What have been some of your favorite CDs, tv shows, movies, etc. of 2008? What have been the highlights, the lowlights, most memorable moments either for you personally or in general?

Great thread. I was planning on something similar soon. :)

I can't really talk about the music of 2008 yet. I'm busy compiling my annual review of the year in music which I will post in the 'Lonely Hearts Club Bands' music section later this month, with any luck.

As for the rest of it, I will have a think and get back to you. ^_^

Highlights

My trip to Strasbourg, France, in January. Meeting new people from all over the world.

When two of the people I met in Strasbourg, a girl from Mexico and a boy from Canada, visited Athens in April.

LIVERPOOL in June. SF meeting. Chinesey and "what a fat b*tch".

My trip to Manchester right after the gig, to visit my friend. Instead of five days, I stayed there two weeks. Also visited my English friend in Huddersfield.

Going back to a bar I avoided for a couple of years. Reuniting with many old faces. Lovely times.

Seeing the love of my life again. Coincidently, at that same bar. Normally it should be in the lowlights, but isn't it nice when you see someone you love? Even if you can't be with them.

My trip to Istanbul in September. I had a crappy summer holiday this year, so this trip sort of made up for it.

My two girlfriends coming back from abroad.

I travelled a lot this year. It was alright.

Gigs

Jon Oliva (Savatage)
Pink Martini
Paul McCartney
Manu Chao
Iron Maiden
Fish (Marillion)
Firehouse
Anathema

Lowlights

my personal life. Too much drama for a wee person.

what is happening right now. Athens at the hands of rioters, and not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow.

Albums
I can't really be arsed with new music. Two albums I thought were alright are
Timesbold - Ill Seen Ill Sung
Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement
Basically I'm just waiting for Andy's list, to know what to check out.

TV Shows

House.
Strawberry Fields: We put the FUN in dysfunctional.

2008?

I didn't make anything except for starting Japanese and Italian classes instead of studying English or Spanish and being homesick 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I moved to many different houses in different cities. I know almost all cities in Texas, I lived in 3.
Migraines, a surgery and a loss of a little someone who could change my world and make me more down to Earth (I float). It's hard to talk about it without tears in my eyes.

This year I saw Joan Jet, Tom Waits and that's all.
Album of the year? I didn't listen to new music but I liked very much Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement

I'm goin' down to Junior's Farm!
2008...here we go...
I voted in a Presidential election for the first time...man, that was insane, but I couldn't get over the fact that the man I voted for was African American...I felt this sense of pride for being able to live in a country where a minority could actually have power.
There were lots of great music for me. I finally completed the Bob Dylan catalog and the release of Tell Tale Signs was the icing on the cake. The only performance I got to see was Dylan's show at the United Palace Theater in NYC and that was just amazing.
Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue was finally re-issued, which drove me nuts...I was so excited!
I finally got to experience the Celtics win a championship, which was awesome.

However, my Grandmother passed away in January and in May, my dad was laid-off from his job in Boston. This year will end in me moving to Middleburgh, Florida, about forty minutes outside of Jacksonville, where my dad currently has a position doing what he always loves to do: program computers. Thankfully, I'll still be going to Hofstra...but my sister, who is planning on going to the University of FL anyway, is a little disappointed that our parents will, after all, be so close to her!

Visit my blog of album reviews and anything else I can think to put on it here!

Born To Be Wild
HIGHLIGHTS IN 2008

New granddaughter born in May

I met Trace Adkins :hyper:

Learned how to shoot trap and shot in my first competition

Learned how to drive a motorcycle and bought a Harley, now I'm a biker chick! :giggle:

I met my goals as far as my health~lost 50 lbs. and got my cholesterol and blood sugar all below normal for which I am very proud! :boogie:

Went to some awesome concerts~
Hank Williams Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Police
The Cure
Crowded House
Charlie Daniels, Shooter Jennings, and 38 Special
Alan Jackson
Trace Adkins, twice
Rain
Another Beatles tribute band that I can't remember the name of!
Loretta Lynn

We met one of the organ recipients from my son's donation and that was so amazing! We've heard from all of them with the exception of the liver recipient...sure wish he'd write.

