I thought 3rd world was a Cold Ward term not in use aymore because there isn't a 2nd world.

It may have been first coined during the cold war and it may even be close to an 'un-PC' term these days, but the phrase is most definitely in common useage still. I read it in the newspapers and online frequently. More's the pity.
