It's official. I can't take another day of this endless torture known as my job. By this time tomorrow, I will likely be unemployed. And you know what? I don't really give a flyin' f*ck!!

My mental health is worth more than any job or paycheck at this point in my life!!! After 12 years at the same place, of keeping the majority of my clients happy and under contract, if that's not good enough for you motherf&ckers, then SHOVE this job up yours!!!

And by the way, I think I WILL call the labor board about your practice of keeping GPS tracking on your employees EVEN when they're NOT ON THE CLOCK!!! :realmad:

7-11 is looking really good right now. ;)

Bev, I have to jump in here and be the voice of reason. Find something else first. You put up with this for 12 years, another couple of weeks won't hurt. Don't put yourself in that position, especially in this economy. If you want a break just tell your propective employer you can't start till July but just don't walk out on this job. Unless of course you've just found yourself some sugar daddy and then I say park the car in Inglewood and forget to tell them that when you quit

Why should she stay in a place which WATCHES every move you make with GPS? That does sound illegal to me. How can an employer watch everything you do, even when you're NOT working? What I do on my free time is MY business and no employer should punish me for doing stuff on MY time. Is it legal to put GPS to watch what an employee does? It shouldn't.

Unfortunately there are times when you need to do more for your mental health and not so much your financial health. I've been there myself. It certainly isn't easy to do, though. Hope things all work out for you Bev! Life can be miserable when your job is all consuming, just don't go looking at Countrywide they are not good employers even without the financial problems.

Well, I am still employed . . . . for now. :-/ The owner wasn't even in today, so I had no one I could turn in my walking papers to. I was so busy fielding problems from customers (AND resolving them!) that I never got a chance to do anything else.

I did hear from a co-worker, though, that now they have a NEW gripe with all of the sales staff, so we'll be getting a weekly butt-chewing on Monday at our weekly staff meeting.

I hope I will be able to locate something over the weekend, even if it's a temporary job. I'm past the age of being able to get paid for taking off my clothes, and I'm too cold-natured to walk the streets at night, but I could actually handle phone sex chat lines. I hear the pay is good and I DO have quite an imagination. ;)

Thanks everyone for being here for me. It means the world to me . . . and to my sweet little furkids. (They enjoy having food in their little tummies and a warm bed to sleep in, so mom hasn't done anything rash -- YET!! ^o) )

Oh Anna, I amd so sorry to hear that! There have been a few layoffs where I work, their jobs went to the Phillippines, but the rest of our jobs are only guaranteed for the rest of the year! You're going to live. That's what you are going to do. Sometimes we DO need that kick in the ass to get us motivated! Hated my last job and when they decided to move, they wanted me to go with them and I was not about to move out of state leaving behind my mom and boyfriend just so that I can keep a thankless job where they treat their employees like shite! They're getting their comeuppance tho, they are Countrywide and in trouble. Through them, and hating the job, I got a job working with some very nice people who showed me that employers really do care about their people. Now we are owned by another big corporation but they did give me the chance to see what is like to be respected. You will, too!

(((((ANNA))))) I'm so, so sorry to read your news. I know what that feels like. Back in the '90s (remember them?), I was fired from a management job because I was the only one on the staff who had the backbone (and stupidity?) to tell our manager what she didn't want to hear!!! I spent months on unemployment until I found something else.

I know what it feels like to lose what feels like your extended family. . . I know you socialized with friends from work. Don't be surprised if some or all of them aren't there for you. It's amazing how people want to stay far, far away from an uncomfortable situation. People don't always respond the way we might hope or expect them to.

Please PM or call me if you need a friendly ear. Even though you're not around here much anymore, I still think of you often and hope that life is treating you well. :flower:

Bev, what's the latest in your world.

