Never have never will. Although it's interesting, for all the negative publicity smoking gets, the vast majority of my friends smoke at least occasionally when they drink. It's definitely still a part of collage drinking culture.

Out of curiosity, do you think smoking should be banned and those who do smoke should be enrolled in programs in order to quit, or do you see banning smoking as a violation of personal freedom? It was recently banned on my college's campus, and the issue has stimulated quite a lot of debate.

In my own opinion, I think smoking bans are largely unpractical and essentially unenforceable. I think smoking will eventually die out on it's own, or be limited to binge drinking situations as mentioned above. Also, when people feel that their freedoms are challenged, they may hold on to bad habits such as smoking all the more tightly in the symbolic "expression of freedom" sense, which I see as one of the motivations for the illegal use of marijuana.

I don't smoke. But I believe those who wish to should be allowed to, as long as:

1) I'm not bothered by it (second-hand smoke) and

2) I wouldn't be responsible down the line for paying for his medical bills as a result.

i agree with otlset. i think we are too hard and prejudiced against smokers. i would not like if someone condemned me constantly coz i love Hershey's or OD on chocolate. true, it doesn't effect the people around me but i guess i'm a lil partial coz my mom smoked all her life and i always saw her being separated and scorned at...i felt sad for her. she was a good woman and it was her choice. i used to say, "leave her alone, she can do what she wants." i never liked smoking but it didn't effect the way i felt towards a particular person. on the other hand, when i drank alcohol occassionally i might light up. and the last two years i have off and on but perhaps 2 or 3 cigs a day (pack a week) and not as a social smoker (but in the bathroom  ) then i'd stop for months at a time.

anyway, this was not a "what's your opinion" survey but a straight yes or no answer. (to me, the discussion of cigarettes goes along with religion and politics coz no one ever wins the discussion...and it can harbor hostile thoughts...)

I quit about 6 yrs. ago when i was in jail because i kept getting stressed out about other inmates pestering me for tobacco, basically i was intimidated. So i had a major incentive to quit. I still hanker after them every now and again. Mainly when i'm a bit drunk and get reminded of it, like now. But i smoke marijuana whenever i can.

but that's what makes life interesting!!! "Opinions" lead to discussion which leads to better understanding - if people are open minded. Yes or no answers, well they're essentially useless unless analyzed in a contextual sense. Forgive me for wanting to make this topic worthwhile.
