I can't believe nobody made a thread about this yet.

Can you believe Michael Phelps? He just shattered the world record. And what about the women's 100m freestyle? TWO people just massacred the world record. This is a really good swimming year so far. But then again, there's only been one day of it. I was also watching the gymnasts, and the women's volleyball, where the USA beat Japan 3-1. But the swimming was definitely the highlight of the day.

Australia has their first gold medal thanks to Stephanie Rice in the swimming! We also won bronze in the 4x100m relay behind the Netherlands and Germany (I think?)

Can you believe our station stopped broadcasting this afternoon for the Australian Rules football??

What did you think of the opening ceremony?

I'm waiting until track & field starts because a local athlete is participating in women's pole vault. I have been checking on NBC's official website on what's been going on. I've been watching some of the gymnastics competitions and swimming.
I missed some of the opening ceremony, but I caught it online and WOW, it gave me goosebumps.

I still have mixed emotions about these Olympic games and didn't watch the opening ceremony. I did watch a bit of the swimming last evening and saw Park Tae-hwan win the gold for Korea in the 400 meter swimming. Like many of the athletes, he has a great personal story - of overcoming asthma and then of course, his false start 4 years ago where he sort of fell into the pool and was disqualified.

I felt very happy for him.

As for the opening ceremony I think it was brilliant. Innovative, creative, beautiful, symbolic and entertaining. One of the best I think I've ever watched.

I'm rooting for everybody! They all deserve a medal in my book .

He has to win 8 in this one Olympiad to match Mark Spitz's record.

Australia got the gold (Libby Trickett) and bronze (Jessicah Schipper) in the 200m breast stroke. :boogie:

To break Mark Spitz's record you have to win 8 gold medals in ONE (1) Olympiad and not a total from past Olympiads, where Mark has won 9 gold medals in a couple of different ones. The record still stands to date of 7 gold medals in one, the 1972 - Munich, Olympiad. He wanted to watch Phelps to see if he could break the record but he was not invited to go.

Depends on the record. To break Mark Spitz's single gold winning Olympiad, it's 8 gold medals.

Ladies, I thought the record for most gold in a CAREER was 9. That was what I was saying about needing to win 10 to break the All-time record, and that is what the announcers on NBC keep saying. He has 8 in his whole career and needs 10 to break the all-time career record. Sorry for not making it clear and causing an argument.

It should've been made clearer, and thank you for that Billyshears. When you mentioned breaking Mark Spitz's record it is understood that the record is the 7 golds in one Olympiad as the 9 gold medals he shares that record with a 4 other athletes including Phelps and Carl Lewis. Mark Spitz did want to be invited to watch Phelps break his 7 gold record.

I think it is misleading to say that they "DON'T count"! Of course they count as part of the aggregate amount of medals won over the athlete's career, but they wouldn't be taken into consideration if we're talking about breaking the record for the largest number of gold medals won in one Olympiad.

That's how you could explain it, without resorting to phrases like "get it through people's heads".
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I felt pretty bad for that one girl last night in American gymnastics. Her two huge falls may have cost the US the medal. Team events must be much more stressful than individual, cause if you screw up you hurt everyone. I also thought it was a little low that the Chinese government upped the age of the girls on the Chinese team on their passports so that girls younger than the age limit could compete.

It was pretty low of them to not allow the real little girl who sang during the opening ceremonies to actually be onstage singing! Pretty damn stupid to say she wasn't pretty enough, I thought she looked pretty cute!

Grace, you are right about the age on the passports. There is no way those three girls are 16 and they all competed in bars. That might have made the difference even with the fall.

Perhaps tomorrow will be a better night for the US in individual events.

I think it is atrocious what the Chinese did about have one little girl lip sync and another girl do the actual singing. She couldn't be on television because she isn't pretty enough? That is ridiculous.

We were kinda talking about both records. But it's amazing that nobody else has over 9 medals in their career, especially Mark Spitz himself!

I hear Michael Phelps is trying to at least tie the record 8 in one Olympiad.

But, really, 11 gold in one career is really amazing as well. Especially that he did it in only two Olympiads.

