This thread is to share any good news you have received recently. I'm sure there was a thread exactly for this, but I've looked through many pages of this forum and can't find it, so - lo and behold - here's a new one (if anyone can find the old one, I'm happy to merge this one into it).

---

My good news is that I recently applied for and, after interview, successfully gained promotion. I am no longer 'just' a Train Driver. I am now a Driver & Driver Trainer, which means that I will be training people how to drive trains and will, after attaining the relevant qualifications (within perhaps six months), be a Driver Trainer/Assessor. This means that I will not only be training drivers, but will be able to pass new drivers out and also pass existing drivers out on new routes/trains. Another part of my job will involve taking training days, which gives me a chance to utilise my IT skills.

It means lots of paperwork & lots of hard work to gain the qualifications needed to do my job well, but it keeps my job interesting and is a welcome break from the monotony of merely driving. It also gives me a chance to improve my skills, learn new ones, keep on top of my knowledge and gain meaningful qualifications which won't harm my future employment prospects.

I'm quite pleased about this, so wanted to share my good news with people who may be interested and, perhaps, happy for me. :)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Andy, that's fabulous news, congratulations.

My good news is my wonderful and gorgeous new man, who treats me like I should be treated. He could be the one. And it's quite possible that I could bore everyone here to tears talking about him. :wub:

Congratulations, Andy! How cool that you get to train new drivers. I know you will do well. :)

My news is that I've just turned in my final assignment for the sixth course toward my Master's Degree. :yahoo:

I have been working my *ss off for the past year, and it feels good to know that there are only four courses left in my program. I have a 4.0 grade point average right now, so I know all of my hard work is paying off. :boogie:
What a long, strange trip it's been....

Thanks, Lisa - yes, it's cool and also quite a huge responsibility. As much as I'm pleased, I'm also a little apprehensive too. I suppose that's normal.

Great news that you're coming to the end of your Masters. Hope your final assignment keeps your GPA that high! :)

Well done Andy! Interesting as your job description sounds like a cross between two jobs on my company, Driving Instructer and Traction Trainer.

Thanks, Mark. To be honest, I don't know any other company that has a position like it, but ours have always done things a little differently... just for the hell of it, sometimes!

Before our current franchisees took over, we had three levels of instructors/assessors at the depot;

Driver Trainers - which other companies would call Driver Instructors
Driver Instructors/Inspectors - trained to a Driver Standards Manager level
Driver Standards Manager - who was like a combined DSM & depot manager.

Now we have;

Driver Trainers - similar to a Driver Instructor
Driver Trainers/Assessors - who are inbetween Driver Instructors and DSMs
Driver Standards Managers - who are now more like other companies' DSMs and enjoy less power than they used to have

- as the real boss is;

Area Operations Manager - who is ours & another depot's overall manager.

I suspect that I'm going to be used as a bit of a general dogsbody for the DSMs - whenever they need a download or a training day taken, etc., but that's par for the course. I'm just looking forward to the training and to be doing something a bit different for a change. Bit monotonous after a while, isn't it? ^_^ ;)

So does your company have a school as such? Someone told me that Thamlink only took on existing drivers but I thought that practise had been stopped by ATOC. Will you be off track for extended periods teaching rules?

It's certainly possible, but they do have a training school at Hornsey which, up to now, has only really been used for the ex-Great Northern side. There's a couple of dedicated classroom-based trainers there who would be more likely to take the rules courses. I think I'll be more of a 'hands on' trainer. Practical handling/safety days & the like.

TL have, for a few years, taken on and trained both people from 'the street' and also existing rail staff who wanted to become drivers. I joined TL back in 2004 and trained with them - before that I was with Southern.

We're taking on lots of people at the moment, as we've had quite a few retire/leave and we're going to have some new routes over the next 7 years - as well as getting some 377s in the near future. That's why they need a few more Trainers/Assessors.
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Lisa, congratulations on your continuing great work on your Masters degree. Best of luck to you with your remaining courses.

Clare, that is fantastic news about your new guy. I hope we'll be hearing more and more good news from you!

Mark, I am thrilled that you found a spoon, isn't life grand?

My good news is after nearly two weeks I am healthy again and have finally kicked a truly miserable sinus infection, and that Grace and Pat seem to have finally gotten healthy too. I feel really happy.

What a nice thread! How good to read about people's news.

My good news is that Prunella Scales is coming in to record something for my company www.wirelesstheatrecompany.co.uk at the end of March which is a very big deal for us, and also we're co producing a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer! Fun...

Keep your fingers crossed, kids. By this time next week, I might have a "real" job. :lol:

I say "real" because right now, I'm listening to scanners for two fire adjustment companies. I've got a job interview Monday with an answering service for a local doctor's office. It's part time, but I'll be getting out for a few hours. :) The woman who will be my supervisor is a really nice person (spoke to her on the phone today). :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

About the job (hope that's not insensitive) I would take it and if modelling jobs come along maybe your boss would work with you or you could just quit!
