Paul's Most Underrated Songs
Topic Started: Aug 20 2008, 08:05 AM (626 Views)
Hey Jude

Which, to you, are Paul's most underrated songs? That is, songs which - to you - are absolutely brilliant but hardly get any recognition from fellow fans or the general public.

My first pick is The Lovers That Never Were, from Off The Ground. I think that's an incredible song both lyrically and musically. I especially love the line, "Say goodbye - or anything!"

The second song I'd like to highlight is The Note You Never Wrote from Wings At The Speed Of Sound. Although I always wish that Paul would have sung that dramatic one, I love the song dearly and particularly like the moment where the bass introduces itself.

My last choice (for now) is The Other Me. OK, I can almost hear some of you laughing from here. Yes, the 'dustbin lid' line wasn't the best, but I think the song itself really touches on something special, about regret and wanting to be the best possible person you can be, but never quite managing it. Plus, I think it's a catchy song - and I really like the 'sigh'.

That's it from me - how about you?

Last night I was humming "Oh Lazy Dynamite" of Wings at the Speed of Sound. I think "We Got Married" was a great song and tribute to Linda, I presume.

Interesting ones, Kirsten - you really like The Lovely Linda? I mean, I think it's a lovely little song but never saw it as much more than a little ditty. Martha My Dear is a great choice though - although fondly regarded by many Beatles fans, it's not really one which non-Beatles fans know about or one that makes fans' 'favourite' lists too often.

Great and interesting choices!

As I said in the other thread "Keep Comming Back To Love" is a true underrated song, as are all the other B-sides from Off the Ground, like "Long Leather Coat" and "I Can't Imagine".

I think we can all agree that "Little Lamb Dragonfly" is far too awesome to be ignored.

"Beware My Love" is criminally underrated. It's just a great rocker that should be performed by Paul constantly.

"One Of These Days" is so beautiful...it's just one of the many reasons why I love McCartney II. It's like "Dark Eyes", the acoustic song that ends Dylan's over-produced 1985 Empire Burlesque. The song is so contrary to everything else on the album that it seems like it comes out of nowhere to end the album in such an undersatated way that it provides a punch you won't soon forget.
Visit my blog of album reviews and anything else I can think to put on it here!

I will just list a few that I like that I don't think have gotten much attention or radio play.

"That Would Be Something" - McCartney

Q: "I guess you've heard Paul's album."

George: "Yeah."

Q: "What did you think?"

George: "'That Would Be Something' and 'Maybe I'm Amazed' I think are great. and everything else I think is fair, you know - is quite good - but umm, a little disappointing. But I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't be disappointed, maybe... It's best not to expect anything and then everything's bonus, you know. I think those two tracks in particular are really very good. and the others, I mean, just don't do much for me. Because I can hear other people play better drums and guitars and things. and the arrangements of some of these songs like... 'Teddy Boy,' and 'Junk,' and stuff - with a little bit more arrangement they could've sounded better. I suppose it was the only thing he felt he could do at the time, you know, and he started off just testing his machine. Eddie Cochran did something like that, though, didn't he. 'Summertime Blues' and 'Come On Everybody' he played bass, guitar, drums."

George Harrison Interview, New York City (1970, April 25)

"Heart of the Country" - Ram

"Little Lamb Dragonfly" - Red Rose Speedway

"Mamunia" - Band on the Run

"Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People" - Venus and Mars

"Warm and Beautiful" - Wings at the Speed of Sound

"One Of These Days" - McCartney II

"Get It" - Tug of War

"We Got Married" - Flowers in the Dirt

"Somedays" - Flaming Pie

"Anyway" - Chaos and Creation in My Backyard

"Mr. Bellamy" - Memory Almost Full

I love We Got Married, great song from FITD. However the song is even better live from Tripping. McCartney live is magical.

Average Person, Footprints, and Getting Closer are underrated in my book.
