Marks and Spencer is to begin charging its food shoppers for carrier bags.
Customers will have to pay 5p for plastic bags, with the money raised going to an environmental charity.

Chief executive Sir Stuart Rose said the company wanted to "make it easy for our customers to do their bit to help the environment".

Finally, I am so happy about this,
Oxfam are trying to stop plastic bags by the end of the year, the majority of the public are pretty positive about it but there are some who have given me absolute hassle over it, altough I am a nightmare over it. When it was announced yesterday by M&S I had a few customers in and I told them we know longer give out plastic bags either and it started the whole thing with M&S so at least others are doing it too. I have had some very funny conversations with some customers about plastic bags

hmmm it is becoming an obsession with me now though,

This space intentionally left blank.
We did away with them long ago.
If you read my posts backward there's evidence that Paul is dead.

on again, off again
I have stopped using them and even when I have to be given one (because I don't have a bag with me for example) I recycle it. I go to the super market with a bag made of fabric. This is Greece, we are ages behind, and I am sometimes given weird looks, but I give them weird looks back when they insist. I don't need a bloody bag to carry a single CD, for god's sake!

I hope they follow this example in the local Marks & Spencer, and then everywhere else. It's about time.

I use the plastic bag I have as garbage bags for my small garbage cans. I try and use my Coop bag when I can, but sometimes I can't.

I bought four cloth bags at the grocery store today. They told me that they will soon be charging for plastic bags, which makes me very happy.

In Paul's Arms!
One of the major supermarkets that I shop will pay you a nickle back for each bag you bring in. Another store will put your name in a raffle for a $25 gift certificate and a new reusable bag. If you bring in one of their paper bags for reuse, they do the same thing.
