OK, here's another part of my overall reason for feeling jaded by the whole internet forum thing and for some of you, this suggestion may come as a shock. For others, not so much. A few members have voiced the opinion that Lissa (mozart8mytoe) never actually existed. Or still exists as someone else. Or always was someone else. This theory was put to different members of the moderating team at different times and, once one of us brought it up and we started comparing notes, we've been pondering and trying to find out more about it over the last month or so. I did some research work based on IP addresses and it turns out that the mozart8mytoe account was always operated from one specific place which was not New York and, in fact, originated from the exact geographical place as another member who posts here. The same person who informed me of her death, Reverend Dave. We have attempted to contact Reverend Dave by PM and e-mail, but have, as yet, received no reply. Of course, Reverend Dave isn't the only person who was reported to have met Lissa - Adilah is also supposed to have met her. However, the theory then expanded to Adilah, Lissa and Reverend Dave being the same person. Then we have Mia Culpa, who just appeared on our board from nowhere. I suppose, in all fairness, like many people. Lots of people have (innocently) remarked on how similar she and Lissa are in their posting manner. She has also met Reverend Dave. Now, these could be four seperate people. There could be a completely innocent explanation for all of this, but I have definitely come round to believing the theory that Reverend Dave, mozart8mytoe, Mia Culpa and Adilah are all one and the same person. Four intelligent, conservative leaning, international traveling people who have met each other and yet nobody else here. Curiouser and curiouser, as Lewis Carroll once said. I have truly wanted it not to be true ever since the idea was put to me. I was emotionally affected by Lissa's death and I really hate to feel as if my emotions have been played. However, there isn't any evidence of Lissa's existence beyond the virtual world - not that I've seen, anyway. Many of us have grieved for Lissa - and, if she was real, this whole theory has tainted her memory. However, if she wasn't real... well, and this is an understatement, it was a bit of a cruel trick to play on us all. Anyway, seeing as the forum is being wrapped up, I thought that I would share that with you all. It's an interesting theory and it'd be nice if it could be disproved or perhaps even admitted by the person or person(s) involved. There will be no consequence and, when this forum is switched off at the end of the month, they can just disappear into the night. Remember folks, the only evidence we have is circumstantial and there could be four completely innocent people behind this - but I remain to be convinced. So - there you go. You know everything I know about it and I'd rather it be out in the open than be the moderators' badly kept secret. |

I didn't know about any of that. We had a schizophrenic member of Sean's next door and we just treated her/them with kid gloves until she quit, then rejoined, quit again, rejoined with another name and 'friends' and then various of her friends quit, etc. on and on ad nauseum. I thought it was both simultaneously sad and amusing. Others got highly irate at the charades. |

Oh, by the way, just to come clean about something - the member knows as Venus & Mars, the animal rights whacko, well, that was me. It wasn't my personality and they weren't my views - in fact, amusingly enough, I took many views and argument points from PeTA directly, but I did want to test the waters to see how someone new like that would be received on the board. It was amusing for five whole minutes. Especially when I got warned and moderated. |

Well Andy, I would hate to think that we'd been 'played', but to be honest with you, Gary and I had been wondering the same thing, particularly with the fact that Mia seemed so much like Lissa. What a strange (weird) situation if that IS the case. We were heartbroken when Lissa's tragic death was announced via Rev. Dave. You know, I hope that's not the case, but you know there are all sorts of people on the internet, and well, you never can tell, as we have found out. I've noticed that Mia hasn't been around since Dotty called her out the other day. Perhaps her silence speaks louder than words. Yes, it is quite a 'mystery'! Merry

i have always thought this was all a bit shady. from the day mia arrived and sounded like lissa (mia = missing in action)...the wheels in my head were going round and round and i am convinced they are all the same person. i mean, odd that dave is in China, yet met three "perfect women" (who oddly all knew each other, what a small world this must be) from israel. if this is the case, this was MORE than a cruel joke, playing with people's emotions. it was sacreligious, if you ask me. but this is the internet and people can be NASTY here. i'm sorry for the people that may have fallen for it, mourned her, used her quote in signatures. in a perfect world, this would NOT be the case. if anything, BEATLE PEOPLE are usually so honest about things. if rev. dave is so religious and god-fearing, he'd show his face and come clean. not that he hadn't already lost my respect. anyone calling themself a rev. would not have 'betrayed' everyone here. i thank you, andy, for bringing this 'mystery' up. i hope it served whatever purpose rev. dave's intentions were. |

