1. If a site goes down, sometimes Google Cache will have it (although it'd be outdated). Go to google, and type in cache:siteurl.

2. If you have FireFox, download a free add-on caleld Foxmarks. It's mainly for syncing your bookmarks between computers, but can also be used for backing them up. (Remember my computer got ate by spyware a few weeks ago? I lost not one bookmark.)

2. If you can't get your computer's OS on (but the power comes on), hit F8 repeatedly when you first start it up to load the "boot menu", where you can go into Safe Mode. This is really good if you have spyware and it won't let you delete the file, as Safe Mode (usually) does not allow any programs to come on, and it won't be connected to internet.

3. If your internet isn't loading or really slow, most of the time you can just unplug and plug it back in, and it'll work again. Or turn the modem/router/whatever off and back on.

4. Always have a spare keyboard and mouse, especially if you eat and drink around the keyboard.

5. For non-sensitive documents, Google Documents is handy for backing them up. I use Google Docs to backup my lyrics and stories (no I'm not sharing.)

6. Offline browsers are good for downloading photo galleries, but be very careful with them because sometimes you can exceed a sites bandwidth meaning no one can get to it for an hour or two. (I've done it once but it was at 1 am :duh: )

7. Get Spybot Search And Destroy. Also install TeaTimer. It protects against spyware, and TeaTimer keeps things from going in your registry you don't want there. (It will pop up during installations, but if it pops up out of nowhere and has unfamilar name, don't let it change registry.)

Another tip:
Sometimes if your computer is running slow, and you tried everything else, try kicking the CPU. (VERY CAREFULLY!) Sometimes dust gets stuck inside and slows things down. (Yes, I've done it!!!!) It's also a good idea to clean it out every month or so. (You can get special vacuums. NEVER use cleaners.)

I think I'd prefer some compressed air instead of kicking the CPU.

I'm not sure I'd take computer tips from somebody who's accidentally erased her hard drive more than once. I'm pretty sure I'd never take computer tips from somebody who kicks her computer.

Having the most threads about tips doesn't make one an expert.

Mia, your advice is always with wisdom. Are you sure you are not reincarnation of someone I once know?

It was my mom who erased my hard drive. The second time, I delibrately erased to remove spyware.

I didn't mean "kick" literally. I meant, more like a slap. I used to do it all the time, and the computer lasted over 10 years. (I don't know if it still works -- we sold it last year.) 1997-2007 we had.

And not take it out. I mean the outside casing. My old one had a super-durable plastic, but its old, so I dont know about new ones. I don't do it on my new one 'cos I never had trouble with it being slow for no reason.

And, I'm the one who fixed the internets in the school when the technician was unavailable. It was lunch and I was in office. And they were going on about it.
"Lemme try it."
"No you're a kid..."
"Let me try it!"
"Fine."

And then,
"Um...that plug....it's unplugged."
"OH!"

My tip;

1. Switch it off and then on again.

Doesn't work?

I'm out of ideas, sorry.

No, not from the speakers, the noise is from the computer itself, so I slap it and it stops.
