I've notice around here that a lot of people like to talk about changing things. Be it the state of one's nation, state of the world, animal rights, ect. But let me ask this, how many here really and truly take part in what you believe in? Say, if you believe in better housing for those less fouretant, do you join a group to improve public housing? I'm a huge believer and partaker in grassroots movments. I volunteer as a legal adsiver in the inner city, I also had worked at a few support groups for people with nevrous disorders, and always had protested for civil rights for those who had rights taken away. So, you guys seem to talk the talk, but do you walk the walk? |

I don't do a dam thing. but, sit on my ass and post. I don't have a life..That right. But, I do call the walfare and complain they don't give out enough food stamps. Even though, I don't get food stamps. and, I do complain to the cops that they should help the homeless get out of the rain. and, I do complain to Shalter to build more rooms. I complain to my self to get a life.

I have been member of Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement, or in Portuguese Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) since I was 18. I have my member card, I used to work with them as volunteer on weekends. It is the largest social movement in Latin America with an estimated 1.5 million landless members organized in 23 out 27 states. What we want is a land reform. People invade unused lands and stay there until the government gives a position, and in many cases the lands belong to the government. This movement is chaotic, there are good and bad things about it, good and bad people too. What I want it is not what some members want. I want the government to give lands to people who can work and live in the land. Land occupations are rooted in the Brazilian Constitution, which says land that remains unproductive should be used for a “larger social function." We are just fighting for our rights. I dont want a land, but other people need it. I support many ongs, 2 of them are S.O.S Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Forest) and ISA (Instituto Socio Ambiental), I have been volunteer and worked with very poor kids teaching them a second languange, portuguese, teaching them how important is to learn about our culture, to protect it and to protect native Americans and their language etc. When I was Kardecist we used to give food and clothes for poor people who need, all kind of support. I think it is a shame that we vote for our governors and we have to help others because they have no home, no food, no clothes etc. And I still have to pay taxes. I believe in compassion. |

I am currently walking the political walk. I am the Obama precinct captain. I've spent the evening making phone calls to try to get people to come out and caucus on February 5. I've also protested the war in Iraq numerous times. |

Don't belong to any organizations but have campaigned in Presidential elections, normally don't drive on the weekends, recycle constantly, keep the thermostat low (walking around wearing jackets and sweaters) have had the environmental lightbulbs for going on about 10 years now, have protested the war and Bush, that's all I can think of now. |

Activism can take many forms. I am active within my trade union and also use whatever method I can to ensure my voice is heard both in local and national politics as well as contacting and persuing many companies which have indulged in unethical practises. |

I was thinking about this thread today, it has intrigued me a bit, I was kind of annoyed when I first looked at this thread coz I thought oh here we go opportunity to say yeah I do this and I do that to make this world all that greater, aren't I freaking wonderful  I was kind of why do we need to say what we do, I'm sure loads of us do our little bit but do we really need to discuss it (I keep thinking of HM in this context) whether I do things or not is to do with me and nobody else, Some of you guys know what I get up to in my spare time but I have no intention of doing it to make me look like a better person or to make you approve of me more, we could all probably still contribute more than what we do to this world but that is up to the individual and not the group and there is not a need to go on about it (even though I am effectively going on about it sort of

Dani, that is a very well said post and I agree with you. Reason why I made this thread wasn't to make everyone brag about how good they are or how we can make the world greater. The reason was because I was speaking with some friends and was stuck by how they brag that they want to make the world a better place and what causes they believe in, but yet they did hardly anything. And I'm not trying to step on toes here, but sometimes I get the same impression too across the board. Now forgive me for that, but in today's socitey, it's "fashionable" to say you're an activist and I do tend to feel that a lot of people like to go on how they're veggie because everyone else's doing it or fighting for certian causes is just "cool." I'm not saying that everyone in the world or on here is like that. I was just ciurous to how many truly partake in what they believe in and not doing it to say they're doing it so they look good to everyone. You know the reaction people give, "aw, she/he's rasing awerness for the homeless. How sweet." I just see too many people in this world looking for that reaction, it sickens me. Yeah, I may just be a grumpy, crabby law student, but it truly has made me open my eyes to a lot of ass kissing in this world. Hence why all of my life pondering threads like these. |

It has been 'fashionable' for a hell of a long time to appear to be an activist, not just recently I know some who say they want change and want things better but they will only do it to suit them and when it doesnt they give up, I justn hope that as a world if at least everybody does that extra little bit no matter how small it would be much greater than a few people trying to save the world by themselves |

I could do a lot more than I do at the moment. But I want to make sure that any activism is something that will achieve something and not just make the participants feel like they're doing something. For instance - there's a plan to build a massive desalination plant here (some of you might have heard Neil Finn talking about it on SFR31) and there's a lot of opposition to it. I haven't made my mind up on the issue yet but one thing I'm not going to do is stand on the beach with a bunch of ageing hippies all arranged to spell out "NO DESAL." That might be something different to do on a Sunday afternoon but it doesn't achieve a thing. The most important think I do is I VOTE!

It is a shame some people help others just because they want to be cool and fashion. That's so small. It is a shame we vote and we still have to help others to build their home, give them food, teach them their own language, etc because governors are taking care of their interests. I posted my work here to show that is possible to help, and I just volunteer because I have free time. Some people dont have time to help others because they are busy with something else. It doesnt mean they are selfish. We cant give what we dont have. A great message - Matthew 6:3 "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" |

You say you want a revolution Well, you know We all want to change the world You tell me that it's evolution Well, you know We all want to change the world But when you talk about destruction Don't you know that you can count me out Don't you know it's gonna be all right all right, all right You say you got a real solution Well, you know We'd all love to see the plan You ask me for a contribution Well, you know We're doing what we can But when you want money for people with minds that hate All I can tell is brother you have to wait Don't you know it's gonna be all right all right, all right Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah... You say you'll change the constitution Well, you know We all want to change your head You tell me it's the institution Well, you know You better free you mind instead But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow Don't you know it's gonna be all right all right, all right all right, all right, all right all right, all right, all right |