Michelle ~ i also mentioned in the Welcome thread when Mia joined I thought she wrote like someone else. Not quite as wicked as Lissa but close enough. I also spoke to Bill about what I suspected. Then is Reverend Dave a reverend?? I received an email from him doing a questionnaire. One more question ~ How did Bill do his musical radio show of her playing the piano and Adilah singing Funny Valentine? Some people are either very lonely or sick or maybe wanted to make a point how the internet can fool you or all of these. |

Ever wanting to be fair and balanced (and to avoid lawsuits), I must stress that there is the possibility that any one (or all) of Reverend Dave, Adilah, Mia Culpa and mozart8mytoe are completely innocent and that this is the product of creative minds running riot. I have my own beliefs and I'm sure that you all do too, but innocent until proven guilty, as the law in most of our respective lands states. |

No, the character lasted for less than a week, before you joined. It was just a one-off experiment while I was taking a sabbatical from the board. I pretty much got slaughtered by many of the membership at the time for being rude and disrespectful and cut it short when it got a bit too heated. You can use the membership list and find that member to look at my posts as Venus & Mars, but I do stress that they aren't necessarily my opinions, they're more like a humanised PeTA mission statement. |

That thought crossed our minds too, Michelle, however, mozart8mytoe's IP address for the whole time she posted on the board originated from Taiwan, just like Dave's. Adilah and Mia Culpa are both on non-geographic proxy servers and their IP origin cannot be traced. Considering the amount of people who use this board, that is quite rare. Most people have static IP addresses. |

Well, people send me music to play. The first piece from Lissa came from her email. The song from Adilah came from her email. And the rest of Lissa's music came from Dave's email. You also might remember that Dave spoke to us via a phone with a Taiwan prefix. Like all great conspiracy theories, the official story has some holes in it, the conspiracy allegation does not add up (why go to such trouble to create the back-story? Lissa's website? Mia's 'blog? Why us?) and imaginations run wild in the space in between. As Andy has pointed out, he has only revealed the allegation and some inconclusive results. It doesn't prove anything. Equally, it doesn't disprove anything. While we're here, and since things I have said to people in private have become the subject of public speculation, I'll clear a few thing up too. It's been put about and put to me that I'm some kind of idiot for falling for this scam. All I ever did was put the case against the idea that Mia is Lissa. Beyond that, I followed a few basic rules - innocent-until-proven-guilty and if you suspect someone, then you don't alert them to your suspicions until you have proof. I saw no point in playing with people's emotions any more. If anyone feels cheated by any of that, then I apologise. You win, Peter. |

For whatever it's worth, I'd just like to comment that Taiwan and China are not the same country. Although Taiwan is Chinese, the people there are quite separated from the mainland of China, and proud of their distinction. They prefer being thought of as Taiwanese. I know, because years ago I was an avid shortwave radio listener, and I picked up their radio shows. I even communicated with them for a while, and won a small short wave radio, but I digress! Anyhow, my point is, if Lissa and Dave's IP addresses showed they were in Taiwan, then something is haywire, because that indicates that Dave's claims about living in China weren't true. Merry

Yes, it does, Barb and I'm sorry. As admin, I feel as if I should have spotted these things and been asking these questions a long time ago. It would be horrible to be that distrustful of every person who posted here and didn't feel like sharing every little thing about themselves with us. I mean, telling people who you are exactly isn't mandatory on message board, is it? That's the internet, though. You think that you know who you're talking to and really it could be someone completely different. If it helps, at all, I felt completely stupid when I finally pieced together all of the things that just didn't fit - why didn't I think of these things 18 months earlier? This whole thing really knocked me for six when it was mentioned to me and everything thing I investigated just added another question mark to the whole story. I guess all of the real people reveal themselves in the photo threads, at meet-ups and through their other online life. |

