Couple of things.

Lisa (Retrollama)~ Thanks so much for the votes! Seriously...you are one of the coolest people I met in Liverpool!

Everyone else~ I want to thank the lovely, charming sweeties that typed out ROSE in any category. THANK YOU!

I know I forgot some names of people that I truly like. But I can't see myself going back and changing what I did.
I'm lazy that way. Honest, but lazy. It's just so damn hard to remember so many damn people.
But I love you guys...you KNOW who you are!!! (right?) B)

Why do so many of our boardmembers believe that the Bible was released in 2008? Surely you must all know that it is a little older than that?
I'm assuming it means the book that we read that had the strongest impact on us for 2008. I bought a Bible in October with my birthday money and it has been the book which meant the most to me this year. Sorry if you don't agree. I read 2 Ken Follett books this year that also impacted me but they weren't published this year. They were Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

The Bible is one of those books that, when you discover it's value, it will always be 'the book of the year.'I also believe that it's the #1 best selling book of the year, every year so it deserves the recognition some of us give it.
Mary Ann,

I'm not going to debate the validity of The Bible in this category any further, needless to say that it has been "book of the year" for some members for a few years running (this is backed up by your statement that "The Bible is one of those books that, when you discover it's value, it will always be 'the book of the year'") and, at the risk of repeating myself, that wasn't what this category was created for. If you're a devout Christian then your book of the year is probably going to be The Bible, that's a given - I accept that.

However, if it is a given, then it would be nice to know what other books have touched our members' lives this year, so that we can discover their tastes in literature and perhaps gain recommendations and ideas for books we may want to read ourselves. As for it being the #1 Best-selling book of the year, every year, if the sales figures were only tallied for private, individual purchases of books, rather than the bulk-publishing and bulk-"buying" of Bibles by churches, missionaries and other religious organisations who purchase multiple copies, then that probably wouldn't be the case.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest, Bill - although I am slightly disappointed about what it says about Lee's character. I honestly thought he was a bigger person than that and not one who would be completely taken over by a single-issue, so much so that he has become somewhat obsessed by our differences rather than the many things we all share in common.

That would also disqualify anything on the school syllabus. Are they not still good books?

Popularity does not mean that something is good - just look at the best-selling songs of the last few years. I don't think you can compare, for example, mathematical text books with the Bible. I say this with as much respect as I can - the maths text book concerns itself with fact whereas the Bible is pure opinion.

My point was that people talk about the Bible being the bestseller each year, but without the purchases of the text by churches who have an obvious self-interest in 'spreading the word', this may not necessarily be the case and it possibly helps to over-exaggerate just how religious the populace are, as it is often used as 'evidence' to support the idea of the stength of whole countries' religious beliefs.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I agree that popularity doesn't equate to merit. However, debating the reason for such popularity 1) accepts the original premise, which I do not, and 2) for the sake of fairness, must also be applied to any other text that has what one might unkindly describe as a captive market. ;)

Personally, I'd be just as happy for people to cite the US constitution as book of the year.

Isn't it weird how Andy and I can have a fundamental disagreement of principles yet still remain the best of friends and express our disagreement in a civil way without resorting to bizarre misrepresentation, long screeds of irrelevant articles, passive-aggression, claims to heroism or any other acts of general dickishness.

There must be something wrong with one of us.

Although I feel as if I've maybe overstated my point by now, I do stand by my original comment that anyone can vote for anything they like. All I wanted to do was to say why I created the 'book of the year' category, but, of course, people are welcome to interpret it in any way they wish. As I said, I'm being pro-contemporary literature rather than saying these things for any other motive.

If The Bible is someone's book of the year, then it is their book of the year.

I disagree! I am perfectly capable of indulging in general dickishness. I try not to let it happen to often, though. :P

Whenever there is a discussion, I find myself (generally) attempting to find the middle ground or at least trying to explain myself until I feel as if I've been understood. It doesn't always happen. It's always good to talk about these things because it challenges your own point of view and can help improve your perspective on things. Understanding your own point of view is helpful - attempting to understand others' point of view is probably even more valuable.

Thing is, Bill, you're a good bloke, a mate and I respect you, even though we disagree sometimes. Just as I respect everyone here who can have a civil disagreement and try to find some common ground.

