The Power of Strawberry Fields; Lets make it happen.

In another thread it was brought up that we could support one of our members in a charity race and it made me think, why should we wait for a race? Lets make Strawberry Fields something more than an internet forum, lets make it a fundraising tool. I suggest we find a charity we all can support and donate to it as a group. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society works for me but I'll throw it out for discussion.

I also suggest that if we do it we do it in memory of Lissa, who had the thought originally,

What do you think?

I think it is a great idea, Tony. I have donated last week to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of Carol. Is it time to do so to support Beverly's run? I can post a link to Carol's site, too. You all helped me so much with her illness and her kids and grandkids will be walking on September 12 in her memory.

Aimee has me thinking, not everyone can afford to make a donation. So maybe something like that movie, Pay it Forward. Once again just thinking outside the box.

I think that goes against our fundamental tenet of being a Beatles board, not a bunch of do-gooders.

Sorry Tony, just rattling your cage. :P

I think it's a beautiful idea.
I just think it would be important to make it clear that there's no obligation at all and people can give as much as they can afford to if, of course, they can afford to at all. :)

On that note, charity begins at home and it might be nice to have a bit of a fund for friends here who find themselves in hard times. Maybe that's a bit too close to home and would be embarrassing, but on the whole, I think it's an excellent idea.

Just make sure you talk about the Beatles while we're at it! ;)

Bill the idea sounds very Beatles like to me, so I proposed it. Sometimes we need more than love, we need help. The community that has sprung in this internet forum is a kind and caring one. We all want to help but don't know how to do it.

Recently two board members offered to make calls for another when she was having problems. Helping someone can be done in other ways besides money.

Other members here have done walks and runs and asked member to support them. If they are willing to get up and exercise to raise funds then why the hell not support them. When I was younger we would send out for beer. The kids who couldn't pay were the ones who went to pick it up. Working together we had a good time. We can make that happen here if we try.

Aimee may have no money but she is always offering help with computers and such. Dotty has made wonderful graphics, that talent can certainly be used for good. Linda is always offering to help people with their taxes and such. And then there is Andy who can write with a passion and spirit that many of us wish we had.

There are ways to help each other, the communities we live in, and beyond. Just need a plan to do it. Very much in the theme of what the Beatles stood for I think.

Oh, I couldn't agree more.

And what's more, we have the mistakes of Apple to learn from.

The great thing is that if we have a central place or team organising things, it helps people to give any help they can when previously they might have wanted to but missed out on for whatever reason. It's really easy to miss certain things so if we have a main thread that's all about helping each other, I think that would be brilliant!

That might be a bit difficult at least, considering we are in about a dozen different countries with different laws and such.

pood for paul

I know a little boy, his name is Grant(9 months old)-he is a Down's Syndrome baby, and 4 weeks ago they diagnosed him with Leukemia. His parents are 2 of the strongest people I have ever met.

It will be my honor to donate to this cause, not only in the name of SF, but also for my Grandson, Jackson (1 year old) who is perfectly healthy.....Thank you God, for that.

I will be waiting to hear more about this.

Thanks for the overwhelming support for this idea. I think we can do something positive.

Now we just got to decide what to do. As we are not forming a foundation or having a central person to donate I think we would just have to post what we have done. Some ideas...

Donate to your local homeless shelter. Many of them take donations of clothes as well. There may also be a local food bank too.

There are many local domestic abuse shelters as well that take clothes and household goods. Also they take old cell phones as well.

Do you suppose I could buy old broken down computers cheaply, rebuild them, and donate to charity? Like organizations who could use them, or they can sell them?

I have no experience in building them, but it sounds cool. I like doing techie stuff. Anything geeky I can do? I'm not real good with my hands, so I might end up destroying anything I build.

Since AIDS is near and dear to my heart, having lost several loving friends to AIDS, I have raised money for a particular group that also counsels and helps victims of this disease find housing (either independent or hospice care) or help keep their housing. No one gets turned away.

