Oprah had a promo for it on her show today and she was thrilled about it. I really want to see it but they say it won't be out my way until Sept. 21. I know it's in Chicago this weekend, though. Looks like an amazing show and Paul even liked it! http://www2.oprah.com/tows/slide/200709/20...?promocode=HP14 |

All the reviews I have read so far have been pretty bad. The summary of at least three critiques suggest that it is a film with a loose, tenuous and contrived plot not worthy of The Beatles' music. I have to admit that I was fairly interested in seeing this film before, but less so now. :hmm: |

Don't think any Beatles fan should listen to the critics that panned the film, although Roger Edbert wrote a glowing review. I saw the movie with a crowd of about 100 people at a screening and the response was wonderful. It is an artsy kind of film and quite enjoyable. It's also a really good date movie so if you and your significant other are Beatles fans, go see the movie!!

ACCROSS THE UNIVERSE REVIEW!!! OK EVERYONE...THIS IS A MUST SEE movie for ANY Beatle fan. Never have I felt transported into an era like I was in this film. Ignore the critics reviews, it's artsy, a good story, and the soundtrack is a GREAT tribute to the writing skills of the Beatles. In fact, it makes you realsie just how GOOD the songs are technically. Neither of us can enthuse enough about this - it's emotional, it's psychadelic, and it even passes a nodding wink to Mystery Tour. FANTASTIC cameos by Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard and Bono, it really is a special film. Anyone messing with the Beatles history and music, risks criticism, but this is DEFINITELY done with love. It's one of the VERY few movies I could watch again immediately, and urge you ALL to see it if you can. It's absolutely fantastic...really fantastic. Val & I cannot praise this highly enough. GO SEE IT!!!

I totally love it when people criticize a movie without seeing it. They look at the trailer and judge it off of it, or they read a critic's opinion of it. Most critics I think are very biased and don't really care. I go with my instinct. If I think a trailer for a movie lookds good, I'm going to go see it. I really don't read or listen to critics. If I did that I wouldn't like Xanadu. |

Totally agree. Like meeting a new person - ignore what you've heard, and judge the book by what's inside, and not the cover. You'll either love it or hate it. It seemes to be a movie that polarises people - there seems no middle ground, and that's always a good thing. Personally, I love it. |

It didn't receive a wonderful review in the paper this morning, but I went there anyway. I'm afraid that it was so bad that I left after 1 hour 15 minutes. I found it quite boring and I did not like the music. It was a waste of money, IMO. There were maybe 15-20 people in the theater and two couples and one man left before I did if that says anything about it. |

I seem to remember the Beatles themselves were given scathing reviews when Mystery Tour came out, and now it's viewed as a work of art. Each to there own though, we're all entitled to our opinion. For what it's worth, the theatre was almost full the twice we saw it, and a round of applause broke out at the end of our second viewing. People are different, and have differing opinions, so long as we all respect that. |

WOW...thats too bad you did not like the music!!! I"ve always loved Beatles music myself!!! Kidding....BUT...I"m curious..what did you not like about the music and film? THe singers? THe musical arrangements? DId you really find the movie boring? WhaT age group are you in...maybe it has something to do with that? I'm only curious because I found the movie and the music enchanting!!! And as Mr Bellamy said ...... we went to 2 viewings last week and the theaters where full....as far as i know no one walked out, it was dark and I was to into the movie to pay attention if anyone was leaving and not coming back....LOL...and the last viewing there really was a great applaud at the end. I wonder if location has something to do with it....we are in Florida....so far...everyone who has seen it 'here' has loved it...... ALright ...... sorry you did not like it!!!!

Sing the Changes
|
I'm a first generation fan located in Colorado. The man who walked out was around my age. The two couples were much younger. The man walked out after the silly scene with the cheerleader singing I Want To Hold Your Hand. I love Beatles music, but I like it performed by the Beatles. I never did figure out a story line. If I had seen a story line, I might have stayed. I didn't like the way the music was performed at all. I left right after Dear Prudence. They totally ruined that song. The part where Sadie asks where did she come from and Jude answers "she came in through the bathroom window" was so predictable, most of the audience had shouted it out before he answered. I wasted $7 on the movie and $3.50 on the soft drink. |

I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I did For the most part I like the soundtrack....some of the arrangements sound great to me. I think the movie was too predictable....the line about 'the bathroom window' was almost painful. Much of the imagery was very cool, but the story line just didn't grab me. |

