Why is Rhode Island called Rhode Island when it isn't actually an Island?
Explorer Adriaen Block named it "red island" because of the reddish shore. Apparently when he got there he thought it was an island.

What is Geography?
The study of Earth's landforms.

Even though it's turned out to be the study of maps, even though that's really called cartography.

So you may also ask me questions about U.S. cartography.

So a name given by an assumption stuck. Hmm. You'd think that someone would have corrected his mistake by now!

Thanks for the answer - I've always wondered about that, but never when I was in a position to look it up!

Correction. No World Series has ever been won there. Period. In 1908 they played at West Side Grounds which is now Stroger Hospital.

In answer to your question, it's lucky ONLY THIS YEAR because the Cubs have played so well there. I admit it's been unlucky before. And besides, nothing Cubbish has happened there yet this year, right?

Guys, please stay on the topic of U.S. geography PLEASE!!!!!

Explorer Adriaen Block named it "red island" because of the reddish shore. Apparently when he got there he thought it was an island.
Actually the name of the state is The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Rhode Island then referred to Aquidnick Island which is where Newport is located. The rest of the land that makes up the state is Providence Plantations. However we call it Rhode Island for short.

I think you're right Tony.

But that assessment is only based on a supposed quote of Colin Powell's.
Supposedly he said that in all the wars the U.S. has fought that we only asked for land for our dead to be buried. Since WWII we haven't even asked for that.

I'm not certain Tony but I'm sure I read once that RAF Menwith Hill near Harrogate in Yorkshire is leased to the United States Military.
Maybe Andy can confirm it.