I have to say I am a pretty good boss. I go out of my way to make sure my co-workers are happy and feel like they are all being treated fairly and respected. Now it is the summer and things are slower and I have to cut hours. I hate it but I told them I am doing it to insure all of our jobs for next season. I feel like I am being taken advantage of tho and that hurts me. They are making me take out the boss in me and I really didn't want to have to do that.. I keep telling myself,'it's only lunch' but it's also someone elses money and career. It's difficult to be the one in charge sometimes. You have to do things you don't want to but that's part of the territory I guess.

Irene, I would love to have you as a boss. I've been one myself and no, it's no fun when you have to cut hours or make employees do the jobs they were hired to do. That's part of the territory. I also know that you don't forget to treat people as humans, not machines and I'm sure you remember to thank them and treat them with respect.

I can't imagine that you would ever do something so vile as to install GPS tracking devices on employees' work cell phones and require them to keep them on 24/7 and spy on them whenever the mood strikes.

I can't wait until the school term ends -- in about 2 more weeks -- and then I can start to really look for another job in earnest. That is, if I haven't gotten the boot before then! ;)

Are you a teacher, Bev, I forgot. It seems like some schools watch over their teachers and what they do with their spare time so they don't have something like the Mary Kay Latorno thing happening. That doesn't seem right though, but people seem to want to put teachers on a higher plane since they deal with kids.

Anna,
I am so sorry to hear your news. You have been with this company for a while. I just know, with the great work you do you will come up with a great job.

It is amazing what some workers have to put up with these days. I am so glad to be semi - self employed. I don't think I could go back to my job ever again. I let some people have it just before I left and I think they are going to get another a** chewing in a week or so because they led me on and it cost me big bucks.

Theresa, I'm sorry that you lost out on some hard-earned $$$$$ due to someone else's incompetence. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing that someone will pay a price for that. Small consolation, I know. :-/

What are you doing, now that you've retired from your teaching post? I hope you are having time to do all those things that you've had to skip in the past because you were tied up with work and other responsibilities. I hope you and Bucky will have time now to go out and act like a couple of crazy teenagers. :yahoo:

Yeah, the situation at my job has spiraled out of control. We switched cell phone providers back in December and life has been miserable ever since. Working in outside sales, my boss wants to make sure he squeezes every drop of blood out of every penny, so ever since he's discovered GPS phones, he requires us to carry them with us wherever we go. He promised at first that the tracking would be turned off at the end of the workday, but that turned out not to be the case. He gets printouts showing everywhere we drive, every stop we make, and the minutes at each stop. It's INSANE!!! He's turned into "Mr. CSI"!!

He requires us to keep the phones turned on 24/7, so that if customers call, they will be able to leave a message, in order for us to be able to get back to them right away. ^o) Of course, by leaving the phone on, the GPS also stays on. In the past, we were never required to leave our phones on outside of business hours. I think he's using this as an excuse to be able to see where we go and what we do in our off time. A couple of us have started leaving our phones at home when we're off the clock, and we just let all calls go to voice mail.

I've worked for these people for 12 years and if they don't trust me by now, then I don't need to work there anymore. The thing that's been keeping me hooked, other than the fact that I hate poverty, is that they provide me with a car, and they pay for all my gas and insurance. I can use it for personal driving, too. Right now, with gas at nearly $5.00/gallon, that's HUGE!! I would have a really difficult time giving up that perk right now, but at some point, my sanity will become more important than my need to escape paying car insurance and high gas bills! It's only a matter of time, I'm afraid.

Linda, Molly and Irene, thanks for weighing in. It sure helps to know I have people in my corner somewhere in the world. ;)

And Irene, I will be doing some research on the legality of what's going on. This is all so new that there may not be any established legal precedents regarding this issue yet. The technology is ahead of the law in this case, I think. :hmm:

Bev,
I hope things are looking a little better since the weekend. I can understand your point about the the car and other perks but you are right, your sanity means a whole lot more.
There has to be some limits that your employer can require you to do and keeping your phone on 24/7 sounds a little suspect.
Are there others you work with that feel like you do?