What?? Olen is billyshears?? Is that right? Sure had me fooled. And who is Luap? I always felt suspicious about the whole Lissa thing because I never could find anything out on the internet about her. Then when Mia came along, I was very suspicious. What makes someone want to play tricks on people like that. It is pretty sick if you ask me. I place a very big value on truth and honesty in both my daily life and my internet life. I could never pull something like that on people. They must be rolling around laughing at all of us. |

Like others here, I remember commenting in the early days about how similar Mia Culpa seemed to Lissa. As for Adilah and Reverend Dave, how sad IF this has all been a hoax; there's fun and then there's twisted and guess which category this would be in if that were the case? I do find a little odd the story now where Reverend Dave was notified of "Lissa's passing"; who really tells their family/friends/hospital about an internet friend she had met once or twice? |

I understand, Nancy. However, even if this has turned out to be a cruel hoax, what can we actually do about it? It is doubtful that any laws have been broken because there has been no financial gain. If it turns out to be true then you can vent your spleen as much as you want if it makes you feel better, but all I want to know is the truth, so I can stop mourning someone who may not have existed. |

Nobody "knew" anything. All those saying they knew it had just noticed the similarity between Mia and Lissa in the way they express themselves. All we know for certain now is a curious similarity of IP addresses. Keep in mind that the board software has changed since we lost Lissa. I don't know whether all the IP addresses from before the changeover would be correct or if it just saved the last one. I'm not saying that's what happened, but it's a possibility worth considering. As for treating people like mushrooms - and I'm speaking only for myself - I was never going to publically speculate on anything we didn't have hard evidence of. All we have now is circumstantial evidence. While the IP addresses are certainly suspicious, it's not clear evidence that we have been defrauded either. So no-one has been kept in the dark any more than anyone else.

By the way, I remember telling Judy that she was welcome to share my assessment of the situation - which was based on the best of my knowledge at the time - with others if she wanted to. Beyond that though, I am deeply disappointed that comments I shared with people in private have been shared and now made public. |

I have to say that I felt that Mia and Lissa's writings were to similar to not be the same people. That being said, the writings styles were always entertaining. Face it, though how can people from 4 different continents know each other? It was hard enough to get to meet Andy and Fiona in California much less meeting people (and saving one life) from 3 other continents more far apart than England (yes I know it is not a continent) to LA (not even a country but I think you get my gist). Still , it is a possibility.

Ok WHOAH! .. holy sh*t, I missed something here, alot of things actually. WTF!! 1) If this whole Mozart, Mia, Adilah, rev Dav thing is true .. then a big f*ck YOU to the person who played a trick on us. How sick and twisted you are to sit there an fool the whole board about something as DEATH. 2) I have no alias's .. well I could sit here an say that my name isn't Liz, it's Beth, but both come from Elizabeth, so whatever. 3) Why is the board being shutdown and where did I miss that decision?? 4) WTF!! 5) Where do we go from here.. because I for one actually enjoyed this board, it's going to feel strange to not be able to come to a place an talk to the friends that i've made here. I know there is always PM.com, but there's a sh*t load of other people there. This is kinda scarey.. I'm gonna need time to process this..

I never discussed this in private with Bill, but I have with a few other people. I do remember asking Rev. Dave for an address for Lissa's family so I could send my condolences. He said that I would be a stranger to them. I still found that odd. I told him that my family knows very few of my friends from my adult life and I know if something happened to me, they would like the comfort from my friends. No response. However, I didn't see the light. |

|
I'm a cynic. Internet interaction has taught me that most people LIE. That being said...I didn't really know "Lissa"...but I did notice her. I enjoyed reading what she had to say... Her death made me really sad....but it also brought questions. I looked like hell for her obituary...but never found a scrap of info. I found that odd. Her life, her looks...everything about her was pretty damn near perfect...I found that odd. Even still...I kept my thoughts to myself...and tried to believe that no one would f*ck over a forum of people like that. Mia did make me wonder, too... But Rev Dave? I suppose if all the tidbits of info that was known about them...was pooled together...we all would have come to the same conclusion. But, I accepted it...and because I didn't really give it that much thought after awhile...I gave Lissa the benefit of the doubt. Well f*ck me. It just goes to show...you should listen to your gut. Mine tried to tell me something wasn't quite right. I ignored it. It won't happen again. |

