I was just curious to see if Andy was going to be doing the SF Awards thing this year.
Can't really remember when that happens, but its getting closer to December. :)

I wasn't sure whether people would want to do them this year or not, to be honest. I'm happy to 'run' them again, but - of course - only if enough people want it to happen.

Use this thread as a sounding board for ideas and if there is anyone out there who hasn't experienced the annual SF awards before, the threads are out there somewhere... :P
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
I have always thought they were great fun. It`s a pretty awesome thing for Andy to do for us as it involves a great deal of work.

If he does decide to do it (hopefully everyone will) remember the spirit of fun to be had by all that goes with it. Would be ashamed for Andy to get slagged this year.

The roast idea sounds great :peace:
You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand
John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

At the risk of losing my Ms Popularity award, I think it's bad enough when large organisations give themselves awards but it just looks needy when a group of 30 do it.

What first attracted me to this site was how inclusive it is. This seemed like a place where a very wide range of people could feel welcome. Something like this only serves to divide people. You're officially saying these few are the popular people.

When I first heard of this I thought it was poor form, but some people convinced me that it was all in fun. However, I found that many people do take it very seriously and I was dismayed by the ill will that was the result.

Those people take themselves way too seriously. I remember only one person last year who got crazy upset. They take it like it's the Academy Awards, which it is not.

It's all for fun. We did this on pm.com and nobody got upset there.

I just don't see why there has to be a poll yet again. Just do it.

The reason why people take it seriously is because they feel left out because it seems a lot of people have met each other here and they feel excluded out of the fun. They feel like people form cliques and don't want "newbies" to join in. I've felt that way in the past, but I think the Awards are just for fun. I love seeing the "pomp and circumstance" of everything. *lol* I'm voting yes.
And for those who take this too seriously, RELAX and have fun. :)

yes to the awards. We have them every year, as we have the "should we have the awards" discussion. And every time, most people enjoy them and a couple of them hate them, for the exact same reasons, and then there's the argument, and then the poll, and then the argument continues, and then my brain explodes and I die. It's almost the SF cliché.

As for asking the question of whether we should have the awards, we just want to fulfil the wishes of the majority of the members, that's all. No point in doing something that most regular posters don't want.

The 'yes' vote is overwhelmingly winning at the moment, so it looks as if they're going to go ahead.

I really like the third choice in the poll. My instinct is to say this isn't right but now I've got a better option.

There are a lot of people here with low self-esteem. I don't think they'll feel any better about themselves when told they're not the prettiest, smartest or funniest. Some people spend time online because they feel alienated offline. Not winning yet again will only alienate them more. But I hope the popular people enjoy their pat on the back. I hope this turns out to be far less divisive than I think it is. But if this debate happens every year then I'm not the only one. Imagine that.

I never wanted to win any popularity contests around here. Until now I didn't know that was an option. I also don't want to tell anybody what to do. I like democracy. If people want to do this I hope they have fun. But I feel this is inappropriate and I choose not to participate. If anybody wants to nominate me for homecoming queen, please don't. I rejected that palaver when I was in school and I reject it even more as an adult.

I really like the third choice in the poll. My instinct is to say this isn't right but now I've got a better option.

There are a lot of people here with low self-esteem. I don't think they'll feel any better about themselves when told they're not the prettiest, smartest or funniest. Cool! Way I see it you afraid that someone might conclude you in any catorgy. Yes, you could go for funniest or who can be more like Lissa. Insecure to like to have fun. I think you are dreaming. Do not worried we think about you everyday on this board

who cares? it's a group of friends that compliment (insult  ) each other. a lot of these people are friends in real life, talk on the phone, meet, have sex, etc. etc. it shouldn't be a surprise that they know each other better than some of us that only come here occassionally. i like hearing the results as it opens a lil door more for what people really think of each other. it's really no biggie!

The awards are conducted in the spirit of having fun. Simple as that. I understand that some may not like the concept of "awards" in general, but I think that anyone with an issue about them just shouldn't participate in them or threads that have to do with them. Mainly because it looks as though we will have them, thanks to Andy's goodwill and the majority opinion of this board, and also if you feel that way, why not spare yourself the distress? I recognize that there is lots of work involved and I am grateful to Andy for providing us with his usual good-spirited humor.

And I am looking forward to the after-party. I hope that if Elton doesn't show, maybe we might see Barry M. or maybe Tom J.? :D

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
The 'awards' are for a laugh. They really shouldn't be taken seriously. That's what is fun about it. I'm not sure why some people feel threatened by something that is meant to be silly and give you a chuckle or two.
They don't mean anything. There really isn't any 'award' that you can put up on your mantle and stare at with joy. It's just goofing around and having a bit of a laugh.
Lisa is right...stay away from this thread, and any other that will make you feel insecure and awful about yourself. But hey, stay away from anything that will do that to you, no matter what it is.

Well, the poll was conclusive - they're going ahead.

They should be coming to a computer screen near you (very near you if you're reading this) on or just after December 1st, 2008. ^_^

I don't live in Paris, but I am admired by penguins everywhere.

And thank you, Andy, for doing this once again.

No problem - it may take me a day or two from today to get them up and running. I'm back from California, slightly jetlagged and off to work, so they'll be up and posted when I have a spare hour or so.

Linda, sorry we couldn't find the time for a chat when we were in the US, by the way, we only had just less than a week and it was a very full one. Maybe next time - or, of course, we could just give you a call from here! :)

I, too, was nominated for Senior Homecoming queen way back in 1971 and declined...I've grown up since and I say let's have some fun!

OK, steady on... :P

Although that category may sound fun, it may be much more trouble than it is worth and not everyone would appreciate being named or nominated. It could lead to people feeling embarrassed, uncomfortable or even harassed. It could also lead to people feeling upset that people don't want to see them naked! It is, therefore, my suggestion that we shouldn't pursue that particular line of thought. :)

So what kind of awards have been given in the past? I think some people would really feel left out if they weren't nominated or given an award. I do think it could be fun though, if people don't take it too seriously.

I don't care if you guys hold them...I've been rather quiet lately, what with school and all, so I'm not really sure what I could possibly be nominated for (Biggest Dylan Fan? Best Blogger?).
Plus, since so many people like them, why can't we have them?
