Well, here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul...
My sons have Wii...they have some sports package that has tennis, bowling, and baseball...they like it. They also have a Zelda game and the new Mario Bros Galaxy. It seems like a lot of fun.

We were on a mission a few months back trying to find the Wii game for the grandkids. As soon as we knew a store had *ONE,* we immediately sent one of the grown kids to pick it up. Cute story, my daughter and husband and 5 y/o grandson went to a store where they heard there was one available. They ask someone about it, and he gets someone else. The lady said they just sold there last Wii game. My grandson was all sad and goes, "Ohhhh" The lady asked, who was the game for?" and grandson said, "Me, but now I'm sad because we can't find them nowhere and Santa Claus doesn't bring Wii games." As he's all pouty, sad. The lady said, "Let me check the back and a few minutes later came out with one. Someone was happy.

They are a lot of fun. We even play at home when the kids are here or we have company or just Bert and I will play bowling or golf. I'm checking out what games to buy for Christmas. It seems the Mario Galaxy is a big hit. I think it scored a 9.5 out of 10.

I don't think you'll be disappointed Irene.

Computers blamed as reading standards slump

By Jonathan Brown, The Independent
Published: 29 November 2007

British children have plummeted in an international league table of reading skills. Middle-class parents have been blamed for failing to encourage a love of books over computer games.

Primary-school children in England fell from third to 15th in the study of 45 countries, recording the third highest drop behind Romania and Morocco over the past five years. Scotland fell 12 places compared to 2001, slumping to 26th.

Russia topped the league table, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore while South Africa came bottom.

The findings are a severe embarrassment for the Government, which has poured hundreds of millions of pounds into reading and literacy after coming to power 10 years ago under the slogan "education, education, education".

But the Education Secretary, Ed Balls, said the problem lay beyond the classroom and called on parents to tip the balance back in favour of reading at home, blaming the decline on the growth in electronic entertainment. "It's outside school and in children's attitudes where we have seen more changes since 2001. Today's 10-year-olds have more choice than in 2001 about how they spend their free time.

"Most of them have their own TVs and mobiles, and 37 per cent are playing computer games for three hours or more a day – more than in most countries in the study," he said.

Mr Balls was immediately criticised by the Tories for seeking to evade responsibility for falling standards. Only 27 per cent of pupils in England surveyed said they were given reading homework at least three times a week compared to the international average of 55 per cent.

His Tory shadow, Michael Gove, said: "It's time the Government stopped blaming parents and accepted the case we've been making for a new focus on teaching reading using tried and tested methods, with a test after two years in primary school to ensure our children are being taught properly."

A review published this month of the effectiveness of the Government's £500m literacy programme found reading skills had barely improved since the 1950s.

The latest results, produced by researchers in the United States for the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (Pirls), found that while girls' reading abilities continued to outstrip boys across the world, their performance was falling faster than with their male class-mates.

But it was clear that the decline in the score in England was driven by falling attainment among more able readers, typically associated with those living in more affluent homes, although weaker readers were also going backwards.

The study found: "Attitudes to reading of 10-year-old children in England are poor compared to those of children in many other countries, and have declined slightly since 2001. Children in England reported less frequent reading for pleasure outside school than children in many other countries: just a third of children reported reading for fun on a daily basis."

The rise in screen-based entertainment coincided with a decline in the proportion of English children being read novels or books outside school.

England and Scotland, however, were not alone in recording a dramatic slide in fortunes. Sweden and the Netherlands, first and second respectively in the 2001 findings, also fell sharply though not as far as the two home nations surveyed. Wales and Northern Ireland were not covered by the research.

---

I read that the U.S. was only just slightly better than England in these findings. Personally, I'm for everything (well, perhaps not everything) in moderation, but I think that the youngest generation's love of video games could certainly be having an impact on literacy levels.

At the risk of hijacking a harmless Wii thread with a serious topic, what does everyone else think about this? ^_^ ;)
...and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I tend to agree with you ANdy. I think the impact might actually be on more than just literacy. But who is to blame? The kids or the parents? They said the same thing about TV. Like you said, and my motto is, moderation is king. It would be nice to see the designers slip some educational elements into these games. I like the Wii because it at least gets the kids off the couch and actually makes them move. The guy at the store said it can really be a work out so there is some up side.

Judy, that's a great story. Random act of kindness, I love it.

Hint for anyone looking. The guy at Target told me if it's in the Sunday ad they will have them. Get to the store at opening time and you should get lucky. That's how I got mine and there were 10 other people there with me.

I think Mario Galaxy is a for sure. Great reviews all over the web.

I also heard that the Target in my area was going to have them (about 60)...but the guy told the customers that they should get there at least 2 HOURS before the store opens to get a ticket.

The Wii is very hard to get...and it has been since it has come out. Nintendo hasn't made a lot of them. This is at least the 2nd Christmas season that they are scarce.
I happened to be in my local Best Buy sometime last spring...and they had a handful of them just sitting there....so I bought one for my sons birthday. When I was checking out...the guy told me how 'lucky' I was.

I also would like to say that my kids have had video games their whole life...and they are always reading a book...and have had excellent grades (my youngest has never been off the Deans list...gradepoint never below 3.5) through college.
Like someone said...moderation is key.

Um, video games helped me learn how to read. Some games - Zelda, Mario etc. - require a certain level of reading skills in order to play. As a 6 year old I watched my friend's brother play them all the time, it motivated me to learn to read so I could play too. My brother and I played our fair share of video games in our childhood, and still do. Both of us read all the time, I rarely see my little bro without a book in his hands. Video games aren't to blame, bad parenting is. Obviously gaming should be limited, but a little bit of nintendo can actually motivate kids to read.

As for the question, wii sports is actually really fun, and it comes free with the wii. I'm getting guitar hero for Christmas, which is amazing. And Super Mario galaxy should be a good one too.

((Irene)), My grandson agrees with you. When we were purchasing the Wii games for the grandkids, his Dad was trying to get him to want a Ninetendo 3 (I think) and matthew said, Wii is more fun because you get up and move to play. Smart kid for a 6 yr old.

I feel sorry for the young kids today who don't have parents who put limits on what their allowed to do with their free time. My grandkids all love to read just as their parents do and grandparents. If the parents read to them and the kids see you reading, I think it just comes naturally for kids to want to read. Every Christmas and birthday my kids and grandkids get gift cards for the book store. I usually go with the grandkids and make an afternoon of it in the children's section. It's something they look forward to.

That's my 2 cents worth. :P

I GOT ONE!!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: I heard that Best Buy was going to them so got up early and went there only to be told that all of the tickets were given out at 6 am because the store employees felt bad for the people waiting outside in 30 degree temps. Heard that Circuit City and possibly Toys R Us were, too. Got lost going to Circuit City but found our local Toys R Us and only waited outside in the cold for less than an hour and got it!!! Woohoo!!!!!!