This is who I raise money for: PosadaAIDSWalk. As much as you feel prepared for a good deal of this walk, you still walk in tears and humility. Just watching the video on this made me think back on all the ones that I have walked. It brought tears to my eyes. It's always very moving especially when you come to the end with the living quilt. To see all the dedications and drawings (someone a couple of years ago drew angel's wing and stated under them "Sheltering those who have AIDS") makes me realize that this is my goal, to help eradicate this disease.

Hi, Tony.

I will be doing another marathon soon to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I will have a 'donations' page where contributors' names and donation amounts will appear. I will see if there is a way to add donors to a particular group.

If any of you would like to donate to LLS as a part of my fundraising campaign, I would be most appreciative.

I am going to be making armbands or some other type of wearable item that will have the names of those in whose honor (or memory) a donation has been made. I will wear them during the race and am thinking of sending them, after race day, to those people or their families.

This all becomes really personal for me. If you could be at one of these events and could meet these people and their families, you would certainly understand.

Tony, thanks for having such a big heart and for starting this thread to help others.

I don't think a foundation of our own is plausible. It takes money and time to set it up and run it. We would have to get the IRS to approve it's tax exempt status and then follow the rules to keep the tax exempt status. We would need a board to make decisions as to how to distribute the money that was raised.

Beverly, I will support you. Carol's kids have a site for the walk they are doing on September 12 and I'm guessing that is what you will be doing.

I also plan on donating to one of Lissa's favorite charities in her memory. I know suicide prevention was very important to her. Does anybody remember if it was a particular charity that she supported?

Linda, there are numerous events during the year and at many locations throughout the country that raise money for LLS. The event on the 12th is just one of many. I will be doing another marathon, most likely toward the end of this year or during the spring of next year.

If you contribute to the efforts by Carol's kids, hopefully you'll still be willing to make another contribution to my campaign. I know money is tight for most folks right now, but I feel so strongly about this charity, I'm not afraid to ask others to make a donation. -_-

I'll make an announcement here when my fundraising campaign gets underway. :)

My church gathers food, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorants, clean brushes and combs, socks, clothing, blankets, diapers, just about anything non-perishable and donates them to our local LSS (Lutheran Social Services) food pantry. I will probably gather up a lot of my mom's clothing and donate them to our food pantry. The LSS food pantry either gives these things away (if they are really needed) or sells them at a small cost to the public. Most of the people that goes there are either homeless or poor. Some are not exactly rich but obviously not in need of much help.

With the economy being so tight the local shelters, food pantries, and soup kitchens are suffering the most. Not to many people have the money or goods to donate to them and there are many more people that are in need of these kind of services. Very very sad situation.

Tony, you're so right. There are so many organizations who could use a helping pair of hands. -_-

I used to volunteer with a local group who served Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to anyone who wanted to attend. I couldn't believe how many families turned up for these events. :o

On Christmas Eve, we wrapped thousands of donated toys and when the kids showed up for the Christmas Day feast, they were each given a present that had been tagged as "age appropriate". I think this was the only gift that many of these kids received on Christmas. :(

When the feast was over, I took boxes of leftovers to the beach, where many homeless people tend to gravitate. I can't tell you how grateful these folks were to get a home-cooked hot meal. One lady even burst into tears and hugged me. Before I got there, she and the friends she was with had bought a loaf of bread and a package of bologna and that was going to be their Christmas dinner. She said "I can't believe anyone thought of us." :(

I was alone on that Christmas holiday, but I can't tell you how loved I felt at the end of the day. :)

It's amazing how much impact a small gesture can make in the lives of others. ;)

Down at a local park, North Hollywood Park in North Hollywood, CA, used to be a group of people who would cook a meal and take it to the homeless nearly everyday at lunchtime.

My mom used to cook for some disabled/elderly people. When I was younger, she always invited people who had nowhere else to go for Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas dinner.
