Tomorrow, 28 th May, I shall have completed 40 years working for the same company! Looking back over all those years I'm amazed how fast the time has passed by. I still remember clearly the first day as I walked in the door, not knowing what to expect and certainly not expecting to be here this long!

I suppose one of the highlights (The only one I suppose) was being asked by my boss if I like The Beatles. 'Sure, their ok I said' , I was then told to get a taxi ( my first time alone in one) and go the Apple offices in Wigmore Street and collect photographs of The Beatles! No Beatles were there though. I was told it's far to early for them. It was about 10am.

I suppose to last in one company for so long is quite an acheivement, but it's been worth it.

Congrats Jim, that is an impressive amount of time, longer than most marriages. I do hope they recognize you for your loyalty.

Congratulations Jim! Not many people from our generation can say that! And I'm sure the next generation won't, unfortunately say that. I hope you retire with a nice pension when the time comes, in the appreciation for keeping the company in business by being a great employee.

My brother retired this year after 40 years at UNITED AIRLINES and he didn't even get a dinner or watch. He was the oldest/longest employee in his department. And he had no pension ~ so much for airline regulations.

I wish better for you Jim.

I took early retirement from the IRS at 25 years. I do have a placque, but no watch. Have a pretty safe pension also. If I had stayed, I would have retired about 18 months ago with 32 years of service.

Congratulations, Jim.

Thanks. It seems very few people from this generation start work before early 20's! It's bad about the way your brother was treated. Not even getting a pension sucks, although pensions are changing over here now, for the worse it seems.

Well done!! I should think that they should recognize you in some fashion, hopefully, it will be something good!! A meal is nice, but something for your office wall would be good too! Anyways, kudos!

That's something that doesn't happen too often! Good for you.

I know someone who has worked in the same office since 1964, and I remember her telling us one day how she was a shy young thing of 17 when she first started there. Her sister-in-law also works in the same department, so she met her husband also through the office.

One of the first things I thought was "A hard day's night" came out when she first set foot in that place. Always the Beatles fan..haha.

We all wanna change the world.