I saw this film with my husband today and, like Val and Mr Bellamy, WE LOVED IT! To me, it felt like a combination of HAIR, Tommy, and Moulin Rouge. I love musicals and films about the 1960s, so Across the Universe was like the best of both worlds. Everything was shot on location, and looked amazing. I found myself completely lost in the story. I really enjoyed the actors (especially "Jude"). I thought they were all excellent singers, too. It was cool to hear all of those familiar songs in a completely new context. It made me realize what great storytellers the Beatles were. (By the way, the theater was about 2/3 full, and no one walked out during the film). |

Gary and I chuckled at that line also....but I think it was supposed to be contrived... I guess the story line was loose but basically Jude and Lucy falling in love during the late 60's turbulance of America.... THe scenes coupled with the music just BLEW me away....I REALLY can't wait to see LOVE now.... |

LOVE is nothing like this movie. You get real Beatles music that sounds fantastic. There is absolutely no comparing LOVE to Across the Universe. LOVE is a work of art. I didn't find Across the Universe to be a work of art. I did like the Thanksgiving dinner scene, although it was predictable too. Guess that was my biggest problem with the movie--it was too predictable for me. To each their own, right? |

No, The movie can not be compared with LOVE - totally agree on that, but did VAL ever compare it? I think she simply said she can't wait to SEE LOVE. BUT.....it is a MUSICAL...it is SUPPOSED to be contrived...most musicals are...Mystery Tour also had hardly any plot... Once people get the fact it's MEANT to be corny, and MEANT to be loose, then you can free your mind and enjoy the music and the images. Yes...to each his own...we're all different animals, I just feel people should approach this film with an open mind, instead of pre conceived bias. It wouldn't do for us all to be the same. One thing I have noticed, the film is either loved or hated - there's no middle ground. |

IF my friend doesn't flake on me again, I will see it tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I will like it. If it's good enough for Paul, then it's good enough for me. Seriously, I can take it and appreciate the idea behind it and I love the fact that movies like this keep the whole Beatle movement alive! I think it gives those who go and see it an appreciation for the music we fans already love. I already appreciate Evan Rachel Wood's acting so I know she will be good. I will let you know what I think. |

Julie Tamar's work is very odd. She did Frida and Titus. You either like her stuff or not. I think she's a very talented director that likes to take risks. I saw an interview with her on Charlie Rose on PBS a couple nights ago, and they showed a scene with Bono as Dr. Robert doing "I Am the Walrus," and I'm so wanting to see this. I think this is going to be kind of like Sgt Pepper's but a lot better. (Even though, I did like Sgt Pepper's, don't ask me why.) |

The Los Angeles Times is calling this film a "cult sensation." Apparently, teens are seeing it over and over. Here's a link to the article: LA Times. I'll quote it here as well, in case they change the link:
When I saw the film, I was next to three young girls who were quietly singing along. The girl next me was even drumming on her legs as she watched! I guess those songs are "addicting".

Thanks for posting that article, Lisa. I have to admit that equating a film based around Beatles songs with High School Musical made me shudder, though.

Has anyone seen this movie? I did just the other night...I LOVED it! It was really ingenious the way they took the Beatles music and made a story around it. The characters are all from their songs; the imagery is beautiful. There are many, many innuendos that only Beatles fans will "get." I highy recommend it; a splendid time is guaranteed for all!
(Andy, I don't know if there is already a thread on this; if so please add my post to it) I'd like to add to this that my 18 yr old son went to see this because he thought the trailer looked interesting. He was surprised that he somehow knew most of the songs (amazing, huh? couldn't be that his mom listened to the Beatles as he was growing up  ). He and his other college friends really enjoyed it. I think it is definitely an artsy, fun movie. It can't be compared to "Love" because it's just different! The movie is a little too long, and corny in it's own way. But overall, I just smiled thru most of it and enjoyed the freshness of hearing music I love mixed with compelling and beautiful images!

Glad you enjoyed it!! This movie is REALLY taking off now, and I am SO glad it's introducing Beatle music to a new generation. When Val & I saw the movie, there was a LOT of pretty young people enjoying thereselves, and it's proof positive that Beatle music is timeless, and transcends all generations. I'm thrilled at the film's increasing sucess. |

I just got back from seeing it and I LOVED it!!! I thought the vocals were incredible and the story line was good. To me, it was a cross between Magical Mystery Tour and a political movie from the 60's. The main stars did a great job. I loved how they intertwined Liverpool and New York together and brought in so many little hidden parts of the Beatle story. The scene in the Cavern was cool and the rooftop scence made me cry. I'm assuming Sadie was supposed to be a Janis Joplin character and her guitar player/boyfriend a Jimi Henrix? I have to say that I loved watching a movie that has all my favorite music in it. Rather than sit and listen to music that means nothing to me during a typical movie, I had the pleasure of listening to 2 hours of beautifully done Beatle music. It doesn't get much better than that!!! |

