My daughter had a seizure and it scared us to death...it's a helpless feeling. Turned out she had epilepsy.

Jett Travolta had Kawasaki syndrome, and a history of seizures. How tragic for Mr Travolta.

Travolta's teenage son dies
10:00 AEST Sat Jan 3 2009
2 hours 46 minutes ago

John Travolta's teenage son Jett has died in the Bahamas after falling ill and hitting his head at his family's vacation home, police say.

A house caretaker found Jett, 16, unconscious in a bathroom early this morning.

He was taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a statement from chief police superintendent Basil Rahming.

The teenager had last been seen going into the bathroom the day before and had a history of seizures, according to the statement.

Police said they are planning an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Another police spokeswoman, Loretta Mackey, said Jett apparently hit his head on the bathtub.

Travolta’s lawyer Michael Ossi told CNN Jett "had a seizure at around 10am [Friday] morning" (4am today AEDT).

"All attempts to revive him were unsuccessful."

Jett's death "was completely out of the blue," Ossi said on the news network's website. "This is the worst day of John's life."

A spokeswoman for Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport said she could not release any information because of privacy concerns.

Jett was the oldest child of Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, who also have an eight-year-old daughter, Ella Blue. The family arrived on a private plane on Monday and had been vacationing at their home in the Old Bahama Bay resort community.

"The Travolta family has become like family to us at Old Bahama Bay and we extend our deepest sympathies to them," said Robert Gidel, president of Ginn Resorts, the property's owner.

Travolta had previously said his son suffered from Kawasaki Syndrome, a condition which can lead to heart disease, TMZ reported.

In a 2002 interview, Preston said her son became extremely sick with a high fever and rash as a three-year-old.

She blamed exposure to carpet-cleaning chemicals for his illness.

One of my friends mentioned about how "scientology didn't help." That comment is one of the rudest things I've ever hears.

I love John Travolta and this really hurts my heart.

My oldest son had Kawasaki Syndrome in 1982. It was rarely heard of then and a doctor from the Phillipines saved my son's life.

My heart goes out to the Travolta family.

Kawasaki Syndrome sounds terrible. I read a little about it. Is that something that is either cured or goes away?

Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki can cause cardiac disease, coronary vasculitis and aortic aneurysms. The disease itself is curable, but it's the cardiac problems it can cause that can kill.

I don't think Kawasaki's killed Jett Travolta. I think he was an undiagnosed autistic and epileptic. Kawasaki's does not cause seizures, which is what Jett suffered.

My fear is that people are going to accuse John & Kelly for being bad parents for not knowing that their son had other problems. I know I read an article (have to find it again) where Kelly Preston was interviewed saying that Jett also suffered from asthma because of a lot of the household products that were used. If I can find that article, I'll post it.

Here's another article:

Autopsy planned in death of John Travolta's son

By Associated Press2 hours, 40 minutes ago

NASSAU, Bahamas - An autopsy is planned for John Travolta's teenage son, who died after apparently hitting his head on the bathtub while the family was vacationing at their home in the Bahamas, authorities said.

Jett Travolta, 16, had last been seen entering the bathroom on Thursday and had a history of seizures, Police Superintendent Basil Rahming said in a statement.

A house caretaker found the teenager unconscious in a bathroom late Friday morning. He was taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the statement said.

Jett apparently hit his head on the bathtub, said a police officer who declined to be named because she was not authorized to speak on the matter.

Family attorney Michael Ossi said in a statement that Jett died suddenly on Friday. Publicists Samantha Mast and Paul Bloch released the statement but could not be reached for additional comment.

Obie Wilchcombe, a parliament member and former tourism minister in the Bahamas, said that an autopsy is planned for Monday, and "we expect a quick resolution."

"John spoke with the minister of health and the doctors and police are at the hospital. They're very, very quick to resolve things," he said.

Wilchcombe said Travolta "spent a tremendous amount of time with Jett."

"He always brought him along. There was a close affectionate relationship and lots of love," Wilchcombe told "Larry King Live" in a live telephone interview. "People in the old Bahama community today are in shock."

Travolta, 54, and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, 46, also have an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu. The family had arrived in the Bahamas on a private plane Tuesday and was vacationing at their home in the Old Bahama Bay resort community.

Preston and Travolta have said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in young children. She blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health, according to People magazine. Both Travolta and Preston are practicing Scientologists.

"I was obsessive about his space being cleaned. We constantly had the carpets cleaned," Travolta said in a 2001 interview with CNN's Larry King, a portion of which was rebroadcast on the "Larry King Live" show Friday night. During that interview, when Jett was 9, Travolta spoke of how his son nearly died when he was 2.

It is unclear whether Jett was taking any medications for his seizures.

The Scientology Celebrity Center in Los Angeles declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport said she could not release any information because of privacy concerns.

Travolta's corporate and commercial attorney, Michael McDermott, said the actor had a very strong relationship with his son.

"There was unspoken communication between the two. ... It's just so hard," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Kelly is very quiet and both are grieving."

McDermott said his family and other friends are with the couple in the Bahamas. The group came for a two-day New Year's celebration and had planned to return to Florida on Sunday.

"We're are all here and trying to help in any way we can," McDermott said. "Their pain is so evident."

Travolta, who gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino on the 1970s television show "Welcome Back, Kotter" and the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever," went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest names. He married Preston in 1991.

A television actress, Preston appeared with Travolta in the 2000 film "Battlefield Earth," based on a novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

My heart aches for John. I don't mean to bring his career into this, but he's a wonderful/talented actor that I like,
and he's also a very wonderful and caring father/husband.

My condolences and Sympathy go out to John, Kelly and the family. R.I.P Jett.

There's no denying that Jett had psychiatric problems, and possibly didn't get the medication/medical assistance he needed. Scientology doesn't hold with psychiatry, so the Travoltas may not have sought the proper help for Jett.

I don't want to turn this into a Scientology bashing, but I believe that if Jett had not been exposed to Scientology health methods he would possibly still be alive. How do you 'detoxify' a kid with those sort of illnesses? Epilepsy and autism were obviously at the forefront of this boy's problems, yet Kelly Preston blamed household chemicals for his health. Jett may have had Kawasaki's, but that does not cause seizures, which he had a medical history of.

That said, it is a tragedy beyond words. No parent should ever have to bury a child. My heart goes out to John, Kelly and Ella Bleu.

I hope the Travoltas don't blame themselves concerning the carpet cleaning. As I mentioned before, my 5 year old son had Kawasaki's Syndrome in 1982 when it was an extremely rare diagnosis. I have been involved with different doctors, research and researchers regarding this syndrome and there is no definitive results with respect to carpet cleaning. In my case and opinion, I believe it is more of an environmental disease and most likely due to contaminated water.

In any event, such a tragedy and my heart goes out to them.