Thank you for understanding my point, Mary Ann, it is very much appreciated! :D

Those are nice suggestions, although perhaps next year we could split them into "Fiction book of the year" and "Non-fiction book of the year"?

That way we have people's choice of novel as well as their chosen religious/political/historical/factual book of the year. Is that a decent compromise? :)

JESUS let it go.

At least we got your "general dickishness" :P out of the way before ruining the awards night ceremony this year.

We understand your point of view. As a concession to that when I make my nominations I will choose a book published this year. Maybe it will keep the Bible from winning again this year. ( By the way I'm sure you'll "LOVE" the replacement. ;) )

p.s. Can we get 24 hour notice of the award presentations, I only caught it by luck last year and it was very amusing, even with the Bible flap.

Well this year I have read surprisingly over ten fiction works in about 7 weeks. However, the books that impact on me (apart from Kinky's sexual diaries 2001-2005) are always historical works and as such can be up to twenty year or more since they have been written.

When people choose the bible they are making a political point, but I could also do that and pick a book promoting the superiority of one race above all others, tales of ethnic cleansing and genocide all in the name of a god or vision.

But if the people are actually saying they read (READ) the bible on a regular basis, for it's supposed spiritual qualities and guidance, would it be too much of us heathens to see some evidence of that. OK damn it I shall give you a big clue, try the Ten Commandants.

Here endeth my vent for today please turn your hymn books to Give Me Some Truth.

OK I just caught up on these last 5 pages or so and I had to LOL over the comments made here about some of our choices for various categories.

It just goes to show that even when voting, one can be very subjective in the interpretation of what they're voting for. Example, I voted for The Bible as my fav book of 2008 not because it was the only book I've read; not because it is a political or religious statement; rather because it is my all-time fav and timeless classic that has touched me the most this year! I'm not trying to prostelize or convert anyone to my beliefs, and no one should feel bad about voting for this if it's their choice.

When I voted for Song of the Year, I voted for one that was very old; but it meant the most to me this year!

Andy, no disrespect to you, but I remember you commented on this very same issue last year with the Bible winning this category. I don't think you should let it bother you; like you said, this is for fun and people will vote for whatever they want. I do thank you for taking the time to create and count votes for this thread. It's all good! :peace:

I'm more than cool with the idea of you doing it here, Lee. No problems from me although I would like to thank LPS for defending my honour! By the way, congratulations to Sean, SOL and all of the members here for reaching the 100,000 post milestone.

Welcome to the 2008 SOL Awards where we nominate our friends for the awards we think they most deserve. There are a few rules that I must insist that you follow, since I am taking the time to count the votes after all ballots are in. Thanks to JeffLynnesBeard for the inspiration and allowing me to use the ballot form at Strawberry Fields for a template here.

Rules:

1) You can vote for yourself, but you CANNOT vote for Sean or SOL for obvious reasons, because Sean has certain advantages and SOL is invisible.
2) You are allowed to nominate up to THREE PEOPLE for each category, but please think hard before you post because the first ballot is final. I am not going back and adding or subtracting names because you forgot them the first time.
3) The nominations will end at midnight (2400) EST on December 31, 2008, so vote early and often.
4) Remember, this is all for fun and games but disputes will be settled in the traditional SOL forum manner: your choice of fruits at ten paces.
5) Above all: have fun with it!!!

In order to vote: Copy and paste this form into your own Reply by highlighting the ballot form then using either the right-click copy and paste buttons or by highlighting the ballot form then pressing the 'Control' and 'C' keys simultaneously to copy and the Control' and 'V' keys simultaneously to paste, then just ad the names of the people you wish to nominate and click Add Reply. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me for help.

For myself, I couldn't care less but I have to say that editing Andy out was rather classless after pinching his idea wholesale for the Sean forum.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
True enough.

For the record, I never suggested or implied that Andy was in any way unhappy with his idea being adopted, except for the fact that it was initially done so without consent.

I just think it's rather uncool to go and delete Andy from the nominations here after Andy confronted Lee with a few facts.

That's my opinion, which I have the right to express. We've all got our rights, y'know. ;) If people think that is in any way churlish of me, go ahead and say so now.

I always try to be kind to everyone which is probably why I've been stalling doing my nominations. I can never make up my mind and want to put down everbody. I'll try to get them done tomorrow, I promise!

Now, am I improved???? I have to laugh at that, but I am trying hard!!
