The site says this page is temporarily unavailable. I wonder why? Perhaps they announced it prematurely? |

Working fine for me. Basically it's asking for a form to be filled out so they can give you the information. Tickets apparently aren't onsale yet. "Paul McCartney Donovan, Eddie Vedder Sheryl Crow, Paul Horn, Moby and more will perform a global benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday, April 4, 2009, in support of the David Lynch Foundation’s international initiative to teach one million children the Transcendental Meditation technique—and change the world overnight." http://www.davidlynchfoundation.org/concert.html |

As much as I love Paul, I just have a big problem with teaching this in public schools. |

In Paul's Arms!

Just what I was about to ask, Lisa. Why?!? I don't practice tm but I would think that it would calm a lot of kids down and help keep that inner peace going. |

Some problems I have with this: 1. I don't have anything against "meditating" (quieting your mind to re-focus) per se but it's what you're meditating on that gives me great concern. According to Lynch's website, not just any old meditation will suffice; it must be specifically TM that the Maharishi teaches. If you research his specific teachings, it encourages reaching further levels of TM, which he says: "The practical program to create Heaven on Earth is to develop bliss consciousness, so that no matter where one may be on earth, one will always be in Heaven. To rise quickly in bliss consciousness and prepare the ground for Heaven on Earth, everyone is invited to participate in this beautiful program of Advanced Techniques." --Maharishi Also he encourages furthering the "education:" One aspect of the TM-Sidhi program is called Yogic Flying. During the first stage of Yogic Flying, the body lifts up and moves forward in short hops. Subjectively one experiences exhilaration, lightness, and bliss. EEG studies show that during this practice, at the moment the body lifts up, coherence is maximum in brain wave activity. This optimum coherence in brain functioning creates perfect mind/body coordination which is expressed by the Yogic Flying. When Yogic Flying is practiced in groups, this influence of coherence spreads throughout the environment, reducing negative tendencies and promoting positive, harmonious trends in the whole society. 2. "However, the Transcendental Meditation technique cannot be learned from a book or a tape. The TM technique is taught on a one-to-one basis, by a highly trained and experienced TM teacher. When you learn to meditate, you will receive your own mantra" How is this possible to accomplish on a large scale with the numbers of children in the schools? You can learn what kinds of teachings this leads to on his own site:http://www.tm.org/sidhi/index.html You see, for me, this goes way beyond a simple method of helping kids focus and/or calm down. You are opening up the mind to a spiritual consciousness that I don't feel is right. It leads to a "religious" experience that is definitely rooted in eastern mysticism and I don't think all children should be subject to that. I think that there are better ways of promoting "inner peace" than an eastern Indian philosophy. Since you asked... ;) |

While I am neither positive or negative about this program because I don't know enough about it at this time, I don't agree with your objection to it Heidi, merely on the ground that it is "rooted in eastern mysticism" and that not "all children should be subject to that." Here is one of the questions and answers from a related website from Dr. William Stixrud. I know this guy is a very respected child psychology expert here in Maryland, and a staff member of the National Children's Hospital. Is TM a cult? William Stixrud, Ph.D. No—of course not. From a solid scientific standpoint, there is absolutely no evidence for such a concern. Millions of people practice the TM technique—many of them have been meditating twice a day for 30 or 40 years—and they are growing in their own individuality, in their clarity of mind, better health, improved relationships. You don't have to believe anything to enjoy the benefits. You don’t have to subscribe to any new kind of philosophy or lifestyle. You just sit and enjoy this simple, natural technique 20 minutes twice a day—or in the case of kids, a shorter time. I’ve known people who have meditated for 30 years and have no knowledge of any philosophy associated with the Transcendental Meditation program and would have no interest in that at all. People who learn the TM technique practice it twice a day because it benefits them. In my own case, when I learned to meditate, someone objected that it may be some kind of disguised Eastern mysticism. I’ve been enjoying the benefits for 33 years and I still don’t know the first thing about Eastern religion. |

I never said it was a "cult." For as many "experts" that you can quote for this, there are others that will not be for it. It reminds me of the global warming thing; there are "experts" on both sides. I have, however, studied cults and various "religions" and the fact that some don't use this as a religion, many do. The Maharishi himself teaches that you can (and should) reach such a state of "bliss" in order to reach "heaven on earth." The fact is that TM is originated in eastern mysticism; just because not everyone takes it to a higher level doesn't mean that is okay to teach this in a public educational system. If they found out that it was beneficial to chant "Allah be praised!" or "Praise the Lord!" do you think that that would be okay? If the goal is to help our children to settle down and concentrate, why not introduce a "generic" form of mediating; one that doesn't eventually encourage things like "yogi flying?" I have a feeling we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. ;) |
