Last Nights Freak Show

Last night I went to an aids fund raiser at Club Gallery in Providence. I had never been to this club and I will never go back. Inside there were acts performed in public that I thought would surely be illegal. The first thing I see after going inside was a woman being tied up by her (hopefully) boyfriend. Now I will admit to watching that as I drank my beer but when I looked around the corner I saw a woman being whipped by a man wearing a dog collar. She seemed to enjoy herself and then bent over the table and proceeded to get ---- by the guy. Well my friend at that time wanted to leave and I couldn't blame her but we were waiting for friends to arrive (turn your cell phones on people). As we waited we saw men dressed as women and then came across the dog collar guy now whipping a guy. I decided to leave then and we waited outside. Kept thinking why would a charity allow a fund raiser at a place like this?

So now that you have heard that experience have you ever been to a freak show like this? What is your weirdest experience?

What was the charity?

Mine is very tame by comparison. I was in Melbourne at a loose end one night and, rather uncharacteristically for me, was in the mood for some blues. So I went walking past a few venues, heard something good coming out of one of them, so went in for a listen. The place was called The Bald Bar but I didn't pay any attention to that because every bar has to have a name, right? Well, it turned out that this one was a bit more literal because all of the men and a few of the women in there were either naturally, deliberately or - in some cases I think - medically bald. Now, I don't know if you've seen any of my photos, but I'm not. I'm more of a mop. And suddenly I was really self conscious about it.

What made things worse is that the good blues quickly stopped and the band started into Brown-Eyed Girl. Now I have a very simple rule: if the band plays Brown-Eyed Girl, I walk. No ifs or buts. Nothing against the song, I've just heard enough shitful cover bands do it as a lazy crown-pleaser for one lifetime. Only this time I couldn't leave because they'd started some lame party game (might have been limbo or something) in the middle of the floor between me and the exit and I did not want to cross that for all kinds of reasons. Took the worst part of about half an hour before I could slink out.

Well Tony sounds like everything was just this side of legal, outside of the public sex show, which couldn't possibly be.

How did you find out about this fundraiser and how was it advertised? I would probably complain if I were you.

I remember going to my first Gay Pride Parade. Let's just say some of the floats were a bit...um....interesting. Last weekend, when I went to my first Gay Pride celebration at a local park there was some people dressed in interesting things.
You've got to expect something outrageous when it comes some AIDS fundraisers. I don't get it though. I can understand having drag queens and stuff like that, but what you described, Tony, that sounded like a total freak show. I'm usually open minded, but that even sounded like it would freak me out.

I'm pretty open minded, but this is all too much for me.

When my doctor started seeing a lot of HIV/AIDS patients, I would see drag queens, etc. in the office and it didn't bother me. However, public sex is just plain wrong.

I've been to AIDS fund raisers here and never seen anything like that. However, they are put on by a charity and I don't think they allow such behavior. They are usually held at local restaurants and I doubt if they would get the use of such places if this behavior took place.

I do know there are bars in Denver where this takes place. I'd never go to one though.

That does seem a very strange thing for charity.

The fundraisers were for AIDS Care Ocean State and AIDS Project RI. My friend was DJ'ing there and we were all going to head to the midnight showing of his locally produced film afterwards. He told me about the benefit but I didn't realize what was in store. Have lost two friends to AIDS and do support these organizations. I should of added that we were all given safe sex kits when we got there, they included condoms and lube. At least they were practicing safe sex (I hope).

Perhaps that was the point - to give a demonstration of how to be safe. A warning to polite society beforehand might have been a good idea though. ^o)

Nope! we don't have very much excitement in my town. it pretty much boring. The only thing great is looking at old Buildings and tomb stones. Or the fact Our town was name after a Donner party survivor. You know the people who got stuck up in the mountain and they survive by eating the dead.

Wow, sure you weren't in Soho Tony? And I'm not talking about NYC's Soho, I've seen and heard about some pretty kinky times in London's Soho.

I've been exposed to so much that not very much shocks me anymore. Take this story for an example. I was at one of our lovely bars downtown Detroit (ok, you can kinda guess that this place is all ready not a 5 Star bar) and was dying for the loo. This bar was only meant for one person at a time, but when I walked in, I had found two other girls doing about a grand's worth of coke on the toilet seat. Knowing the guy's bathroom was waaaaayy worse than the ladies', I just looked at the sorting princesses and said, "don't waste any of that, you know coke's not cheap in this town and clean that seat good 'cause I have to go soon!"

I've been to gay bars with friends where I have found the ladies' rooms are used as one night stand rooms. I've seen some nasty fights in bars, been with friends while they waited for some dope or coke (and no, I don't use a single drop.) I hung out with drag queens, they are some of the most halirous people I have ever met! I have seen a lot of things that most people would cringe at and what Tony saw is what I'd probably would say is a more artstic way of some things I have seen.