I didn't hear anything about the possibility until really recently, but just couldnt, wouldn't believe it - thought it was just gossip. I cannot believe the extent someone would go to create this facade, especially about death, the adoption of a little girl, etc. I did notice the similarities between Lissa and Mia, but that was pretty much where it ended for me. Guess I'm way too naive and trusting. If it is all fake, Lisa's life made for one incredible story or movie script. The last time I heard from Reverend Dave was December 24th - I was inquiring about his school. Edited by BeatleBarb, Jan 14 2009, 02:46 PM.

Bill knows we didn't mean to be offensive. It was a spontaneous comment, not a secret he told us to keep, it was nothing important about your life, your person. If that was so offensive, I apologize Bill. You know me more than everybody else here, you should know I didn't mean to disappoint you. Judy didn't mean to disappoint you. Cheers. |

You know, what strikes me as strange is, if we were played, just how complex the whole thing was. It has to take quite a mind to create four different personalities, with individual backgrounds and histories. What would anyone want to go to all this trouble for, what would be the point? I believed in Lissa. She seemed a softer soul 'behind the scenes' in PM's...not as tough as she appeared in her posts. She seemed to like me for some reason, and during one of my long breaks she went to the trouble of emailing me to see if I was okay. We weren't real close, but I thought it was touching that she seemed to care. I did try to research her too after she 'passed away'. I wasn't sure exactly who I was looking for, but I also tried to find an obituary for her, and went to several stores that carried classical music CD's, searching in vain for any clues. Her death affected me profoundly, and I shared my grief about this incredible young woman with Gary, my sons, and friends and co-workers. I just couldn't believe how someone as talented and brilliant as she was could die so tragically, and at such a young age. I was never close to Rev. Dave, so to me he was an enigma, but I liked him. Some things he said took me close to the line of incredibility, but I wanted to believe that he was a selfless man of the cloth. Adillah was also a gentle soul, kind and quite bright, herself. I believed in her too. I just couldn't quite fit together how she somehow got to meet Lissa, as well as Rev. Dave...it just didn't make sense. And that takes us to Mia Culpa. Gary and I noticed the similarities right away...she was 'Lissa Lite'. I think I started to really doubt her when she claimed to have saved Rev. Dave's life...that was just going TOO far...I mean, come on! How was it that these four people's lives were so intertwined by coincidence? She also said that she attended Paul's concert in Israel and didn't have to go through any security check...that was another boast that struck me as odd. So anyhow, it would be nice if one of these three people would come forward and give us some kind of explanation, just to solve this mystery, but I'm not so sure they will now. It was just so intricate, it boggles my mind that someone would go to so much trouble for an elaborate hoax. Merry

I agree, Merry. I wish that whoever these people are would step forward and admit what they did. When I think back, I found it odd that "Lissa" had told her "sister" that I liked to travel and if I wanted to use her apartment in NYC while she was out of town, to give me the key. Why hadn't she told me this? If she truly was going to let me do this, how was I to know to contact her "sister" and how was I to contact her sister? |

Merry I felt the same way about Mia. She seemed so softer 'behind the scenes' in PM's. She sent me a pm asking about my health and baby and I felt very touched. I feel like she could reach me anytime and I couldn't reach her. I still like her and I feel ridiculous because I have affection for someone I don't know, a stranger behind a username. I think now I learn the lesson. Virtual world? No thanks. |

Linda, did you try to contact Lissa about it through PM's? I wish you had, that might have helped us to work out some of the 'mystery' here. Her response may have been most interesting! Michelle, I noticed you and Mia seemed to take to each other right away, and I really figured you had become close friends. I'm sorry that you didn't get to know her all that well, after all. Lissa was the same way, very caring underneath the rough facade. I still don't understand internet 'alter-egos', or why anybody would feel the need for one, or two. Merry
