My son downloaded something and it wiped out the entire desktop on his Vista run computer. We can't get the start menu or anything. If I do ctrl/alt/dlete I can get to the desktop folder and get into everything but I would really like the old set up back. Anyone know how to get the icons back on the desktop? THX |

What was the program? I once installed some sort of launcher on my old computre to replace the start menu and it did the same thing. Try uninstalling it. You may also need to go into registry. Or try this, it'll find all the junk files leftover: http://www.revouninstaller.com Also use the ALT+TAB trick to switch windows. Hold down the ALT key and press TAB. I use it when playing full-screen games. |

my mom keeps getting spyware on her computer. i tell her not to install so-and-so, but she goes "but it's so cool!" and installs it anyways. then she gets me to try to remove it, and calls me stupid when I can't get it out 'cos she won't let me install anything else. and she has the nerve to call herself a computer expert. i always tell her the same thing now -- just wipe the hard drive. i can't help. Well, assuming you can get the start menu (try the Windows key if you can't see it on the screen) go Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time." It will show you a list of dates you can restore the computer to. Choose a date before the problem occurred and click Next. I haven't done this much in Vista. It will probably make you jump through a couple of security hoops but it should restore you computer to how it was before the problem occurred. You will not lose any files. |

Another way to avoid the problem of "I installed something but I don't know what or how," is to have a user account for everyone who uses the computer and put them on limited accounts. Windows has two types of user account, Administrator and Limited. A Limited account has full use of the computer but cannot change any system settings. A lot of people feel they have to be the administrator all the time. This is completely unnecessary and causes a lot of problems. You only need to be the administrator when installing or removing programs, or doing something like a System Restore. Everything else can be done from a Limited account and it's the easiest way to avoid "accidental" installations and virus activity. |

well, if you can get into the main hard drive, look in Documents and Settings. (I'm not sure abotu Vista, but it works in XP.) there should be two profiles -- All Users and the main account. Unless you have more accounts click either of them, the start menu should be in there. it'll be different for each, unless you copy them all over to the same one. (I copy all my start menu folders to my main account's start menu, 'cos I'm weird like that.) Here's the path for mine, which should help you find it: C:\Documents and Settings\Aimee\Start Menu This is for XP though, so I'm not too sure. I think System Restore would be in all users. |

Thanks for all the help. I found my way to system restore but it's not helping. Let me give you a bit more detail. When I start the computer it boots up normally desktop and all but then in about 30 seconds the entire desktop disappears. A box keeps popping up saying the Windows Defender has detected Trojan/vundo virus. We don't have Windows Defender and our antivirus software says everything is fine. When I ran the system restore it says that an unexpected error occured and the restore wasn't able to complete. I tried 2 different dates and neither one worked. Everything is there and I can get to it all but it's through alley ways and back doors. Any more ideas? I'd love to fix this without my husbands help, he gets very crank when stuff like this happens. Oh and once I (we ) fix this I will set up a seperate restricted log-in for my son. Thx for that too!!Oh, if I make my son an account now do you think the desktop will appear on his? Thx |

Windows Defender comes with Windows, I think. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Did you try Safe Mode? Press F8 repetedly when you first turn on the computer, and the boot menu should come up. If you can get the name of the trojan, write it down and google it. If that doesn't work, it sounds like the best you can do is backup what you can and re-install Windows. which anti-virus you use? Norton is infamous for missing viruses. I use AVG, which is freeware. Did a virus scan and found something that I suspect could be the problem. I managed to remove it, not an easy task with a screen that keeps disappearing and I'm rerunning the scan. If it did infect the computer will just removing it solve the problem or do I have to do something more? The guy at Best Buy said he can fix it for $200. I don't want to pay that if I don't have to. Try temporarily disabling system restore, go in safe mode, load in the taskbar and virus scan until it comes back ok, Then re-enable it, and restore. Good luck. ![]() Note: Also write down the name of the virus and google it. You can find out information and other peoples ways removing it. And write it down, they have such funny names even a techie forgets them easy!! I also heard Vista wasn't very good. If I had the money to upgrade, I actually wouldn't, because I read some XP programs are incompatable with Vista and I really like my programs. And I didn't really like the Vista interface (tried demo computers at computer stores), 'though I'm not sure if you can put it back to XP-style. Edited by Aimee Wilbury, Aug 5 2008, 01:15 AM.

Sometimes, instead of supplying a disc, they make a recovery partition on the hard drive. This is often hidden and it's very difficult to know if you have one or not. Another solution that's more expensive - but less so than having to have your computer reformatted - is Norton Ghost. A recovery disc will only restore your computer to its original, out-of-the-box settings. Anything else is your lookout. Ghost can take a backup image of your entire system and restore the whole thing in one go if you ever need to reinstall. |

Oh - be careful if you're going to do that. Ghosting an old computer onto a new one is going to cause driver problems because it will bring the drivers for the old computer, not the new one. I'm not clever enough to describe how to go about it, but be careful.

