Wow reverend Dave, thanks for all the votes! That was very unexpected!
I like to vote for people who might not otherwise receive much recognition. Bill developed a reputation for politics a long time ago and he's not about to lose it after this 18 month election. He's going to get the political one so he doesn't need my vote.
Likewise, Andy will get the storyteller one so he doesn't need my vote either. There are quite a few people here who aren't around as much and because of that they don't get as much notice. For me, recognizing these people is the main point of these awards.

Thank you Dave, and I agree. It's not so much that I don't need your vote as I don't deserve it. The category is for being politically astute. I don't think that endlessly banging on about a certain subject necessarily makes one astute in the field.
Put a puppet on it.

Merry Christmas everybody and a Happy New Year. It was great meeting a load of you and hopefully get to meet some of you again soon. Massively apologies for anyone I missed. Even though all that’s happened I’m pretty glad I can call some of you guys my friends and have a good time at meetups or Paul events. Cannae wait till the next time- No problem

Section One - General

Kindest, most respectful member:
So many people I could name here
Funniest or wittiest boardie: again there are a fair few but I think chinesey was the best night ever. It was hilarious. A drunk Peter, Andy and his love for ‘Barry f*cking Manilow’ Complete quality
Most intelligent board member:
Most fascinating member:
Most politically astute boardie:
Peter. Like I said last year I may not always agree with him but he is the only one I talk Politics to
Most entertaining board member:
Most honest boardie:
If it cannae be me this year. I must have become less honest in the space of a year. Then I’d like nothing more than for ROSE (if that’s her real name :P) to be crowned most honest
Most 'cosmically conscious' boardmember:
Most mysterious boardie:
Member you'd most like to have a beer with:
All the ones I have had a beer with- which is technically none of you coz I don’t drink but you know what I mean- whens the next meet up,

Section Two - Music/The Arts

Best Beatles & Beatles-related Newsgetter:
I always remember George being quite good in the first half of the year
Best Beatles/Paul knowledge:
Greatest overall musical knowledge:
Andy and Daniella but they tend to be the ones I talk about other music to
Biggest Paul Fanatic: I wish I could say more here.(and of course I cant say myself even though we all know I am  ) Obviously there are a load of us but for this occasion I’m gonna say Lisa (Retro) for coming to Quebec with me. Was the best gig ever and there was loads of Paul chat. It was quality and hopefully some day soon will occur again, Linda for her love of Paul, had a good time with you in Edinburgh and Liverpool, your years of undying love for Paul says it all and lastly Peter coz I know how much it meant to finally meet your hero. Now we can hopefully brag together.
I know this doesn’t count but I still want to give a special mention to everyone who was in Liverpool, for the meetup or whatever. The people who were all outside the soundcheck as well. Belting

Song Of The Year: Travelling Light, The Fireman
Musical Artist/Group Of The Year: MGMT and The Fireman
Album Of The Year: Oracular Spectacular MGMT closely followed by The Fireman’s Electric Arguments
Favourite Concert Of The Year: Paul McCartney, Quebec, July. That was the best gig ever I don’t care what anyone says. Even just for Mrs Vandebilt and Too Many People
Movie Of The Year: Batman
Book Of The Year: The Beatles in Scotland- for obvious reasons, would be good if Paul would actually come soon though
Man Of The Year: Macca and I can assure you thats gonna be pretty much the case until the unthinkable happens

Hero Of The Year: Gordon Brown (through his own admission, He did after all say he saved the world)
Villain Of The Year: Sarah Palin

Section Four - Special Awards

The 'Mom' of the board: Jayne again even though she is still far to young to be my mother, but her commitment to looking after everyone in Liverpool says it all
The 'Pop' of the board: Jim, This is more because he got me on the tele, Ta very much haha. Nah hes a good guy and I’ve always had good chat with him whenever I’ve met him in real life or the computer world
The 'Get A Room' award for the biggest flirt: OMG Peter
The Heather Mills Award for the biggest drama queen: There are a few
The 'Oscar' for grouchiness: The perception is somewhat different to the reality (of course that instantly makes me sound grouchy)
The Letterbox award for dedication to posting:
Best overall contribution to all sections of the board:

Wow, Olen...thanks! I've never been nominated for these categories before... :boogie:

A big thank you to those who voted for me in some other categories....it's the first year that I got some votes and although it's for "fun" it is neat to be recognized amongst friends that I've met here online and some in Liverpool this year! And I look forward to getting to know many of you that have been here awhile that I don't know too well and to meeting some of the newer members here, too!

