Is it legal or illegal for civilians to own guns where you live? Should it be? Is there more crime with guns or without? Is it an inalienable right? Should people only be allowed certain types of weapons? |

I am against guns and if the state can't protect civilians there's something wrong and a gun won't protect anyone. |

we are not a very weapon-carrying nation, the idea is quite alien to most of us I think. People in villages or in huge farms might own weapons, but it is quite unheard of in the cities. I can't imagine what it's like to live in such fear that you feel like you need a gun to protect yourself. I don't believe in guns and I agree with Michelle. |

I live in the grand ol' U.S. of A, where the right to bear arms is strongly upheld by our constitution mainly as a measure to insure that "we the people" can overthrow a bad government. However, Gone are the days when guns could feasibly protect the populous from an errant government. Let's face it, the government has nukes. If they really wanted us to be able to overthrow a corrupt government I think they'd have to arm us with nukes too. So logically, the main argument for maintaining the right to bare arms is, essentially, defunct. Statistically and from what I've seen in my close to two decades here in the U.S., gun ownership results in more innocent death than anything else. Households with guns more often inflict damage on themselves than on malicious intruders. That being said, my thoughts aren't quite ossified in support of a gun ban. I'm certain that criminals could still access them through black markets, and then they'd have guns and no one else would, not sure if that's a great plan. I think the best thing would not be a complete revocation of our right to bear arms, but much more intense requirements in order to gain gun ownership. It should be nearly impossible. |

Just curious. Why do you want to take away the right to bear arms? I'm not all that into guns but if one talks about taking away any of my rights, I get rather defensive. |

I know what you mean, I'm not a fan of relinquishing rights either. But statistically, guns cause more harm than good. I don't think they should be banned all together, but I think only people who have proven themselves to be extremely responsible should have them. I also think that households with children shouldn't be allowed to have guns, my brother nearly got into trouble playing with a gun his friend was showing him from under his dad's bed. Luckily it wasn't loaded. That isn't always the case. |

Of course, "Arms" meant something slightly different two centuries ago. Were the founding fathers really talking about teenagers having the right to carry Uzis around shopping strips?

In Paul's Arms!
|
I AM for no guns at all. I hate them! I have seen nothing but bad come from them. A good man, and one that I had a crush on, was accidentally killed by a good friend of his when his gun discharged by accident. When that amendment was put into the US constitution it was so that the militia could have a chance to have a gun to protect the country but now just about anybody has access to them. I live in a state where the gun laws are pretty strict but people are stupid enough to want a gun that badly that they will circumnavigate around the law to get them. I'm sorry, I have been anti-guns since I was a young child and that has never wavered. |

Is that true? And if it is, why? In other countries that's not true at all. So are Americans recklessly irresponsible? |

What's wrong with a few shotguns and hunting rifles for fun and protection? |

What's right with it? Guns are killing machines. There isn't anything you can do with them apart from kill things - that's their one function. If you want to play and have fun aiming and shooting at things, there's these little things called XBoxes, Nintendo Wiis and Playstation 3's. |

In the UK, you can apply for a license with strict pre-conditions to own rifles/shotguns, but they are only likely to be granted if you have a good reason for owning one - i.e. if you are a farmer or if you shoot for 'sport' (personally, I don't think that's a good enough reason, but that's just me). If granted a license, you must also keep your registered guns in a safe manner and, when not in use, locked away. Handguns are banned, apart from for the police force. Of course, gun violence still happens, but it hasn't been allowed to dominate the streets and it is a number one priority of our police force to rid the country of illegal weapons. Quite honestly, I strongly believe that the illegality of handguns and the fact that a gun license is fairly difficult to get hold is why firearm crimes in this country is fairly low, per capita. One of the worst things about America is their right to bear arms. I believe that gun ownership should be a privilege, not a right, and that a good reason must be sought and evidenced before granting any individual a license. Violence begats violence. |

If I had my druthers, all guns would be banned. I've seen the pain of a friend watching their child die when the hunting rifle accidently went off. Nothing good comes from guns. |

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
|
I hate guns. It's too easy to get guns, here. It's too easy to just shoot someone you get mad at...or who is in your way. I think handguns should be banned. I think penalties for people who misuse and kill someone with guns should be extreme. I hate guns. |