We had some great times with friends over the summer and fall.

I survived the motorcycle accident virtually unscathed....must have had a guardian angel watching over me. It should have been so much worse.

We're still surviving even though our business is suffering.

LOWLIGHTS

My mother in law died in May.

The terrible economy has affected our business and it's been a struggle to get by.

I haven't been able to get hired anywhere.

The motorcycle accident injured my husband and caused 3 months of pain for him. Lots of medical bills..ugh.

I guess that's about it. Something else will probably pop into my mind later but, all in all, it really was a fairly good year for me.

And in the end...The love you take..Is equal to the love you make.

(((Diane))) I'm happy to see your list of positves is much longer than the negatives. You have a lot of wonderful accomplishments to be proud of. Looks like you had a pretty good year other than not much in the business end. Hopefully the economy will pick up before it's too late for it gets worse.

The very highlight of 2008

The highlight of my life is my trip in London. I was there for 5 weeks alone. I am still in London in my head. And London will stay in my heart forever.

The highlight of Canada is the performance of Paul McCartney in Québec for the 400th anniversary of Québec city.

The hightlight of America is the election of Barack Obama.

That is from my point of view.

On the whole I've had a fantastic year although a bit of a 'year of discovery' for me that has not always been nice, the positive side is I've learnt a lot through it all and who my real friends are.

The highlights for me were:

Visiting a special friend in America again. (She is just a true lady!)

Being in touch with my childhood 'best friend' again who I'd last seen when I was about 22 yrs old and nearly 25 years later we actually get on so well that it's been like stepping back in time! Needless to say we are keeping in touch ;)

My daughters 18th birthday was another special time for me

I go by many names......
some call me badger boy,
some call me wimpypimpy,
others call me totally silk,
some have been known to call me Pip,
some call me Cillit Bang...

Going to Liverpool in January for a week, getting to meet Jayne and the witches in the process and Having Ringo walk right past me

Meeting Paul outside the Brits in Feb. He actually stopped his car to sign my Ram album. Also getting a whoop from Stella and Mary for liking their dad

Meeting Paul again in May in Liverpool. That was pretty cool

The meetup. Brilliant meeting everyone. Also hearing Paul's soundcheck just before. That was quite funny, just standing in a random's garden and I couldnt think of better people to do that with. Chinesey was also brilliant fun

Paul's Liverpool concert... although more coz I got Ricky from the Kaisers drumstick coz he saw I was a wings fan, but also loved their music.I especially love that you all heard it and he did a wings sign hehe... yes there are wings fans out there

Meeting Alex from Franz Ferdinand outside their gig which was only like for 200 people (Thanks so much Daniella)

Going to Kiev. A bizarre thing to do but very worthwhile. I gotta see a country I may never have seen and I gotta see Paul live. Even though it p*ssed it down to start with I just didnt care. I saw his first live performance of Mrs Vandebilt and thats good enough for me

Quebec. That was by far his best gig ever and it was brilliant spending time with a fellow Wings fan. Thanks Lisa for helping make my first trip across the Atlantic so much better. Standing outside his hotel was a tad amusing too

Meeting Paul McCartney the other day. I very much like that I can say I have now met him 3 times in a year (4 in total) Also not only that but getting to meet some great people.I had a ball in that queue and it was great staying over even if there were so few of us. It was a great couple of days. I also liked the unexpected meeting again with Andy, Jim and Peter. It was nice to see them again

It has pretty much been a good year, cannae really complain
I'm a BIGGER Beatles fan than you and I'm an even BIGGER Wings fan than that...
'You're a Paul McCartney fan? No you're a Wings fan'. 'Thankyou Scotland' Ho Hey Ho...

It's been good overall.

- I visited my father's side of the family for the first time in years.
- I travelled to Germany and Italy, and briefly through Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium.
- Met up with a Maccaboard friend again in Bristol.
- I found a new job, and it's been challenging but a good experience so far.

What a fantastic Paul-related year you've had - but you deserve every second of it. You invested time, energy and money in pursuing your passion and you only have my complete respect and admiration for it. If you don't make the effort and take your chances, you get nothing - and you seem to have seized every opportunity you can and you've reaped the rewards.