BIG HUGS to you ALL!

Why do so many of our boardmembers believe that the Bible was released in 2008? Surely you must all know that it is a little older than that?

You didn't specify that it had to have been published this year. ;)

It's implied. Just like the album of the year, the movie of the year, etc.

The category of 'Book of the year' was created so that people could share with other members their favourite read of the year in order to see what books out there are, in our members' opinions, worth reading - not just so people can express their religious views in leiu of a proper response to that category.

People's favourite album may be 'Revolver' by The Beatles, for example, but to name it their 2008 album of the year would miss the point of that category - and I would probably point that out, as well. Perhaps it just goes to show that a lot of people just don't read books any more, which is sad.

If the Bible is someone's favourite read of the year then why should they not say so? Since when does a simple statement of fact become "espousing religious views"?

If someone picked Neil Young's Living With War as the best album they heard all year, would they be taken to task for espousing political views in a poll question that was supposed to be about music? No-one got called out for choosing Albums of the Year that weren't released in 2008 or other books that weren't published this year (The Audacity of Hope was published in 2006). Why so uncomfortable with people mentioning the Bible?

Thanks Dorothy. If you hadn't have said that, I wouldn't have known that The Bible was a book to read. I'd have fried it, lightly, in olive oil with some field mushrooms, but now I know what to do with it. :P

Bill, If you read the results summary of last year's awards, I picked out the songs and albums that weren't released in 2007 that gained a lot of votes. As I said, it is just using the category for something that it wasn't intended for - it was meant to spread the love of literature, for people to let others know what new books have rocked their world during 2008 and for people to share their favourite reads of the year - nothing to do with the fact that it is The Bible which will, obviously, win the category this year - and that's why I've picked up on it - it has stood out as a clear winner already. Besides, it's basically a religious reference book and I'd have the same feeling if someone put 'The Encyclopadia' or 'The Dictionary' as a response.

They're all important publications, sure, but as an entertaining read on an objective level, they - and the Bible - don't really cut the mustard - I've never seen such liberal useage of the word 'begat'. As for putting it down in that category being an expression of faith - you and I both know that The Bible isn't just 'a book'. How could you possibly compare Nick Hornby's latest novel with an adaptation of the scriptures which form the basis of the Christian faith?

As for your example, I don't think that anyone, even ardent Neil Young fans, could pick Living With War as their favourite album of 2006, as it was very... patchy - and I think I'm being kind, there. Unless it was the only album they bought. In which case, perhaps they should widen their horizons a little.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Anyway, people can nominate whatever they like. Nominate Jesus Christ as person of the year if they want. I will count them and declare the results as per usual. If the 2008 Book of the year, as selected by our members is The Bible, then that is what it is.

Apologies for wanting those categories to have some kind of contemporary cultural relevance. It's my problem, I'll get over it.

Well said. It should not be necessary to explain that book of the year category is created to make people aware of good books that came out this year. It's the same with the other categories, it is not there for people to say what their favorite books, albums etc are. If it is ok to vote for the bible in the book of year category I'll change my nominations. Book of the Year would be The Da Vinci Code. I'll vote for it every year from now on...

I suppose, when it comes down to it, it is OK to vote for anything in any category, but it ultimately defeats the point of it. What I don't want to turn this into is a religious debate, because that wasn't my aim. I'm pro-exposure of contemporary literature rather than anti-Bible and I think it is important for me to make that clear!

Two things:

I thought we had established that we were not going to debate anyone's choices.