It's for backup and restoration rather than transfer. I gave a misleading example with the class computers because they're all the same so I can ghost them across without any problems. If you're looking to transfer everything from an old computer to a new one, Windows' Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is the easiest way to go (Accessories menu, System Tools menu). That's providing you're transferring to the same version of Windows. If you're going from XP to Vista, then just start banging your head against the wall now to save time. |

If you have confidental stuff, use at own risk. Photos For small amounts, I use Photobucket or Imageshack. Also used for syncing between computers. Serial Keys I upload to google docs, email to myself, and write down on paper. Passwords I keep in my head. I only use a few passwords, anyways, so it's not hard to forget. Installers/Programs Upload/burn. Other Files Upload/burn. Thats all I can think of right now. *Upload/burn refers to either uploading the file with Mediafire for under 100 MB, or a writable disc or USB drive for bigger ones. |

FireFox 3 When FireFox 3 first came out, I downloaded it. Only to find out my most-used addons were unsupported and it was reaaaaaalllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy sllllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwwww. So I downgraded to FireFox 2, figured I'd go back to FF3 when most my addons were supported. The other day, I went to FireFox 3. My add-ons were supported! But it was still slow on graphic-intensive sites. Some pages would load part-way and then get stuck. I traced it back to an addon called Ad Block. So I uninstalled that, and got Ad Block Plus, which is different but does the same thing. And *poof*, it's fast! Some of my FireFox addons: Bookmark DD -- Find duplicate bookmarks. But gets confusing if you use lots of tags. ColorfulTabs, it makes the tabs colorful! Also, you can set it up so certain colors go to certain domains, like you can make http://www.thebeatles.com purple or something. Foxmarks, backup your bookmarks, sync them between computers, and you can also share with friends. AdBlock Plus, blocks ads, which is good for me 'cos I can't buy anything anyways. Stop Autoplay, which can stop auto-playing videos or music. There's also an option to stop flash, so if you don't have AdBlock Plus, it can also stop those annoying talking ads. PDF Download, simply gives you a choice on if you want to open or download a PDF file. StumbleUpon, rate sites and discover new sites you like. Google Toolbar[/url[, which is just a google search bar and some buttoms you pick. I have mine set up with buttons for gMail and Google Docs. ImageShack Toolbar, lets you upload pictures to imageshack. Occasional error when you upload multiple pictures, but if you have an account, you can go to My Images and they'll be there. And AVG Safe Search, which comes with free AVG anti-virus. It's supposed to prevent you from clicking on bad links. |

Organizing Installers?!?[/url] I hope I'm not the only one doing this. I have a downloads folder with various subfolders, like Productivity, Games, Internet, Utilities, etc. And when I download something, I add it to the proper subfolder, and actually rename it so I know what it is! Then I have some DVD-RW's, so every so often I put it on there. I suppose it's for reinstallations or if my computer crashes. |

I HATE toolbars! They do nothing but suck up system resources for not net gain. Want to search the internet? www.google.com It's ALL you need. And an additional toolbar is double redundant in Firefox and IE7 because there are search bars built in. Need a shortcut to gmail? Bookmark the damn page! Sorry, but toolbars are a waste of time and system resources and most of them carry spyware. |

And the StumbleUpon toolbar, 'cos it's the only way to use it unless you use bookmarklets, but my bookmark toolbar is filled up. |

Not to be mean or anything, but my mom, who calls herself a computer expert, is actually quite stupid. Every few months, this conversation happens: Mom: Oh, this program looks cool!! (referring to some screensaver or a game or something.) Me: Don't install it, it's spyware, trust me. Mom: But it's COOL!!! Me: Well don't ask me for help. A few hours later... Mom: Help me get rid of this program!! Me: It's spyware. I told you! Mom: Get rid of it!! (I really have no choice since she's my mom.) Me: (goes to install Spybot S&D or something) Mom: Don't install that junk on my computer!!! I'm an expert!!! Me: Sorry, can't help you. Mom: You're no good!! |

Me and my friend started a blog, for geekiness. 'Cos we're both geeks. Actually, I'm geekier than her, but she's more organized. Because she usually has to go back and add stuff, because I forget to. http://thegeekeryblog.wordpress.com/ |

One of the oldest tricks in the book is to take a screenshot of somebody's desktop, hide all their icons, and put up the screenshot as their desktop background. If you're really malicious, you can also hide the taskbar. I did this yesterday to mom (sans taskbar), and she wasn't too happy. First, she thought it froze up. Then she accused me of putting a virus on her computer. She calls herself a computer expert??

I discovered a good program for splitting AVI files. You can also re-join them. It's lossless. (Also, virus/spyware scan came out clean.) http://www.bobyte.com/AviSplit/ |
