A John Lennon tribute concert will be held in Central Park

A free tribute gig to John Lennon will take place in New York's Central Park next month.

For The Love Of Lennon, organised by New Arts NYC, will commemorate the life of the music legend on December 7, the eve of the 28th anniversary of his tragic assassination.

The two-hour-long concert at the Central Park Bandshell will be led by professional musicians, encouraging fans to sing along to their favourite Beatles songs and pay homage to the icon.

"It's about doing something out of love for this city, and in honour of a profound artist and New Yorker who continues to touch the hearts, minds and ears of millions," says the concert's producer Michael Dustin Youree.

"It's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait. Perhaps Lennon himself said it best, "Come together right now, over me."

For years, devoted fans have gathered annually in the park to celebrate John's life and music, near the Dakota, where the singer lived with wife Yoko Ono and the location of his assassination by Mark David Chapman on December 8 1980.

What's the point?
I think they should wait until the 50th anniversary. 28th just sounds tacky!
Still i ain't gonna get too priecious about a dead rock star, even one i love!

Please forgive my ignorance but what does priecious mean? If it is anything close to being torn up about his death than I am happy for you. I am a Paul fan but John's death hits me real hard. I go to all of the celebrations of his that we have in Hollywood. Hell, I even help clean his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But if his death doesn't affect you than good for you.

In my view, any celebration of his life is warranted at any time, not just on big anniversaries.

Amen Cathy my stista friend!!! If at all possible I will try to be there. It will be a stretch but I`m keeping my thoughts positive it will work out.

In the meantime I don`t need this on my personal parade. :badmood:

John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

Betsy, that would be wonderful if you can make it - my Charmin Sista!!

Don't forget tho, that there are some people that love an artist but their death just doesn't have the same impact on them as it would others. Don't let it rain on your parade.

I dunno. Most of these shows end up being so lame. Just because someone is a fan of John doesn't mean they have to jump at everything that is allegedly done in his honour.

So what's it going to be? Axl Rose doing Dear Prudence? Lenny Kravitz doing Instant Karma? The gang from Idol butchering Imagine? No thanks!

This is the bit that really made me wonder:

I have to agree. Where's the good sense? I feel closer to John when I listen to his music. His soul is there.

The last time Yoko organized a concert in John's name was for 9/11. I believe it was called "Come Together" but not sure. I watched it but it left a lot to be desired. I believe it has now, or is about to be, come out on dvd. It was only so-so at best. The only performer I remember was Cyndi Lauper.

Just found a link to it: http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/news/1015cometogether.html

I was not impressed with it when I saw it shortly after 9/11.

The Concert for George was spectacular.

I celebrate the music of both John and George on their birthdays and on the anniversary of their passings. Both of their deaths hit me hard. These four guys from Liverpool have been my idols since 1964.

Come on everyone, is it about the music or the celebration of his life? If being there and participating in the show makes people feel good then I say do it. It's the same as leaving flowers on the Imagine Circle or his star on Hollywood Blvd, they will only get shriveled up and trampled on but it makes the donor feel good and let's them show their love and respect for John. I hope everyone that goes enjoys themselves and comes away from the experience enriched.

If I lived in New York and was free that day, I would probably go. I like hearing cover versions of John's songs. Plus, December 8 is also my birthday.

These things are only really worth while when the performers were friends or collaboratots with the person being paid tribute too, the Georgew Harrison one for intance. If it's Elton John, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Paul McCartney etc it'd be great. There was one for John before which had the likes of Randy Travers, Joe Cocker and Kylie Monouge for some reason.

I disagree, Mark. They are always worthwhile no matter who is performing or doing things. It is always great to be there with other fans who are there for the same purpose as you are. It is wonderful to sing along with them and listen to their heartfelt words of love. It helps with the healing of our loss. Dec. 8th will always be a day of mourning for me, a day of sorrow and solace. It really helps to get together with others who are going through the same as I am and hear their stories, hear their songs.