And no-one has suggested that the Bible and the new Nick Hornby are in any way comparable. However, they are both books and that's all the category mentioned. Is choosing The Audacity of Hope also using the category for something it wasn't intended for? If not, them I'm sorry, but I'm calling double standards. ;)

Call it all you like, it doesn't make it true. As I said, I picked up on The Bible because, at the moment, it is a clear winner in that category. Even though The Audacity Of Hope is a couple of years old, I think that people could quite legitimately have believed that it came out this year and, certainly, owing to American political events, have only noticed it this year. I don't think that anyone could legitimately believe that The Bible is a new book. Truth is, I didn't really notice The Audacity Of Hope being voted for much this year, whereas The Bible is an ever-present in the awards. I think it tied for first place last year, if my memory serves me right. Anyway, I know that Barack Obama is a prophet of sorts, but I couldn't really compare his book with The Bible - and I'm surprised that you have. (j/k) ;)

I'm not debating anyone's choices, I'm pointing out the original purpose of the categories, which, as the awards' creator (excuse the ego), I think I'm well within my rights to do. :)

Truth is, I'm open-minded about the music I listen to and the books I read. I'm open to recommendations and have checked out numerous albums and artists that fellow board members have enthused about here.

It's just disappointing when I can't really get anything from people's nominations in those end of the year favourites. It's nice to be introduced to a great piece of work you've overlooked and, as I've said, I've already read The Bible.

Point taken. It sometimes pays to make big hairy deals out of things.

In keeping with that, here are my recommendations for Book of the Year

Eat Pray Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
A Household Guide To Dying - Debra Adelaide
Those Faraday Girls - Monica McInerney
The Spare Room - Helen Garner
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini

First, a big hearty “thank you” to those of you that voted for me. Your nominations mean so much -- I am truly flattered! Although I don’t post here as often as I’d like, you guys have practically become “family” to me in the short time we’ve been together. It was a pleasure to meet (and re-connect with) so many of you in Liverpool!

After a hectic couple of weeks, I have finally had a chance to work on my nominations. I wish I could vote for everyone here, but as you know, we are limited to only three names per category. So, apologies in advance if I’ve left you out…

I purchased the Audacity of Hope this year, so I didn't read it until 2008. I never looked at the copyright date until now.

If you want a book printed in 2008, I will vote for YES WE CAN, which is a photographic book about Obama's campaign.

Why do so many of our boardmembers believe that the Bible was released in 2008? Surely you must all know that it is a little older than that?
I'm assuming it means the book that we read that had the strongest impact on us for 2008. I bought a Bible in October with my birthday money and it has been the book which meant the most to me this year. Sorry if you don't agree. I read 2 Ken Follett books this year that also impacted me but they weren't published this year. They were Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

The Bible is one of those books that, when you discover it's value, it will always be 'the book of the year.'I also believe that it's the #1 best selling book of the year, every year so it deserves the recognition some of us give it.

all this talk of the bible is making me want to comment but I wont because I respect people who have religious faith and so on but I have my issues with the whole concept... I also always thought those categories defined that the release was this year otherwise it seems pointless. Its like when the grammy's have let something win which was released the year before. It makes no sense

Exactly, Dani. I will also refrain from further comment, but I think next year it should be made clear that those categories are from books, movies, etc. released in 2009.

Why is it that people always find something to b*tch about with these awards?? Seriously! It's supposed to be fun guys - do you remember what that is, or are you all caught up in the little soap operas you've created out of this board?

Some of you use these awards to mouth off about others, some as a soap box for controversial issues - that's not the spirit in which Andy intended them. Fine, call them an ass-kissing contest, but not on the actual thread OK?? Be NICE about it.

You watch it - someone will call me on censorship and freedom of speech next. Sheesh.
I don't believe in Bondi. I don't believe in rugby league. I believe in Yoko, John Lennon, the Lost Weekend and me.

Would you like to show me where else I've had a go at this issue? You won't find any evidence, because until now I've kept my mouth shut. I'm tired of the petty little squabbles and whispering campaigns.

I've personally got much much bigger fish to fry.

I'm not 'having a pop' at anyone in particular, Peter. It just seems to me that people will have a go at anything lately, and if there isn't an existing problem to b*tch about, they'll create one.

I purchased the Audacity of Hope this year, so I didn't read it until 2008. I never looked at the copyright date until now.

If you want a book printed in 2008, I will vote for YES WE CAN, which is a photographic book about Obama's campaign.
My 'book of the year' translation also has a copyright date of 2006 and I, too read it this year. It's all good.