I saw some of the women's gymnastics last night and was trilled to see the USA win gold and silver for the individual events. It was really thrilling watching bela Caroli (sp) watch them during the competition. They showed him going crazy and I think he kissed Bob Costes (sp) on the cheek. That moment made me cry for some reason.
Now tonight is the night we see if Michael Phelps can tie Mark Spitz's record.

My personal favorite of these Games is Dara Torres.

This is her 5th Olympiad, and she was competing for the title of 'World's Fastest Female Swimmer' -- at the age of 41!!! :o

She finished second in her race last night, by 1/100th of a second! :frustrated: :frustrated: That measurement represents something about the length of the tip of a fingernail. :o

What's amazing is that she swam last night's race in a faster time than she swam the same distance 4 years ago!!! :o :yahoo: The announcer who was interviewing her suggested to her that at this rate, she should compete again in 4 years and she would probably win the gold medal!

The reporter asked her if there was anything she would've done differently about the race and she said, "I wouldn't have filed my fingernails yesterday."

Way to go, Dara!!! You're living proof that one's age does NOT make one old!!

We have been talking about Dara at work. We admire her so much. Her workout regime is more than a full time job. I would guess the work out regime of all of the very top athletes is similar.

Some radio dj's here tried to eat what Phelps eats in a day and a roomful of them couldn't get it down in over three hours. 12,000 calories a day and he burns it all off.

Oh I wonder if Bela Carolie (sp) will go all wild tonight like he did last night when they gave the bronze medal to the female Chinese gymnast. That girl fell on her face and did a couple major errors, yet she still got a medal. I don't care if the host country, you don't give a medal to a performance like that. Bela was blaming the Australian judge for giving the Chinese the bronze medal when the US should have received it.

I believe Kuwayt has won more gold medals than any other nation.

I also believe in the inherent goodness of man.

I AM THE BIGGEST JOHN FAN!
Everything I have watched has been so exciting and fun. Also I`m feeling very nostalgic about my trip to China and want to go back again as soon as I am able.

You say you want to save humanity but it`s people that you just can`t stand
John came to me in a dream and this is what he said. "I had a vision of a man on a flaming pie, and he told me that Betsy with a B not Lisa with a L is the biggest fan of mine". John trumps 'the boss' !

I WAS ROBBED BY THAT DEVIL WOMAN

I am so happy for her. She hadn't left yet for the Olympics when I last visited my parents, but she was all over the news. Shawn, you did Des Moines and yourself proud.

I am so sad that the Olympic Games have ended, at least for another 18 months. :(

Before the Games began, I really had mixed emotions about the fact that they were going to be held in China. I now have a different perspective on things.

I'm hoping that by hosting visitors from all parts of the world, China -- the government, not the people -- will be encouraged to become a more open society and perhaps, in time, the barriers to the freedoms we take for granted will start to disappear. I never thought that I'd see the Berlin Wall come down or watch the Soviet Union disintegrate, so you just never know what changes might happen as a result of China's participation with other countries during the Games.

I was amazed at the entire production, from start to finish. I'm still at a loss for words to describe the opening ceremonies. I've never seen anything like that in my life, and I'm sure I never will again (unless I buy the DVD that NBC keeps advertising!)

Even the venues were a work of art! I'm going to miss those nightly overhead shots of the 'Bird's Nest' and the 'Cube' -- stunning pieces of architecture.

I have a few other parting thoughts to post, but I'll save them for later, after I've had time to digest the whole experience. -_-

Just another random thought . . . . :ponder: :ponder:

The next summer Games will be held in London, in 2012. Maybe there's an opportunity for another board meetup. :ponder:

Just sayin' . . . . . ;)

I agree! Now if we could just get Barb to get on a plane . . . .

It's a long swim from California to London. ;)

Maybe if we all start planning now, we can make it happen!

That's her biggest fear in life. She had a scary experience once, and she hasn't flown since.

Don't know how she's ever going to visit Liverpool and see all the Beatles' haunts if she won't get on a plane. I'm thinking maybe lots of drugs and drink might do the trick.

Airplane. I don't know how I survived. It was terrible, very uncomfortable because there was a HUUUGE man by my side and while he was sleeping, I was thinking of terrible things and I wanted to go to the restroom all the time and I didn't want to wake him up. For some unkown reason I had a coke. Why???? :duh:

Next time I will wear a diaper.
