by classing all these shows as crap.

As for Simon Cowell, well I don't mind him. He is what he says on the box. Everyone knows going into these shows what they are expected to be if they end up winning- a manufacured pop product.

people will do what they have to do, i suppose. as long as she doesn't go into liposuction or cosmetic surgery to look like barbie, etc. or get a boob uplift or implants. she said she wouldn't mind a makeover but nothing too drastic coz that would be 'fake'. i admit i go to that youtube every day (a few times a day) just to hear it once again. it somehow uplifts my mood. i think she looks wonderful in her makeover.

A source said: "Susan went for a chestnut colour. Her hairdresser did not want to make any huge changes and said she'd prefer to work with what Susan has already got. She was in the shop on Tuesday to get her eyebrows done and was just the same as always. She's not changed at all."

One local said: "It's really good that Susan decided to keep using this place. She has a wonderful talent - but it's fabulous to see that she's still so down-to-earth. She just had a wee makeover but she'll never go all Hollywood on us."

Heard her cover of Cry Me a River, WOW!! What a soulful voice, think I liked that more than Julie London's cover!

It's just sad that we live in a world that would that hire someone based on looks, rather than talent. If we had more Susans in the music industry, it would be much more easier to listen to! But no, they have to have the dumb blondes who can't sing, so they have to use voice modulators to make them sound like that they can, while this truly gifted and beautiful woman is mocked for her looks. I rather take Susan anyday for my ipod over Lady GaGa or anyone of the like!

it's refreshing that she had the confidence going up there just as she is. no fakeness about her. she said she had a mini-makeover because she has to look 'smart' if she wants to get any further. but she still looks the same, just a bit brushed up. we already know she has the confidence.

it's sad when girls/women feel they have to make themselves over until they are not at all what they used to be, i.e. facelifts, boob implants, cosmetic surgery...it's just sad that these things ARE based on looks.

CRY ME A RIVER is fantastic, that's for sure. she sounds like a sex goddess singing it. hehe. actually, when i first heard her i thought she'd be good as a disney princess in cartoons. that voice would easily fit some betrodden girl who becomes a princess.

now...watch out for 10 year old hollie steel. her voice will throw you off your seats. OMG....talk about another stunning shock. only thing is...she's got the talent but not the experience to really sing with heart as does susan. i mean, you can't look and listen to her and think, "wow, she's been there"....she hasn't an idea. hah.

youtube has as Britain's got Talent channel and i've been following it. there are some really HOT acts there! jayne, if you're reading, who else do you like? i just saw Diversity today and that knife guy...OMG....freaked everyone out...thought he was a goner. diversity and flawless are so similar....i'm just wondering when this kind of dance came into being. i'd never seen it before and now at least two groups are doing it.

lmao'd at the three girls where the one got really snotty with simon and told him to sing and she'd judge him. felt like hitting her in the head when she said BITE ME to amanda. god, what a gutsy brat!

just tuned in Nancy lol :D

sorry been doing my invites (still)

holly was very very good - and when Simon nearly pressed his buzzer too lol :D but she needs (to me) a bit more experience and i think she could make it as a singer/dancer

Diversity and Flawless are very similar but I would put diversity ahead of them - I think the kids in their act work very well

gotta say from last weeks show - i did like the 12 year old lad, but the talk over here is... how did he have the backing track for a second song??? he was adament in the interview before that he was goin to sing Valarie but then when Simon said no he suddenly had another track??

I do like some of the funny ones like the transvestite who did the Beyonce or pussycat song (i think) - but they will probably not win to perform to the Queen which is such a shame because I think her maj loves funny acts :D

I still love these from last year

I didn't like her voice so much to be honest and I think people feel sorry for her. People always love others for 2 reasons:

- when they think the other is perfect and superior
- when they feel sorry for the other

i see what you are saying, michelle, but that is just very basic.

it's the multitude of feelings most people had when she opened her mouth and maybe this affected older people more than peeps your age. it really humbled people, perhaps opening our minds to make us think twice before we pre--judge a person on looks alone (or even sometimes her sillyness in susan's case, which just made her all the more endearing. keep in mind, she IS learning disabled). maybe even a bit of guilt for expecting some crappy performance. she also opened eyes for some to follow their dreams NO MATTER WHAT AGE (HEEE HAAAAA there's hope for us older broads!) and despite life's shortcomings she gave us a bit of hope. in this mad, mad world that was a glimmer of light. it was a pure pleasure to see someone so full of confidence yet seeming to not have much going for her. she didn't let the majority get her down, she kept on going so there was a lot of courage there. it was like watching a movie as you see the judges expressions and the crowd cheering. it was an awakening call. things like this just naturally create the center of attention a 'hero'. her voice was strong, confident, she carried the pitch perfectly, her timing was spot on and at times her voice sounded like a disney princess, have said that before. that being said, of course there are others who have better voices, but not that many that have the powerful background story susan does which makes it all the more delicious. we like to see the underdog rise above....

She looks like a human, act like a human and not like a perfect god, this is what I like about her. I can't feel what you feel about her voice but there's something honest about her. By the way, if she was a coward, she would never go to the show. She's a strong woman. We're all tired of gods.

forgot to say before (and now cant edit my post :( ) I was reading a Uk magazine from a few weeks ago in work the other day - Susan was NOT mentioned in the magazine but other 'superior' acts were - and apart from flawless they have not been on BGT on TV yet :( sounds like we still have lots of good acts still to come :D

i must say BRITAIN DOES HAVE TALENT!! but the thing with jamie pugh...he's just too dreary. susan is cute and happy go lucky and makes you feel good. plus the 'lesson' and feelings she all gave us...i just don't think you can beat that. simon has been a softie this year, that's for sure. never saw him smiling so much (was beginning to wonder if he had teeth!). he was really 'kind' to jamie. i was mesmerized by flawless and then diversity came out. sheesh...brimming with talent these brits are!

if you look susan up on wikipedia it gives a long story about her. interesting. i still watch her vid on youtube every day, a few times a day. it's got over 50 million hits plus they have added up all her entries and total it's more than 129,000,000...whoa...she has a lot of people behind her.

People are already allowing her 'looks', etc. to overshadow her talents. It's just a testament to the nature of how the world chooses to focus on and magnify what they consider a person's flaws instead of maintaining positivity.

Gary, sorry to hijack this thread, but I LOVE your avatar. Who is that precious little pup?

Maybe you can reply on a different thread. Not making a correlation between Susan Boyle and dogs. :nono:

oooooooh, she was QUITE nervous. she had some really off notes in there but it didn't take away from the fact that SHE'S GOT IT. the first 10 seconds had me holding my breath...i mean she was way off...and holding her stomach....i was nervous FOR her. she pretty much got it together by the middle of the song. my fave moment was to see simon giving her a standing ovation. you know how hard he is on everyone, he seems to be getting 'softer'...a 'gentler, kinder simon'??? oh my...i am thrilled she made it into the finals. did that little ballerina dance all night girl do well, too?

thanks for all the info and links.
