THE NEW YORK TIMES: "Behind TV Analysts: Pentagon's Hidden Hand Helps Steer Military Analysts"

'To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as "military analysts" whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.

'Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.

'The effort, which began with the buildup to the Iraq war and continues to this day, has sought to exploit ideological and military allegiances, and also a powerful financial dynamic: Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air...'

The piece is 11 pages long, so a bit of a slog, but I urge you to read the entire article. For my part, I wish only to point out the eerie use of the words "MindWar" and "Psyops" - that is, "Psychological Operations" - by the analysts themselves to describe exactly what it is they are engaging in.

Is anyone surprised? The White House had columnists on the payroll for years. That was yet another scandal that got lost in amongst all the others. Then there was "Operation Home Front" where soldiers on leave for Thanksgiving and Christmas were expected to promote the war to friends and family while they were home, yet whenever anyone reports that lots of the soldiers just want to get the hell out, they're accused of politicising the troops.

You can bet your bottom dollar that it will be the New York Times that gets accused of bias over this and not the complicit media. Give me a break!
Put a puppet on it.
