I saw this on a segment on Fox News. I couldn't find the story there but I found a news clip at http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/John_Lennon_statue_guarded_by_Cubans_after_thefts A John Lennon statue with his famous glasses on has been a hot spot for thieves as Cubans crack down on the thefts to protect the statue. Thieves have already swiped the famous round-rimmed glasses twice which was eight years ago as 4 retired Cubans protect the statue on a 12 hour 24 hour interval watch. A Cuban watchman said if you turn your back on the glasses they might disappear. The man smokes up to seven Cuban cigars a day as he watches the glasses on the statue. The statue of Beatles Vocalist and guitarist John Lennon is made entirely out of bronze. Fearing another theft the guards keep the glasses in their shirt pockets or in rags in an attempt to keep the glasses safe from thieves. When people want to come and take pictures of the statue, the guards then take the glasses back out of their shirt pockets or rags and put them back on Lennon's eyes so people can photograph the statue. http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/John_Lennon_statue_guarded_by_Cubans_after_thefts |

I saw this mentioned about the statue of John at Liverpool Airport. People need to lighten up. It's exactly the kind of thing John would have done.

Hope the guards take a rest for sometime because protecting the statue is a very hard job, imagine the guard is looking at the statue then turns to his back, then the glasses are stolen very quickly. But of course if they take the day off another guard should take watch. |

John was a larrikin. He didn't show respect for things like that. In the same position, he would probably have pinched the glasses too. He's probably laughing at the whole idea. |

If he was young in the same position, he probably would, maybe, it depends on the statue. If there was a statue of Che Guevara in my way I would help to break it. I don't think he would act like a little b*tch at age 40 or 68. People grow old, people change, people get better or not. A 18 years old Lennon and a 68 are two different people. Looking at the Beatle John and the older John you can see the differences, it's obvious, you see if you want to. |

Oh, I'm certainly not saying he would have done it if he were alive today. John in his 60s wouldn't do it, not even in his 30s. But the cool thing about John was that as he matured, he still remembered what it was like to be young. I think he'd get a good old laugh out of it. |
