After a stint playing with his group the Rebels, George, together with his schoolmate Paul McCartney, joined John Lennon’s Quarrymen. He was fifteen at the time, and the stage was set for The Beatles to emerge as the best possible news in post-War Britain. Over the course of The Beatles' career, Harrison played the role of guitarist, singer and songwriter. His contributions to The Beatles’ catalogue include I Need You, Taxman, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something and Here Comes the Sun, to name only a few. His lifelong interest in Indian culture advanced considerably through his friendship with Ravi Shankar and affected all of The Beatles and their musical explorations. In the years immediately following the break-up of The Beatles, George released his first solo album All Things Must Pass to worldwide acclaim, followed by further major recordings, the bulk of which went gold or platinum. One could argue that The Concert for Bangladesh, featuring George’s friends Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ravi Shankar, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, and others, has had the greatest impact. As a response to a world crisis, it was like nothing that the music business had witnessed up to that point and earned a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1973. In 1987 on the heels of George’s top ten album Cloud Nine he formed the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Handle with Care was the Wilburys’ first single and it caught the world by surprise. The Wilburys would go on to earn a Grammy and are still remembered as the “supergroup” with no equal. After a life of excursions in the arts and spiritual adventures, George Harrison passed away in 2001. The following year, A Concert for George was organized by Eric Clapton and Olivia Harrison. Filmed at The Royal Albert Hall his former bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne created a magical night. The event captured something of the warm and intense impact George had on those fortunate enough to know him well. His songwriting was powerful enough to generate standards in the field. His love for humour and film turned him, almost inadvertently, into an important movie producer. And, without a doubt, his contribution to The Beatles left an indelible mark on that band’s music and character—we hear it still. My boyfriend, the official Beatles/Lennon/and now Harrison starpolisher (along with me and our friend Sue) and friends are already planning on when to get there as there are sure to be a lot of people there. This star has been in the planning stages for about 3 years and we have to thank Councilman Tom LaBonge and City Council press secretary Paula both of whom were instrumental on getting an area in beautiful Griffith Park dedicated to George in 2002, and peace activist (of Alliance for Survival) Jerry Rubin who normally presides over the vigils we have for John and George in Hollywood. And no, this Jerry Rubin is not the late Yippie leader. These 3 people got the ball rolling. I know Jerry and have met Councilman LaBonge and Paula, so very cool of them to go this extra mile for our dear George. So very very exciting!!! |

Jillian, I don't think you would be the only one. I have to caution you, and anyone else who plans on attending, it will be quite a mobhouse and they will likely close off some streets. For John, granted George didn't have the same following John had/has but he is a Beatle, there were apparently a several hundred in attendance. I can tell you that when we have star events, John does get more people in attendance which really makes me sad. I am a Paul fan, but I am a Beatles fan first and foremost. I will go and support ANY of the Beatles no matter if they are John, George, Ringo, or Paul. John was more vocal in the peace movement but George was also vocal but in a less in your face way. |

yea i had that feeling. i plan on getting the metro as early as i can and go get some brekkie, and patiently wait the hours till it begins. plus its another good reason to explore hollywood some more! i really want to bring something for george, but im not sure if it would be appropriate or even what to bring. cathy, if i bring some art would i be able to put it anywhere? |

Not sure about bringing anything as of yet, unless you can get it to either Dhani or Olivia, as there will be lots of security. Hopefully the security at Capitol Records will allow us to use the facilities or else it's gonna be a loooooooooooong day. Maybe something small to put up on the ledge in front of the big Beatles window poster. |

No reason I wont be there although just as long as I can get back to the Lakers game in LA for 7:30pm which I get a feeling I might well be able to do and annoyingly I'll be going back to Hollywood the next day to stay the night prob |