A friend mentioned to me that Across the Universe was intentionally brought in under the radar. It was first introduced in only a few select theaters, then released the next week in a bit broader area, then a general release the following week. That seemed to be true here in Pennsylvania but I don’t know about other places. I initially saw the movie during that first week and have since seen it a second time. I absolutely loved it!! In fact, I would have to say it has become one of my all time favorites. I enjoyed all the music…no it wasn’t the Beatles singing, but it was fun to hear the songs especially as they were used with humor. I Want You (She’s So Heavy) with the draft and the Statue of Liberty was great! I laughed at all the innuendos. Strawberry/Apple….the bus psychedelic ‘trip,’ just to name a few, were funny. IMO, the movie was a lot of fun….tongue in cheek but with a clever wit as well….capturing the soul of the sixties in Beatles language, if you will, and expressing it in a present day medium.

I put my long, song-by-song review in the general Beatles section and it was allowed to stay there because I reviewed it song by song. You can also vote in the poll there as to how you rate the movie. But for those who haven't seen that, I will give my short version and general impression of the movie here. I did not love it, but liked it a lot. What I liked about it: The main actress has a very good voice as well as being a good actress, and I really liked all of her songs and scenes. I thought the arrangements of the music were at times brilliant, as were some of the music video segments (Walrus, SFF, Mr. Kite, Lucy, etc.) The main actor who played her boyfriend in the movie is also very good at singing and acting. The other main characters were not as good, but okay. Joe Cocker does a bang up job with Come Together and I liked the Mr. Kite performance by Eddie Izzard although as a song it isn't quite as good. Seeing him do it is part of the charm of it. I loved the Let It Be scene and singing. And I loved the While My Guitar performance as well as most of the ones by the main characters. Both the acting and singing were very good, in general, and I generally can't stand musicals so for me to have liked it is saying something. What I didn't like about it: Dana Fuchs. I know I"m in the minority, here, but I did not like ANY of her songs and while she has a strong voice and "can sing", I did not care for her voice nor the arrangements of her songs, and felt like the whole movie would have been better without her scenes or her songs! (Again, I know most disagree with me, but I have to call 'em as I sees 'em.) The psychedelic scenes, while I liked them a lot, as individual scenes they seemed superfluous to the movie, to the story. The movie is already over-long, and these scenes should have been cut and put in the DVD Bonus Features area only. I say that even though I did like the I Am The Walrus and Mr. Kite scenes. But the Flying and Blue Jay Way scenes could have been deleted, and it would have made a better MOVIE had the Walrus and Mr. Kite scenes been cut, as well. Also, some of the scenes in the very beginning of the movie were over-long and could have been edited down to a shorter sequence. Here I speak of Hold Me Tight, All My Loving, I Want To Hold Your Hand, and With A Little Help. Good scenes, but overly long and the beginning of the movie was too slow. Thus, editing these scenes down just a little would have made a better movie. So, the bottom line is, I thought the movie was overly long and slow in parts but in spite of this I liked it quite a bit. When it worked, it really worked well and the bottom line is, it is worth seeing. In fact, I will probably buy the dvd! I just think it could have been much better! I have the Deluxe edition of the music, and I have edited out Dana Fuchs and made one cd out of the 2 cd's, leaving out the weaker tracks, and I like it pretty well that way. This is a movie that some will love and some will hate. You cannot know until you see it. So go see it! |

I was going to write my own review, but you pretty much have already done that for me. I have to agree with you on just about every account. I wanted to like it more, but I just didn't. Some very good scenes and arrangement as you mentioned, but just not enough of them and it was too long for what it was. Like yourself, I did like the Mr. Kite scene and also the weird soldiers scene. I also liked the part with the statue of liberty. When the actress was singing I Wanna Hold Your Hand, I wanted to scream. It was painful to watch and listen to, for some reason. I lived through this era and it was just a bit superficial for me and not nearly meaty enough for what it could have been. A good effort, but not excellent. For the most part, I really liked the songs, the musical interpretation and the two main actors. Oh, and I did not like Dear Prudence or Blackbird - sorry, this was the ultimate in cheesy and not in a good whey

I not only lived those times but lived in that same area of NYC at that time. I thought the movie did a great job touching on some actual incidents that happened (and some I was a part of) without getting too preachy behind them. Ditto for the places they portrayed except that the real interior of the Fillmore East was much bigger and more of an auditorium than the club setting they gave it. I LOVED the movie and I'm looking forward to buying it on DVD. |
