Revolution--Take 20 surfaces; "The Holy Grail" of unreleased material?

A previously unreleased version of The Beatles' 'Revolution 1' has found its way online.

The recording, which is supposedly 'Take 20' of the song, is available to listen to via a YouTube link below.

'Take 20' of the song is notable, as it appears to bridge the gap between The Beatles' 'Revolution 1' and 'Revolution 9'.

The main difference in the 'new' version of 'Revolution 1' and the version of the same song that appeared on 'The Beatles' (commonly known as 'The White Album') is the track's length. The unreleased version is a full seven minutes longer than its released counterpart.

Lyrically and structure-wise, the song doesn't differ wildly from the released version, although the entire second half of the unreleased version is made up of tape loops, vocal effects and studio trickery - some of which appears to have been sampled by The Beatles for use on their sample-heavy 'Revolution 9' track, which also appears on 'The White Album'.

'Take 20' of the song begins with the band talking in the studio, where John Lennon is heard saying "Take your knickers off and let's go" in a high-pitched voice.

The band then begin playing the song.

Although 'Revolution 1 (Take 20)' soon mutates into five minutes of assorted backwards singing and screaming from the band, the drums, guitars and George Harrison's vocal of "Om-shooby-do-wop" still remain throughout.

Towards the ten-minute mark, the song breaks down into a barrage of speech and from John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Blogs across the internet are hosting the song, with some fans hailing it as 'the holy grail' of unreleased material.

However, it is yet to be officially confirmed as being authentic.

If authentic, and I think it may be, this is an amazing find and definitely bridges the gap between Revolution #1 and Revolution #9. Great discovery!

Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.
Listening right now--it could be a manipulation...still not sure. I'm on my way out the door right now, or I would pull out my Mark Lewishon book and see if he mentions this--I don't remember it.

Even if it is a manipulation--and I'm not saying that it is--it's very interesting to listen to. If real, it's a fantastic find.
I took my brains out and stretched 'em on a rack
Now I'm not so sure I'm ever gonna get 'em back

It doesn't sound that fake...they probably didn't like the full version and cut it. If you listen to the original there is a fade out darlings. :ponder:

Let's see if this version will be confirmed as original or not. If it's not original, I think someone is very smart.

It does sound original.

OMG it must be real because EMI removed it from YouTube.

Damn, I didn't get to hear it. Anyone know if it's anywhere else?

This could be a manipulation but it's is pretty cool and sounds like it could be real.

I like it anyway.

I notice that the video is no longer available due to copyright infringement from EMI. I hope everyone that listened to it realizes they just stole from EMI and the Beatles...

I still think it's real. If it wasn't real EMI would communicate I believe.

The end of the song tells everything.

Doesn't sound right to me. There's the same "Take 2" edit as on the album version, John's voice is ADT'd and there are clearly overdubs. There is a crossfade at about 9 minutes. I'm sure they wouldn't do that on a discarded take.

Ah, I take some of that back.
According to Mark Lewisohn's studio diaries (the last word on such matters) Take 20 was a mixdown of take 18 for overdubs. So yes, it seems like this is the full-length version of what was eventually edited down to make the album version. And quite a find!

I've got it in FLAC if anyone wants a copy. And I'll play it on the next show, whenever I do that again.
Put a puppet on it.

Please remember this is in FLAC format, so be sure you can play these kind of files before downloading.

If in doubt, Google VLC Media Player.
