It's the law: No sagging pants in Chicago suburb
Sun Jul 20, 2:06 PM ET

LYNWOOD, Ill. - Be careful if you have saggy pants in the south Chicago suburb of Lynwood. Village leaders have passed an ordinance that would levy $25 fines against anyone showing three inches or more of their underwear in public.

Eugene Williams is the mayor of Lynwood. He says young men walk around town half-dressed, keeping major retailers and economic development away. He calls the new law a hot topic.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the ordinance targets young men of color.

Young adults in the village, like 21-year-old Joe Klomes, say the new law infringes on their personal style. He says leaders should instead spend money on making the area look nicer.

--------------------------------------------

I say finally! These kids have their asses hanging out most of the time, this law is a long time coming. Don't see it as targeting anyone since I see all races wearing their pants down low. What do you think?

I think it is ridiculous. I think take away your right on freedom to express your self . Also, The fine is even more ridiculous.

I agree with you Dotty. While I can't stand the look and think it would be more appropriate to give someone wearing their pants like that a ticket for stupidity, I would never want something as basic as clothing to be dictated. What next? A ban on happy face t-shirts because that will be the next gang trademark? Just downright ridiculous.

I've never been chased by anyone when they've had their pants around their thighs.

Just sayin'.....

I'm in two minds. If it's not legal to be in public in your underwear (and I know know whether it is or not), then over-exposure of underwear would be covered by that law.

Of course, this particular trend is also covered by the law against pedalling crack.
Put a puppet on it.

I'm old fashioned. I hate seeing these kids with their butt cracks showing, which is what happens with these pants. I'm all for it. I'd like to see it implemented here.

While I dislike the 'style', I think that legislating against it is heavy-handed. If people want to look like morons, then they should be able to.

Most people in the 1980's went around looking completely stupid, but nobody slapped $25 dollar fines on them. :D

It is usually males that do this, you know why? The trend started in prisons, males would wear their pants half down to announce that they were gay and availible for sex. As you know if you 'hit on' the wrong person in jail you will get hurt or killed, so they do this so they approch you. So why would you want to prmote that if you are not gay. I dislike the trend and I think it is indecent and I am happy that cities are adopting the ban.

There are plenty of people who hate this 'fashion', but that is no reason to ban it or slap a fine on those stupid enough to copy it.

What next? Make it unlawful to have tattoos or have piercings? Fine people who wear T-Shirts advertising bands of "questionable morals"?

It's a slippery slope to repress what is, basically, a harmless way to express oneself. I can understand police wanting to squash gang colours, but not something as universal as this, no matter the origins.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
3 inches of underwear exposed. Is someone going to go around chasing people with a ruler?
Ridiculous.

I can just picture a Chicago cop chasing a young gangsta type with a ruler shouting something about wanting to measure his inches.

I'm sure that will go down well - but would it stand up in court?

It's not in Chicago, it's in Lynwood, a Chicago suburb.

It would be ironic if Americans criticised clothing laws in other countries.

Freedom of expression wins over common courtesy, and we wonder why this world is going to hell.

Oh yeah!

I wish places would have heavy fines for littering such as in Singapore, and in Bikini Bottom (SpongeBob's city)