Retirement from full time teaching is going to be great - I think. Once I get used to it. Before I left, my administration wanted me to work part time running a program that only I could do. Because of restrictions in the retirement system I had to form a company in order to work back in the public sector. So I did. Before I am finished I will spend a couple of thousand getting permits, taking classes on business ( not anything I know about ) and generally getting up and running.
I did that quickly so we could talk $$.
The last day I worked I was told that the superintendent was considering pulling out of this program. Boy was I - and am I - p*ssed. Now I have an investment and no income.................
I am hoping to still be able to do something with this business - part time consulting but maybe not............we shall see. I'll keep plugging along..........

Yes, we are planning to do things we haven't be able to...... :giggle:
I'll keep you posted.

I've been seeing on the news today that some employees are starting to sue their employers for requiring them to have their cell phones on 24/7 and not being paid. Many are rebelling and doing what you are doing--leaving it home and on or just plain turning it off.

Theresa, I sure hope you can put pressure on that superintendent through one person or another and remind them that you did what they asked you to do and now they're reneging on their part of the bargain. You probably don't have anything in writing, but I would think that they would still have a need for the programs you're able to provide. Education is a tough field especially now, what with all the budget cuts that the state is facing. I know administrators who don't even know if they'll have a job in the fall. This after a lifetime spent in the school district. And it's statewide. :pinch:

You know, one of my sisters visits students who aren't able to attend school because of physical limitations or other reasons, and she sets up in-home learning programs. She works for Easter Seals. She really enjoys the satisfaction of coming to the aid of those who get shoved aside by the school system and she loves watching these little souls be able to learn in a setting that allows them to work at their own ability levels without being subjected to indifferent teachers or cruel classmates.

Have you ever considered looking into that type of a program? It sounds like you do sort of the same thing, only through the school system. You are such a gentle, caring and patient person. I would think someone with your skills and disposition would be in great demand.

I have faith that you'll find the right fit for you. In the meantime, I do hope you'll get out and enjoy yourself this summer. I really wish that we could meet up somewhere with a few others. We had soooo much fun in Vegas. I still look at those pictures and remember what a great time we all had. Drop me a line if you think you could make it to Vegas or somewhere in SoCal. Linda, what program were you watching? I would love to check it out and get some information. Was it CNN??

Lisa and Bill, yes, there probably is something that I could nail them on, but I don't have the money or the emotional reserves right now to take on the legal system, and the labor board has a long-standing backlog of cases.

When I left my last job in 1995, I had to file a claim against my former employer who was trying to escape paying me commissions I was owed. The case worker at the labor board told me that it's usually a 2-month wait to get a case reviewed and a decision made regarding the legitimacy of the claim. By some strange fluke, this case worker grew up in the same area of the country that I did, and he took a liking to me. He found a cancellation on the calendar and instead of taking the next person on the waiting list, he plugged my case in.

On the day that my boss was supposed to show up for the hearing, he called the labor board and told them that he had a check for the full amount of my commissions. He didn't even dispute my claim!! Greedy b*stard!! He just wanted to make me jump through hoops and drag out the payment so that I would either get tired of fighting for them and give up or he could just leave the money in his interest-bearing account. :nono: :nono:

And yes, my other co-workers, one in particular, has a HUGE problem with this whole thing. She has already started making noise at work. She went in last week and told them she wants a copy of her personnel file and every piece of paper that she has ever signed since she began working there. They got really paranoid about it and they are worried that she's being coached by an attorney. They told her that they didn't have the files she was after, that the owner had taken ALL the personnel files home 6 months ago and has never brought them back!! :o

This co-worker doesn't think she ever signed the non-compete clause that we were all required to sign a couple of years ago. A former co-worker quit on bad terms with the owner and started his own company, soliciting business from clients that he had signed up for the former company. Well, the sh*t hit the fan, the owner sued this guy, and ever since then, the owner is the most paranoid person you can imagine! He thinks everyone is out to get him. He has cameras all over the office and in the parking lot. He has a huge TV in his office that shows split-screen images from about a dozen cameras, and another TV that actually records these images in case he needs to watch tape of some wrongdoing taking place. Nice, huh??? ^o)

Yes, it was on CNN and they are some class action lawsuits starting up.