Nice one, Dani. :)

Team, April I spent 4 nights at the Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust where I saw Noel Fielding, The Fratellis, Muse and an acoustic night with the likes of Sandi Thom, Amy Macdonald, David Gray, Joan Armatrading and The Who....oh and during that time I met The Fratellis and Roger Daltrey!!! In May I saw The Kooks and met Luke at the Brixton Acadamy and then later saw The Pigeon Detectives.
June was Fantastic I met Matt and Dani and also saw Paul in Liverpool. I then saw Franz Ferdinand 3 times at some very small venues in England - I also spoke to Alex at all the gigs. August REM. October The Mighty Boosh twice. November The Killers at The Royal Albert Hall and later Kasabian and now own his tambourine. December The Fratellis, The Zutons and Coldplay.
Next year is promising as things are looking better for my family and I'm meeting up with Dani for a play and some more Franz Ferdinand gigs and lets hope some Paul ones too.
I hope 2008 has been good for all of you and wish you all the best for 2009.

It was a late night (well, early morning, really) trip to a Chinese restaurant in Liverpool after the meet-up. Myself, Fiona, Dani, Jillian, Olia, Peter & his two mates were all present and some of us were slightly drunk. OK, forget the slightly for me. And Peter. There was some really cheesy music playing over the PA system including The Carpenters and Barry Manilow. I made some inappropriate remarks. Peter defended Barry's honour. Dani requested some Wings from the owners of the Chinese and I think they thought she was ordering some chicken wings, although I may have just made that last bit up. What can I tell you, I remember it all through a convenient haze of alcohol.

I don't know who coined the phrase 'Chinesey' - I think it was Dani.

You may get more accurate information from someone who wasn't drinking that night. :P

I don't know who coined the phrase 'Chinesey' - I think it was Dani.
You did.
"Chinesey" is the sort of Asian restaurant that you can't really tell what exactly it is that it serves, it could be chinese, taiwanese, vietnamese, whateverese, but it looks so bad, and you're so drunk, that you don't really bother.

No it was definitely a "chinky" though that term mostly refers to the chippy as they seem to be all run by the chinese community, apart from the Olympia chippy near degsy's. Yeah, i was tipsy and the owner was trying to teach me the greek "hello", though i have decided not to trust anyone who tries to teach me greek, "malaka's" all of them. When i decided to ring you just coz i was in a greek chippy, how me and degs laffed when you said stop talking like that (when i had only been back home for seven hours) i can't understand you.

This hasn't been a good year for me in the sense that I lost 2 people who meant a lot to me, I went through some major personal problems, and I dealt with a drug addiction with one of my kids. I think I've done a lot of growing up this year and I appreciate more than ever just what I have and how close I came to losing it.

I had bought Peter two doubles at the meet-up so that he would show us his Speedos. One of the highlights of the trip for me.

I've been really sorry that we missed the Chinesey.

I've been to quite a few but I'm broke now haha. Yeah Muse are definately worth seeing....both Wembley Stadium and The Royal Albert Hall were great gigs. I reckon they'd probably do some experimental gigs in 2009 playing some of their new material and do a proper tour in 2010 when their new album is scheduled to be released.

chinesey was me and whilst I originally got laughed at for it its as if its making a step to be put in the dictionary. I think I was a tad hyper. As a non drinker excited about seeing Paul and after such a great night I do tend to get a tad silly if I'm with people I actually like but it was generally a funny night due to everyone being there

The meetup. Brilliant meeting everyone. Also hearing Paul's soundcheck just before. That was quite funny, just standing in a random's garden and I couldnt think of better people to do that with. Chinesey was also brilliant fun

Dani, you've described all of my highlights as well. (Except for Chinesey-- wish I could have been there!)

And, you're right: As amazing as Liverpool was, nothing can top the Paul show in Quebec. That was definitely the best gig ever. I'm so glad you were there to share it with me.

Other highlights for me:

Finishing my masters' degree program. :hyper: I've never worked so hard for anything in my life!

Spending a week in New York to celebrate our anniversary in November. Beautiful weather, and time to do everything we wanted.

