NEW YORK (Reuters) - Imagine, John Lennon makes a television commercial for charity -- 28 years after his death.

Through the use of digital technology, the former Beatle urges people across the United States to support a campaign by "One Laptop per Child" to deliver tough, solar-powered XO laptop computers to the world's poorest children.

"Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want," a voice and video image of Lennon has been created to say.

"I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way. You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world," says the musician in a play on one his best known songs -- 1971's "Imagine."

Lennon was shot and killed as he and his wife, Yoko Ono, arrived at their Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.

Ono approved the "One Laptop per Child" commercial, which was launched on Thursday and will be shown on donated broadcast and cable time. It can also be seen at www.youtube.com/olpc. (Note: that link doesn't work. View it here)

The "One Laptop per Child" Foundation, created in 2005, is a spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and started producing the XO laptop late last year at a manufacturing cost per machine of less than $200.

It's nice to donate the world's poorest children laptops, but aren't there more important things like healthcare, food, clothing, shelter? I mean knowledge is important as well, but first the most basic of needs need to be met.

If John were alive today, I wonder if he would've agreed to do this ad.

Education is the best way out of poverty. It's the give-a-man-a-fish/teach-a-man-to-fish thing. You help people more by giving them self-reliance rather than making them dependent.

The voice was rubbish and I have problems with anything being attributed to the deceased, no matter how likely it is that they would have approved. But I'm all for the cause.
Put a puppet on it.

Well said, Bill. I like the cause; it bothers me that they would use the deceased to sell the idea. I imagine (no pun intended) that as technology advances we'll only see more of this sort of thing. Marilyn Monroe selling cosmetics; Elvis Presley hawking Cadillacs, Theodore Roosevelt promoting the U.S. National Parks programs.





Okay, I had a fourth deceased person on here, with a pretty good punch line. But looking at it in print I found it to be in poor taste. Go ahead, insert your own, if you're so inclined.

I agree with Bill about education being the key and, although Yoko has obviously OK'd John's image being used in this campaign, it is debatable whether he would have done it himself had he have been alive today.

Why didn't they get a living 'celebrity' to lend their name to this cause? I'm sure Saint Bono of Dublin or Saint Bob of Geldof would have been interested.

John Lennon 'back' to star in new charity advert

Twenty-eight years after his death, John Lennon is a charity spokesperson. A digitally-created version of the singer appears in adverts for One Laptop per Child (OLPC), an organisation that delivers hard-wearing, innovative laptops to children in the developing world.

Although we're accustomed to computer animated ducks, termites and hamburger buns prancing about our television screens, this is probably Lennon's first appearance as a computer-generated campaigner. "Imagine if every child, no matter where in the world they were, could access a universe of knowledge," he says in the commercials.

"They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want," Lennon adds. "I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way."

Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, gave her approval for the advert, which will also appear on the internet. Ono is known for her careful management of Lennon's estate and image, rarely authorising commercial – or even charitable – use.

John Lennon was shot and killed outside the couple's New York apartment in December 1980.

The OLPC foundation, established in 2005, designed and builds the XO laptop. The small, bright green computers are aimed at children in the developing world, serving as general teaching tools but also introducing them to programming and the internet. They come equipped with solar panels, a wireless antenna and are even partially waterproof. Each laptop costs less than $200 (£135) to manufacture.

The modest machines – destined for El Salvador and Nigeria – are still many times more advanced than any computer Lennon ever cast his eyes on. Then again, so are the dancing hamburger buns.

I'm also for the cause, but don't like using dead people in this way regardless of the good intentions. As Clare said, it's creepy and I'm tired of the constant over-usage of the "Imagine" sentiment.

While this is a good enough cause, I really object to resurrecting John from the dead to shill for anything.

First, it's a crappy imitation of his voice and secondly, why do this at all? Why not say: "John Lennon chose to imagine a world in which all could live in peace and without poverty, with equal opportunity. Why not support...etc." Then have his photo or some film? Why do this when he wasn't even alive when laptops were invented?

How tacky, tacky, tacky. Think of this -- maybe in the future, some people won't even know that it wasn't him that did this, that they would think John was alive to talk about this. Also this starts an icky trend where George can come back to "talk" about hunger, in the future Paul could "discuss" the merits of a vegetarian lifestyle, and Ringo could "endorse" peace and love. Maybe even act in a movie together?

This is over the top, and I can't see why Yoko agreed to it.