My last boss never had me or the person who quit just before me sign a non-compete clause. There was one on the server, but I keep copies of everything a boss makes me sign. Too many years at the IRS. I did not go after any of his accounts, except to tell one of my friends who I referred there not to go there. I didn't even tell him where I was working. The other co-worker did go after and get one of his accounts and he was not happy with her. However, he could not find the non-compete paperwork because we never signed it.

Bev, paranoia has gotten the best of your boss. It sounds like working in a casino, where they can watch everything you do. My casino boss mostly watched the casino floor and not the office. However, some valuable chips that were never released disappeared from the safe and he watched the tape on that. Never heard who was responsible, but I was never accused because I didn't do it.

Yep, Linda, paranoia has gotten the better of my boss. The older he gets, the worse he becomes. And the downturn in the economy sure hasn't helped matters. What's really, really sad is that he DOES have a kind heart when it comes to animals and he has no problem with allowing me to bring my dog or cat into the office on occasion. He also gave me a week's pay the year my parents passed away, as I had used up all my paid time flying back and forth to visit them. Not many employers would do that.

He is affiliated with the county sheriff's department, and both of his sons are sheriffs. He has the mindset that everyone is out to commit some type of misdeed and he even told our manager that he trusts NO ONE! How sad is that??

I've worked for these people for 12 years, and up until the last couple of years, I would've never said a bad word about them. But this electronic, up-our-butts spying technology has all but erased any respect I ever had for these folks. I find myself wanting to live down to their expectations. The morale in our office is at an all-time low, but he will never admit to being the cause of it. I think before much longer, he is going to reap what he sows. :-/

Bev,
Thanks for the ideas. I will look into it plus I have a couple of places I can look at also. The only problem is the nearest offices for places like Easter Seals, etc. are 75 miles away. However, I would like to do some independent work for them in this area. It will require travel but I really do like working with the families.

I do plan to meet with the superintendent. Hopefully this week. I have to attend a school board meeting on Wed. to be recognized for retirement so I kinda want to wait until that is done. Hopefully I can talk to him before the end of the week....
Not looking forward to that one as the man can be a jerk... :hmm:
You are much to kind in your comments....if you only knew the really me...
Just kidding.

You know, it sounds like your boss is maybe having some mental problems.....being paranoid and all.....do you think that could be part of the problem??

Hope all

Are you leaving Las Vegas?? (Sorry, no pun intended.)

Don't worry too much about the weight thing. The employer cares about the job you will do, not what size you wear. After all, in your field, it's the end product that counts. -_-

I just found out on Thursday that our call center will be closed within 6 months. When they announced that that my company will get rid of 200 employees I didn't think it would be us... the timeframe for us is anywhere from 60 days warning to 6 months... I now have to decide if I'm staying to the end to collect severence (I'd only get 2 weeks being I've been there 2.5 years) or try to find something before. I've been through this before so I hate this feeling...

Dean, sorry to hear that. Looking for a new job is, to me, probably even more painful than going to the dentist.

I'm not sure which type of industry you're in, but are there other companies in your area that perform the same types of services?

I remember when I first moved to California a million years ago, I didn't know a single soul and had no job prospects. I went to a temporary agency, was sent out on an assignment and within 2 weeks, I was offered a full-time job. Within a month, I was offered a supervisory position, even though others had been there much longer than me!

Maybe you could start speaking to some temp agencies in your area. I've also taken some part-time positions when I've been in between regular jobs. I've done catering, telephone surveys for the movie industry, and I've even worked for an inventory company.

I'm still trying to think of how one can make money by rescuing animals. Now THAT would be my ideal job!

Good luck to you, Dean. I know you'll land on your feet.

