The last word; Are you guilty?

Just curious if any of you find yourself avoiding posting with certain people, because you know they just have to get in the last word.

It's one thing to exchange ideas or opinions, but another thing entirely, in my opinion, if one of the posting parties is more concerned about appearing as the *authority* or the most clever person in the room. Throw in a dose of condescencion and sprinkle in more than a little sarcasm or outright derision and that's a recipe for a real sh*t sandwich. :pinch:

An air of superiority surely stinks up the room. ^_^

Not so much here, but it is a drag when that happens. I avoid having convesations with those that constantly over-state their opinions.

I was married to someone like that so I learned early on to "let it be" or just make sure I had the best word if I couldn't have the last word :P

I have learned to do it more after being married to a 'last word' man. I used to just let it go with him and now I don't unless it's a trivial matter. Then I let it go.

That's why I love you

Yes Bev, people always do it, here, at the bar, at school, at home. We, humans, need affirmation and when some people know a little about a subject they think they must have the last word. It doesn't mean these people are bad.

Exactly. For all the years I've been online I'm still surprised how threatened people are by a different point of view and how many people think somebody's a bad person/stupid/crazy for having a different opinion.

If somebody has the last word the conversation's over.
If you read my posts backward there's evidence that Paul is dead.

Interesting replies.

At least some of you admit to it, while others refuse to look in the mirror and see what others see. :ponder: Differing opinions are always welcome; condescension, smugness and snarky remarks never are.

And Michelle, I agree that these people aren't necessarily 'bad'. (It's the behavior and attitude I take exception to.) I was just curious whether they can see themselves as others may see them. :ponder:

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
I used to be a person who was very much into the 'last word'. I guess if I am passionate about the topic of conversation, I still might be. But for the most part, I sit back and watch other people have the war of last words. It's sometimes fascinating and almost always amusing. B)

That road travels in both directions. People rarely see in themselves the negative they see in others.

I suppose I've been guilty of this from time to time. However, if people are repeating themselves, nobody's opinion is changing or being explained further and it ceases to be an actual discussion, then I generally lose interest in whatever is being said.

I think you can usually tell who is taking part in a conversation to discuss and who is interested in point scoring... they aren't necessarily the same people in every discussion, though. :P
