DRIGGS, Idaho - Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts — driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance — were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff's office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she'd just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

The 69-year-old Wells, founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute and organizer of the region's annual family movie festival called the Spud Fest, then failed a sobriety test.

Wells' lawyer, Ron Swafford, said that a friend of Wells' testified that he'd left a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle after using it that day, and that Wells was unaware of it. Swafford also said several witnesses were prepared to testify that Wells had very little to drink at the party and was not intoxicated when she left. He said she was swerving on the road because she was trying to find the heater controls in her new car.

Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
Wow...must have been a S L O W news day. A "where is she now" actress from a 60's TV show.
(and I always liked Mary Ann over Ginger)

Marijuana is not addictive, stop believing the anti-drug crowd.

Oh the cardboard box remark, is that aimed at homeless people? The majority of them are just victims of living paycheck to paycheck. Many of us could have the same misfortune befall us, times are tough after all.

Marijuana is not addictive, stop believing the anti-drug crowd.

Substances effect different people different ways. And you never find out until it's too late.

As a rule, alcohol is not addictive. It's not addictive to me. But tell that to someone who can't stop once they've had their first one. Tell that to people who simply can't face the world with alcohol in their system.
The same goes for THC. It's not addictive to me but I'm lucky. I just find it smelly and boring.

So while marijuana is not instantly physically addictive the way nicotine or heroin are, to simply say it's not addictive is as simplistic and misleading as saying it leads to harder stuff - which it does if the individual is predisposed to try harder stuff anyway but not if they aren't.

Pot may not be as bad as some of the "just say no" crowd claim, but it can turn certain people psychotic. I've met them.
Put a puppet on it.

I think if you want to smoke pot or whaever in the privacy of you home and stuff you face with snacks fine, the minute you get in a car stoned (that car is considered a weapon) you go to jail.

ANYTHING is addictive if you do it day in and day out. the cardboard box remark had nothing to do with homeless people. it was a dig at someone (no one in particular) who's life is dedicated to weed and how they ignore what's ahead of them. before they know it, their life has passed them by and they have nowhere to go. and there IS withdrawal from it. do a search, the withdrawal is a nightmare. I LIVED WITH IT, OK??? for years. i have seen lives ruined by it.

maybe you are thinking about some dude playing guitar in the street collecting coins in his guitar case, or someone who has a few joints on the weekend. i am talking about someone who WAKES up to light a blunt and does it all day long, night long, goes to bed, wakes up and does it all over again. doing that for years, then suddenly stopping...i would not want to be around that person. the hostility is unbearable. if you, tonyhemp, smoke weed and think it's cool and neat to 'chill' good for you. we all have our lives to live. i wasn't born yesterday. and please don't stereotype me in with the anti-drug crowd. i have a mind of my own and am not afraid to speak it.

I use want him high to leave me alone. well, we haven't been togeather since 1990. and, I would never be back with him. it was a night mare waking up to someone who was never happy unless he was high.

yes, it's a vicious circle. it takes weeks/months for them to 'become better', then when they might be weaned off it, they become bored and start to do it again. they don't know how to live life without it. i think some depend on it to 'have a personality' and it's like a bandage to all their shortcomings.

when they don't have it after being on it so long they become aggressive, nasty, mean, argumentative -- you name it. a bunch of negativeness comes out of them. i understand what you say when you say you wanted him to be high. that seems to be the only relief but it only adds to the problem and the cycle just goes round and round.

I am certainly not part of the 'anti-drug' crowd, but spent my late teenage years living in an area with and socializing with many people who were psychologically addicted to cannabis and what some of the members are saying here is absolutely right - without it, those people become irritatated and spent their time trying to raise the money to buy the stuff to get them 'chilled out' again. When they were high, they were laughing - when they were without the stuff, they were people to avoid. These people were also unemployed and claiming social security benefit and, as they spent their days high, had no real interest in working. There was, inevitably, a large social cost of marijuana use to our society at that time.

As has been publicised greatly in the UK and the Netherlands recently, a lot of the cannabis which finds its way onto the street these days is 'skunk', a strain of marijuana grown in nutrient-rich water which is a lot more powerful than the weed most of of our previous generations were laughing along to in the 60's and 70's. The stronger the THC levels in cannabis, the more likely that the regular smoker will face psychological problems in later life such as short-term memory loss, anxiety, psychosis and depression although the medical community haven't yet reached a consensus about the long-term use of marijuana.

Having said that and, while I agree with Dan that people who smoke a reefer and drive should face criminal charges and possible jail time, I don't see any problem with the occasional use of cannabis. Just as drinking alcohol every day in great quantities will be detrimental to your health and will inevitably lead to mental health issues in later life (if you're lucky enough to live that long), there's no problem with someone occasionally having a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine to let their hair down. I don't see why the occasional joint should be any different. Each to their own, in that respect.

Of course, when it comes my job, I have a zero tolerance attitude towards drugs. Drugs and any job where you're responsible for anyone else's life just don't mix, just as drugs and driving do not mix.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I'm actually glad this thread has opened up to a wider discussion about cannabis. I recently saw a debate about this subject on another forum turn nasty and get locked and wagered that we could have the same debate here without the need for such drastic measures. I'm pleased to be winning that wager at the moment. ;)

me too! and what you said was exactly right and very well said. i think unless one goes through the real deal they see the whole cannabis thing through rose-colored glasses.

in fact this here sentence freaked me out: "The stronger the THC levels in cannabis, the more likely that the regular smoker will face psychological problems in later life such as short-term memory loss, anxiety, psychosis and depression." that explains alot...sad to say.

Here's the funny thing though: years ago I was sitting on the floor beside a coffee table with a friend.... I can't remember his name now.... I think he moved into some share accommodation with some like minded individuals..... that's what his mum told me anyway....

Where was I? Um, oh yeah! Yeah, we were sitting around on the floor eating chips and Tim Tams and we were watching Gilligan's Island because we'd lost the remote and neither of us could be bothered getting up to change the channel.

And I remember my mate just kept giggling all the time. I asked him what was so funny and he said "Maryann is so stoned!"

He was right!

LOVE when they tell me how much smarter and creative they are when they are smoked up!

anyway, i guess i'm bitter coz of all the people i've known who's lives have been ruined by it. perhaps my family is a buncha weaklings in the mind department so i'm not seeing the goodness, joy and constructiveness it brings to others.

Maybe some people stay stoned because who they are with. After all everything looks better through red glassy eyes :P

Seriously people are addicted to everything, up to and including sex. It's their personality not the thing they claim to be addicted too.

*Now where are those women addicted to sex?