[/quote]Anna, is your boy friends office near the Kodak theater? I think that is around that area. L.A. Ink is on La Brea & Fountain. Rather a cheesy area. I had an appointment 2 weeks ago, right when I was ready to leave, I got a call that it was cancelled. Now I'm not sure what to do. I'm feeling a bit chicken.

Hope you have luck finding a truck. Would your boy friend or parents be willing to help you rent a U-Haul? Are you moving to L.A. for sure? If so, that is cool, and not too far from Victorville.

Hang in there, you could be moving to Lancaster :hmm:

OK, time for me to jump back in with an update.

I got laid off yesterday. I will be off the job until August 10th. That is, unless I decide NOT to return. And I hope that I won't have to!

Today was the first peaceful day I've had in over a year. I filed for unemployment online, from the comfort of my bedroom, with Emerson at my feet, and Peggy, my 18-year-old cat on my chest. I was in HEAVEN!! :tranquil:

I could get used to this kind of life.

Oh, and I forgot to add . . . I had to turn in my cell phone, the one with the evil spy/tracking device. Big Brother can't watch me now!! :yahoo:

The owner said they are having cash flow problems. The thing is, they didn't lay off others who hold a similar position. They did give me an opportunity to take my former position during the next 6 weeks, but as that would involve working about a 14-hour day, and being on my feet all day, that was not a viable option for me. Especially with having a little blind guy at home now, and needing trips to the doctor. I really think they knew I would elect the layoff, and as I'm one of the higher-paid employees, I think they chose me to push out.

I've also had a really tortured relationship during the past 6 months, as a result of the employee tracking that they do. I have serious issues with that, as I don't enjoy having Big Brother watching 24 hours a day. (I've already said my piece on this topic, ad nauseum).

I'm going to enjoy a little down time, do sod all for a few days, and be a good mom to my furkids. Maybe take a trip somewhere. Catch up on some reading. Just be a bum for a bit. THEN, I'll start looking in earnest for my next job.

Anyone want to head to SoCal and hang out for a few days??? :yahoo:

Linda, I had to turn in the company car, for "legal" reasons, meaning that while I'm officially off the payroll, I wouldn't be covered to drive a company car. After the owner found out that I would be left without transportation and knowing that I have to take Emerson to vet appts., he felt bad and rented a car for me. I will have it for the next month.

I guess this will force me to finally retrieve my own car from that bad memory of an ex that I used to live with for 14 years. I can't wait! ^o)

So Bev congrats and join the club. My restaurant was shut for the summer so technically I have been laid off too. They did ask me to come a work at the bakery a few days a week but I told them I would rather work in the office and learn more about the company and management but I would help out where needed. I am a salaried employee so I don't know if they will pay me hourly now or what. I would love to file unemployement and just chill for the summer but I don't think that's an option for me.

That really was kind of your boss to rent a car for you, make sure it doesn't have trackable GPS ;) .

We definately have to arrange a meet in Vegas now!!

Yeah, Irene -- I'm ready to head to Vegas . . . or even Arizona. ;) Let the conspiring begin!! :)

And Linda, the owner does have a heart, as he's a real animal person. THAT is why he rented the car for me. (His beloved dog died 3 weeks ago and I had given him a sympathy card. I also made a donation to the Sheriff's dept. canine unit in memory of his dog. He knows how much I feel for people when they lose a furchild or have one in distress. He's the same way.)

He had not planned to rent the car, believe me. When he realized what kind of situation he had just created, I think he felt really guilty. Anyway, I did thank him for the use of the car and offered to pay him for it, but he declined my offer.

Well, my door is always open and you have a free place to stay!! You can meet Mr. Emerson and Miss Peggy. :) Plenty to do here. Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, driving past Paul's house . . .

Spamalot sounds like a tempting possibility, but I'm a little nervous about spending a bunch of money right now. If we went for a couple of nights during the week, we could get the $99/night rate and split it. Then we could look for a deal on the tix. If I go to Vegas, though, you know I'd want to go see LOVE again. ;)