Let's hope 2009 is just as wonderful!
What a long, strange trip it's been....

In 2008 my grandparents celebrated their 48th anniversary. My parents celebrated their 26th anniversary. We celebrated my grandfather's 91st birthday and my grandmother's 89th birthday.

In early 2008 I spent 4 months in Namibia studying Cephalorhynchus heavisidii and later in the year I was in Iran studying Sousa plumbea. I find dolphins to be extremely interesting animals and I truly believe they are more intelligent than humans.

In July I travelled to Hong Kong and met for the first time in person the man I love. I've since gone back roughly every 2 months. I have just returned from our first Christmas together.

In September my sister and I went to Israel and attended our first Paul McCartney concert. We met him by accident at the hotel and when introduced by hotel staff he mistook us for Israelis and greeted us with "Shalom", the beginning of the typical Hebrew greeting "shalom aleichem". I gave the typical Arabic response, "wa alaikum as salam". This only confused him. I should have given the Hebrew response, "aleichem shalom", but I did not think of it. We chatted briefly before his entourage took him away to follow what must have been a hectic schedule. He seemed a very polite and charming man, but I got the impression that he was giving a performance. I am certain I met the public Paul and not the private one.

My friend Megan, whom some of you will know as Lissa's sister, became engaged to be married and I will be travelling to New York for the wedding in February.

My stallion al Majid sired a foal this year who is expected to become a champion purebred.

I planted some new nyctaginaceae that have recently come in bloom.

I found a new recipe for vada pav.

The past year has been a mixing of happy and sad moments for me.

We began our year with a criminal trial which we and two other couples became involved in (2002 for us). The trial was in January 2008 and ended January 18th, Bert's birthday, with a guilty verdict on 9 felony charges for the wife because she went to trial. The husband pleaded before the trial to 4 counts of felony and had to read into account all 6 other felony charges. Meaning he was charged with 4 but he admits he's guilty on all charges and has to pay restitution on all 10 charges. This was a BIG hurray for us. They get jail time 1 year ~ 3 months good behavior.

My dad was placed in a nursing home earlier this year. He past away in September and we feel he's in a much happier place now and at peace. His alzheimer took a sad toll on him and us. Both of my parents have past away. There is no more going HOME. :-(

I went to my first Alan Jackson concert. I've been wanting to go to one of his concerts forever and it was well worth it. He so handsome and tall. I brought my life size poster with me and he acknowledged it many times. My sister took the poster to be signed by him towards the end of the concert. His great fans, helped my sister upfront and Alan signed my poster.

We went to our yearly play seeing the Jersey Boys with a few couples. Out to dinner and stayed at the Ritz for the night. Had a nice time. I need to start going to a yearly play with my daughters.

Linda flew in for a visit for about 4-5 days. We were able to have her stay longer since she wasn't working at the time. Maybe on her next visit, we can plan on visiting Chicago.

My sister's in-laws celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They are the most cutest and kindest couple I know.

We're still involved with our civil trial which is tied with the criminal trial. Our trial starts again on January 12, 2009.

I'm blessed with a wonderful, caring husband, four grown, responsible kids and eight grandchildren who always make me smile. Which brings me to our new granddaughter Lauren Taylor born May 18th, 2008. Proud parent Elizabeth and Matt and proud older brother Matthew. She is happy most of the time. I've only heard her cry a handful of times, if you want to call that crying. She a very content baby with big blue eyes and pudgy checks. We call her the Gerber baby.

We started a monthly get together with eight ladies learning Stampin Up ideas on card making. One person host the dinner at my house and receives the monthly sales in free merchandise and I supply the drinks and dessert. We've had a lot of fun plus we get to visit with my 2 other sisters and cousin who we don't see that often.

Our Bunco group is in it's 12th year, with only a few minus and additions. we get together the second Monday of the month and play Bunco, Dominos or just gossip some months and have dinner at each others homes. These girls are like my bonus sisters. I can count on them in a moment of crisis, they are always there for you.

That's my year in a nut shell. I'm hoping for a more healthy, blessed and peaceful new year for everyone.
